A soldier in the War of 1812, he is listed as a carpenter of Waterborough. Benjamin served as a private in Captain Densmore's Company in the 33rd Regiment of the United States Infantry.

His son, also called Benjamin, was born two weeks after his death, 11 Sept 1814. His widow, Eunice Warren Russell, and two children lived with her parents, Aaron and Kezia Warren. Aaron applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1818 (No. 10, 433) in which he noted his daughter, Eunice Russell, age 26, whose husband was killed in the late war, granddaughter Rosamond, age 7, and grandson Benjamin, age 5.

Bladensburg, 17 - 29 August 1814. After the surrender of Napoleon the British dispatched Maj. Gen. Robert Ross from France on 27 June 1814 with 4,000 veterans to raid key points on the American coast. Ross landed at the mouth of the Patuxent River in Maryland with Washington as his objective on 19 August and marched as far as Upper Marlboro (22 August) without meeting resistance. Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. William Winder, in command of the Potomac District, had assembled a mixed force of about 5,000 men near Bladensburg, including militia, regulars, and some 400 sailors from Commodore Joshua Barney's gunboat flotilla, which had been destroyed to avoid capture by the British fleet. In spite of a considerable advantage in numbers and position, the Americans were easily routed by Ross' force. British losses were about 249 killed and wounded; the Americans lost about 100 killed and wounded, and 100 captured. British detachments entered the city and burned the Capitol and other public buildings (24-25 August) in what was later announced as retaliation for the American destruction at York.

    LAND RECORDS

JOSEPH Russell, Jr. was the Massabesic (Waterborough, Sanford, Alfred areas of Maine) soldier who enlisted in Captain John Smith's Company which reported to Col. Cutts Aug ye 20th 1778 Maine Historical and Gen.Recorder 8 (1895):84 (Massabesick was the old name for Waterboro and N. Alfred)

In 1791, Joseph and Abigail conveyed additional land in Waterborough to their son "Joseph Russell, Junr York Deeds 56:40.

Deed in York Co. Court House, 30 Apr 1793 Abigail Russell of Sanford, ME sold to Joseph Russell of Waterboro, 1 and 1/2 acres of land for 6 pounds.

1816: Nine acres of land in Waterboro by the Shapleigh line conveyed to Joseph Russell by Timothy Pike (York County Deedbook 94:186)

An 1872 map of Alfred shows that the Russell property was located on the narrow northern strip of Alfred that lay between Waterboro and Shapleigh. Lots 31 and 32 were adjacent to the northernmost tip of what would become the town of Alfred and what is now called Alfred Gore. Alfred was a part of the town of Sanford, Maine, until 1794, when it became a separate town. The shape of Alfred was then pointed at the north and even called a "triangle" in early deeds. We know that the Russells owned land in Massabesick "by the highway and land of John Bean," as this land was described in Joseph, Sr. and Abigail's deed to their daughter, Sarah in 1783. (YD, 50:224).

By 4 January 1845, Joshua Russell, a son of Joseph, Jr. and grandson of Joseph, Sr. and Abigail Russell, gathered signatures to a petition to annex his land to the town of Alfred. Basically the petitioners described the difficulties of being citizens of Waterboro, given their location and the lack of roads to the center of Waterboro. The petition requested a new boundary, using part of the middle branch of the Mousam River to separate the towns. The petition was also signed by Mary Russell, the widow of Joshua's brother, David, and four others. It was unsuccessful until the following year the petitioners returned with 47 signatures and in 1847, the new boundary line was established and the Russell homesteads became a part of Alfred. (Research by Edward Cook of Shapleigh and his brother John of Alfred who now in 2004 lives in the original home of Joseph and Abigail Towle Russell),

Mary's father, Joseph Russell would have been turning 45 in 1755 and Aphia, 43. Mary had already married in 1794 and was in the James Bean household in Alfred. It appears possible that by 1810 the elder Joseph had moved to Alfred too and the Joseph Russell in 1810 Waterboro was Mary's brother, since there is no mark for a female over 45 in the Joseph Russell household of 1810.
