Obituary for Jesse Christian

Graveside services for Jesse Christian, 86 year old former Tarkio resident who has been in St. Joseph the past 15 years were conducted here at Home Cemetary on Monday afternoon. He died Saturday in a St. Joseph nursing home.

The officiating minister was the Rev. Robert Stahmer, United Presbyterian Church, pastor.

Born near Tarkio, Mr. Christian was the son of James Christian and Mary Ann Tate Christian, youngest in a family of five children. His date of birth was 4 July 1872.

He engaged in farming and later moved to Minnesota where he was a partner in a hardware business with a nephew. He never married.

In addition to his parents, there brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. There are no immediate survivors. Will Tate, of Tarkio, is a cousin of Mr. Christian.

Obituary of James C. H. Christian.

James C. H. Christian was born at Newport, Tennesee, March 30, 1833; died at his home near Tarkio, Missouri, March 17, 1900. He came to this county in 1852 and lived here for forty-eight years. In 1857, he was married to Miss Mary Tate. Six children were born to them, four sons and two daughters. The sons are all still living and are well known to Tarkio people. One daughter, Sophia, departed this life Dec 2, 1891. The other daughter, Maggie, with her mother, still lives to mourn his loss.

Mr. Christian had never formally united with any church but he loved God as his father and distinctly confessed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior. He was a kind and loving father and was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him as a neighbor or friend. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of relatives and friends, and in the community generally, as a man in whom all who knew him had the fullest confidence.

The funeral service was held at the family residence, conducted by Rev. Duncan Brown, assisted by Rev. Pearson and Dr. J. A. Thompson. A very large congregation of friends and neighbors were present and a long line of carriages followed the body to its last resting place in the beautiful Tarkio Home Cemetary.

The passing of such men as J. C. H. Christian thins the ranks of a class of men of sterling character who formed the rank and file of the pioneers of Atchison County, few of whom remain, but they have left their impression for good upon the rising generation. Their early lives were filled with the cares, toils and hardships of frontier life, but they were helpful, honest, law-abiding, and true to their conviction of right, and withall their lines were cast in pleasant places.

Their memory will be cherished by all who knew them. May their good qualities of heart and mind be emulated.

J. C. H. Christian, farmer, section 34, a native of Newport Courthouse, Cocke County, Tennessee, was born March 30, 1838, being a son of T. E. and Mary A. (Doughty) Christian, who were natives of the same county. The father was born in 1801, and the mother in 1804. After their marriage they settled in that county, remaining there til March 1852, when by wagon they moved to Atchison County, Missouri and located some seven miles south of Rock Port. There they continued to reside until death. The subject of this sketch spent his boyhood days in Tennessee, and with his parents came to Missouri, and since then has devoted his time to farming. He was married February 5, 1857 to Miss. Mary A. Tate, a native of Wayne County, Kentucky, born in 1842. Her parents were Samuel B. and Minerva (Sloane) Tate, who were natives of Cocke County, Tennessee. They moved to Atchison County, Missouri, in 1851, where Mr. Tate was county judge for one term. After their marriage, Mr. Christian and wife settled on a farm in the Missouri bottoms and remained until 1864, when they moved to where they now reside. Their family consisted of six children: Columbus A., C. F., Maggie M., Thomas J. T., S. L., and Jessie.

James married Mary Ann TATE. Mary (daughter of Samuel Bracken TATE, Jr. and Minverva Jane Sloan) was born 13 Jan 1838, Wayne Co. KY; died 25 May 1921, Tarkio, Atchison Co. MO; was buried , Tarkio Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Atchison Co. MO. [Group Sheet]

Obituary for Mary Ann Tate Christian.

Mrs. Mary A. Christian died at her home, Wednesday morning, May 25, 1921, after several weeks illness. Mary Ann Tate was born near Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, January 13, 1828, and came to Missouri with her parents when 11 years of age. They settled on the homestead northwest of Tarkio in 1851 and this was her home for 70 years.

On February 5th, 1857, she was united in holy wedlock with James C. H. Christian, who was laid away twenty-one years ago. Mrs. Christian was well known throughout the community as a kind and hospitable neighbor; and many will feel her loss keenly. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Tarkio.

The deseased leaves five children, Columbus A. of Kansas City, Cread F. of Newman's Grove, Nebraska, Margaret M. and Thomas T. of Tarkio, and Jesse E. of Pine River, Minn., fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-seven great grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, C. L. Tate of Hulett, Wyoming and one sister, Margaret T. Davenport of Tarkio. All of Mrs. Christian's children except for Cread F. of Newman's Grove, Nebr., were present at the funeral. He was unable to come because of sickness in the family.

The funeral services were held at the home and interment took place in the Tarkio Cemetary. The services were conducted by Rev. Halsey of the Presbyterian Church.

Samuel Bracken Tate was born November 11, 1775 on Big Moccasin Creek near Lebanon, Russell County, Va, son of Col. John and Mary Bracken Tate. It is recited that he was born in Fincastle, Botetourt County, VA. He served in the was of 1812, joined August 23, 1813, and was discharged November 4. 1813. He died on May 21, 1845 near Tateville, Somerset, Pulaski County, KY where they settled in 1806. He married on August 14, 1798, Jane Owens, the daughter of William and Nancy Owens, cousins.

He was a witness to the will of William Tate, who died in Russell County, VA, in 1803. William is thought to be his uncle. In 1810, Pulaski County, KY Samuel Tate had a family of four sons under ten years of age and several girls. He was a witness to the will of his son, Reverend John Tate in 1841 and executor of his brother Robert Tate's will in 1844. His own estate record has not been found.
