FINCH, MARGARET M. H.

On Sunday, August 3, 1958, in Fairfax County, Va., MARGARET MADDOX HAMMOND FINCH, retired archivist and genealogist, widow of the late Dr. Erastus Mickel Finch; mother, by her first husband, Dr. Rosser Mead Hammond of Leigh Mead Hammond of 4108 North 35th at., Arlington, Va., and the late William Edward Hammond. Besides her son, she is survived by her sister, Mrs. Ethel Maddox Byrd of Manassas, Va.; grandchildren, Robert Mead Hammond of Tucson, Ariz.; Mrs. Roland E. Curtis of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Martha W. Hammond of the Arlington, Va., address. Friends may call at the S. H. Hines Co. Funeral Home, 2901 14th st. n.w. (parking facilities), where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 6. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Notes:

He was first son of the first Virginia Hamman ancestor. Had 17 children. Lived in Montgomery Co. until 1830. After 1830 returned to Catawba Valley in Botetourt Co. Purchased Poage farm, which fronts Tinker Knob. In 1919 was owned by Rhodes Brothers. Received lands in East St. Louis, IL because of military service in the War of 1812. He served in Norfolk, VA during the spring and summer of 1814. Son, Griffin lived on these lands. John was member of Botetourt county library association. When he died, Dr. J. Hoffman Waugh of Baltimore Conference said John Hamman was the best informed man in Methodist Church in the Old Fincastle circuit.
