DEATH

WILLIAM ALTIZER

WILLIAM RILEY ALTIZER, 88 years of age, a retired farmer and coal miner, died last Thursday at his the home of his son, G. H. ALTIZER, at North Tazewell.

He was the son of the late THOMAS and SALLY BEAVERS ATIZER, of Tazewell county. His wife and five children preceded him in death.

He is survived by the following sons and daughters: G. H. of North Tazewell; TOM and L. J. , of Bishop,; S. W. , of Keene Mountain; CHARLES, of Denver, Col.; MRS. E. G. MC CANN, of Baptist Valley, and MRS. C. H. OSBORNE, of
Bluefield, Va. There also survives one sister, MRS SUSIE CROUSE , of Bandy; four half sisters; three half brothers and sixty grandchildren and fifty-five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Advent Church in Adria.

16 Dec 1921 Clinch Valley News
Tom SHORT, a well known citizen of the Whitaker Ridge Community, was shot and killed Saturday afternoon last about 2 o'clock, on "Grassy Spur" by Bliss ALTIZER, who is also well known in that community. The shooting, according to information reaching this office, was the result of a poker game, in which the men had been engaged prior to the shooting. At the conclusion of the game the men separated, going in opposite directions, when without warning, SHORT shot ALTIZER with a pistol, the bullet penetrating his body. ALTIZER immediately turned and emptied a load load of bird shot into SHORT'S body, inflicting a wound from which he died a short time afterwards. ALTIZER was given a preliminary hearing, Magistrate HEAVERS, presiding, and released on a $1,000 bond for appearance here in court. From the information we have received it appears the shooting of SHORT was justifiable. SHORT is survived by a wife and one child, and was about 25 years old. He served five years in the US Army.

He kept bees. Sold honey. Buried his money in jars around the yard. Nancy Whitaker Tate would go with him when he would go get his jar of money.

He would sit on front porch with a fan and visit with folks that came up the road. He kept a gallon jar of his "medicine" of rock candy and whiskey. He would take a sip when for medicinal purposes.

He would bake potatoes in the fireplace ashes and pop popcorn in the fireplace. This was a real treat for the grandchildren.

At Christmas, Nancy Whitaker Tate, his granddaughter, would wake up around 4 AM and go up to house. It was a game to see who was going to wake up first. He was always up when NWT got there. His nickname for her was "Shikepoke."

She spent most of her time with them as a child that she had her own bedroom with a feather mattress.

He would ride his horse and Nancy Whitaker Tate would ride double with him, hanging on the back. She was sent to get the horse, because it would run away if someone else rather than NWT came to get him. He was a brown sorrel horse named Doc. Scared of cars, and he would run away. Nancy Whitaker Tate would ride with no saddle or bridle. If a car came, he would stop and not run if she was on him. Nancy Whitaker Tate was a not yet in school. She would take him to a fence, and he would stand still until she would climb the fence and get on him, Then off the would go. He was used for riding to the mill and the store.
