    OBITUARY

William Alexander Duke, Jr. arrived at his heavenly home on November 15, 2022. Bill was a devoted husband, loving father, math teacher extraordinaire, volunteer fire fighter, and disability rights consultant/advocate.

He was born in Richmond, VA to Elizabeth Russell Duke and William Alexander Duke, Sr. He was a life-long resident of Caroline County, leaving it to graduate from Virginia Tech. He spent over 20 years with the Caroline County school system, and then became a nationally-recognized authority on the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Bill had a gift for teaching. Using his quirky sense of humor, outlandish puns, corny jokes and shaggy dog stories, he made algebra, geometry, and physics entertaining.

He was a founding member of Upper Caroline Volunteer Fire Department and treasurer for over 30 years. While he liked the excitement of fire fighting, he loved cooking for the chicken barbecues and helping with the pork barbecues for Ladysmith Rescue Squad. It was another outlet for his sense of humor.

Bill was a life-long member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was the third generation to sing in the choir. He was active in a number of ways, but declined to teach Sunday School. His father had held that role until his death, and Bill felt strongly he wasn?t meant to fill his father?s shoes in that role.

Cherishing his memory are his wife, Cheryl, son William Paul, daughter Caitlin, and close cousins Ted Russell, Jean Hahn, Nancy Grand, Beth Hensley, Marti Hurlbert, and Bill Van Name. His parents, Elizabeth and William Duke preceded him in death.

Visitation will take place on November 22, 5-7 PM at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, VA. Funeral Services will be November 23 at 2 PM in the Caroline County Community Center auditorium, Bowling Green. He will be interred at Lakewood Cemetery in Bowling Green.

[Note: This was the only overseas assignment in his military career where he could take his family with him. We were delayed for over 6 months in joining him because of the Taiwan Strait Crisis, a conflict that took place between the People's Republic of China (PRC or Communist China) and the Republic of China (ROC or Taiwan).

The Communists shelled the islands of Matsu and Quemoy in the Taiwan Strait beginning August 23, 1958 in an attempt to seize them from the Republic of China. This was accompanied by an aggressive propaganda assault on the United States, threats against American naval ships, and a declaration of intent to "liberate" Taiwan.

The Eisenhower Administration responded to Taiwan's request for aid by reinforcing US naval units and ordering US naval vessels to help the Kuomintang Nationalist government of Taiwan protect Quemoy's supply lines. 12 203mm long range artillery guns and other 155mm guns were transferred from US Marines to ROC Army and sent to Quemoy to help turn the tide of the artillery duel there. So Dad arrived on Taiwan and was sent immediately into the conflict in his role as a military adviser to the Nationalist Chinese Marine Corps.

Faced with a stalemate, and having run out of artillery shells on the Communist side, the Communist Chinese government announced decreasing bombardment level on October 6. Despite Soviet support of the People's Republic of China's claims to the islands, the bombardment abated, then virtually ceased after President Eisenhower warned that the United States would not retreat "in the face of armed aggression." The unexpectedly forceful American response surprised Chinese and Soviet leaders.

However, both sides continued to bombard each other with shells containing propaganda leaflets on alternate days of the week. This strange arrangement continued until the normalization of ties between the US and Communist China in 1979.

Wikipedia has interesting information on how the residents of Quemoy have utilized the scrap metal from the intense bombardment by the Communist Chinese "The PRC (Communist China) fired around 450,000 shells at the Quemoy islands in the conflict. The shells have become a recyclable resource for steel for the local economy. Since the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, Quemoy has become famous for its production of cleavers made from PRC bomb shells. A blacksmith in Quemoy generally produces 60 cleavers from one bomb shell and tourists often purchase Kinmen knives as souvenirs together with other local products."

    OBITUARY

Richmond Times Dispatch, April 11, 2021

Nancy W. Tate, passed away at age 102 on April 7, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Nancy was born in Tazewell County, Va. to Newton and Ella Pack Whitaker. After graduating from high school, she began her life of travel, first in Welch, W.V., Savannah, Ga. and eventually the world. She met her late husband, Paul Tate, a handsome U.S. Marine, and became a consummate military wife. After his retirement, they settled in Richmond and she began her career as a medical receptionist for Drs. Wyndham and Frank Blanton until her retirement. She enjoyed taking her children and grandchildren on her travel adventures in the U.S., Europe, Aruba, Malta and Mexico.

Nancy was active in Masonic organizations including being the past Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth, Virginia Court Number 1, and the past Worthy High Priestess of the Old Dominion White Shrine Order of Jerusalem. She also served the community by being a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve, and a past member of the James River and the Brandon Woman?s Clubs. She exemplified the motto of her Masonic organizations, ?Let us love one another, for love comes from God.?

Her parents; sisters, Addie Minton and Rosa Shepherd; brother, Roy Whitaker; and husband predeceased her. Nancy?s survivors include daughters, Cheryl Duke (Bill) and Paula Place (Steve); grandchildren, Paul Duke, Caitlin Duke, Anna Matney (Chris) and Deborah Place; nephew, Michael Blanton; and cousins, Joe Whitaker, Frances McGlothlin and Shirley Puckett.

The family wishes to thank Three Pillars Senior Home Care, especially the owner, Kevin Angone, for providing loving care and for adopting Nancy as his grandmother. Capital Caring Hospice was outstanding in their compassionate support of our loved one.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 17, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street, from 2 to 4 p.m. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, in Quantico National Cemetery. A memorial service will take place later in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Nancy?s name to The Opening Door, Inc., 8049 Ormesby Lane, Woodford, Va. 22580.
