He was a Corporal in Company H. of the 35th Infantry in the confederate Army and served during the Civil War. He was wounded in the wrist and side during the battle of Shiloh. At the time of his second marriage he was rather an old man, and it was said that the only reason the young lady married him was that he was getting a pension and she wanted the money. After a while, Hattie S. Tate, his daughter and my grandmother brought him home to her own house and cared for him until his death in 1908.

Son of Major James and Ruth Davidson Tate. His family emigrated shortly to Smith County, TN, but it became Warren County, TN in 1807 where he grew up. His family settled near Collins River, McMinnville, TN. He married Sally. Her parents were born in VA. References: Family data, Federal Census 1850 Grundy County, TN, pages 686-92; 1860 pages 435-172. Dennis Tate records; James Striegel Tate records; Buddy Duke stated that they moved to Livingston County, KY in 1880 with Vance Lockhart's family. Bible owned by Maggie Savage of Palmer, TN in 1972.

Knight's, it being the NE corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of Elan Tate, also the beginning corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of John G. Tate, crossing Hills Turnpike Road, waters of Brush Creek, crossing Hills Turnpike, including and platting out 62 1/2 acres of older title. James Tate and John Tate, CC. The above survey was transferred to Stephen Haight. Isaac Hill, DS, June 21, 1837. Sent on June 27, 1837 by W. Sims.
