Chess and his family lived in Carswell Hollow, outside of Kimball, WVA. Chess worked in the mines. Joye Boardman's grandmother, Floy Callahan Henderson, who was a cousin to both Chess and Lula helped take care of the two boys.
Newspaper Obituary for Chess F. Woodward of near Saltville, died Thursday night at home following a lingering illness. He was a prominent farmer of Washington Co.VA and a member of the Methodist Church. Survived by wife, Lucy and children, 1 brother, Rev. George W. Woodward, Plasterco and one sister, Mrs. M. A. McCray, Meadowview, VA. Services were held Sunday, Oct 17, 1946, with the Rev. Roy Poston officiating.
