Michael Dean Whitaker of Middletown, OH, passed away Thursday June 2, 2011, at Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties, Franklin, OH, at the age of 52 years, 8 months, and 5 days. He was born on September 27, 1958 in Morehead, KY, son of Jimmy Dean Whitaker and the late Amy Lee Hamm.

He is survived by his father and step mother, Jimmy Dean & Betty Whitaker of Richmond, KY; one sister, Toni Lee King of Columbus, OH; two nieces and one nephew, Sarah King, Mason King, and Lilly King.

Graveside service 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the DeBorde Cemetery, Malone, KY.

Was a Civil War veteran. Tape of Gaynell Whitaker Pannel relates he took part in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, suffered a head wound, played dead, and crawled off the battlefield.

James enlisted, along with his father James and younger brother John to fight for the Confederacy. in Co. C of the 34th Virginia Cavalry under Col. W. A. Witcher. He is listed as Whitaker, Jr. J. with the rank of private.

DOB may have been 1844. DOD may have been 20 Sep 1928.
Listed on the 1860 Tazewell Co. Census, Baptist Valley, Western District, p. 194, as James, age 16, had attended school with the census year.
