John was born near McMinnville, Warren County TN, later Grundy County, son of James and Ruth Tate. His name and date of birth was recorded in "That Book" (Family Bible). He and his first wife, Permilia were Methodist. After Permilia died, he married Malinda Baldin.

Tate, 5000 acres by entry dated May 15, 1837, No 4439 on the waters of Collins River, NE corner of a 5000 acre survey in the aname of Elan Tate, crossing Hills Turnpike Road on the waters of Bush Creek, waters of Woodcock's Creek, NE corner of Jahaziel Tate's 5000 acres, SE corner of Elan Tate's 5000 acre survey, platting out 62 1/2 acres of older title. Robert and James Tate, CC. The above transferred to J. B. McComack. Isaac Hill, DS. July 3, 1837. Sent on July 4, 1837 by mail.
