I Stephen Reaves being this day in my proper mind and judgement do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in which I constitute and appoint my wife, Sarah Reaves my Exectrix and Leonard P. Bridlow and John Pratt, Sen, my executors to this my last will and testament. I will that my estate both real and personal be disposed of in the following manner (namely)

Item: First after paying my just debts, I give and bequeath unto my wife Sarah Reaves all my estate both real and personall during her widowhood or lifetime exclusive of the sum of twenty-five dollars (25) to be given to each of my children as they may arrive to the age of Twenty-one years or marriage except my son Henry Reaves, Ashur Reaves, and my daughter Nancy Huckuby, Lydia Mackinvale, and Sarah Moore to whom I have already given the sum of Twenty-five dollars each which estate both real and personall to be kept in the hands of my wife Sarah Reaves during her widow hood or lifetime for the support of herself and the maintaining my children Stephen Reaves, Samuel J. Reaves, Harrel F. Reaves, and Abner L. Reaves.

Item: Second after the death or marriage of my wife Sarah Reaves, I give and bequeath unto my sons William Reaves, Stephen Reaves, and Samuel J. Reaves my lot of land known by (no 239). Two hundred and thirty-nine in the Fifteenth District of originally Muscogee now Talbot County to be
divided in the following (manner) my sons: William Reaves to have seventy-five acres (75) of the west side of said lot the line to run north and south. My son Stephen Reaves to have (75) Seventy-five acres adjoining my son William. The line to run the same direction the balance which is
fifty-two and a half acres being East side of said Lot I give to my son Samuel J. Reaves. Third: I will that my lot of Land known by (no 240) Two hundred and forty in the fifteenth district of original Muscogee now Talbot County be divided into two equal parts by a line running east and west and the West half of said lot I give and bequeath unto my son Harrel F. Reaves and the East half of said lot I give and bequeath to my son Abner L. Reaves.

Fourth: I will that my negros be disposed of in the following manner to wit Toney, Esther, and her child to be equally divided among my children (viz) Henry, Nancy, Asher, Lydia, William, Betsey, Stephen, Sarah, Samuel J., Harrel F., and Abner L. Reaves.

Fifth: After the death or marriage of my wife Sarah Reaves, I will that the balance of my estate be sold by the executors of this my last will and testament and be Equally divided among my Children. In witness whereof I have here unto set my (my is repeated) hand and seal this 26 day of October 1830.

Reeves of the one part & James Huckaby of the other both of the state & County aforesaid.

Witnesseth that the said Stephen Reeves for & in consideration of the sum of Six hundred dollars to him in hand paid at & before the signing Sealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
hath granted bargained sold & conveyed & by these presents do grant bargain sell & convey unto the said James Huckaby all that tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the county of Baldwin when surveyed now Jones County Containing two hundred & fifty three acres more or less known & distinguished by lot No. Seventy eight in the sixth district of said Baldwin now Jones County & also North west fourth part of lot no fifty three in said district & County bounded as follows beginning at center on the line between the said lots fifty three to a sasafras stake thence with the Original line the corner between 18 [should be 78] & 53 thence on the line between the said lots to the beginning Corner. To have and to hold said bargained premises with all & singular the rights members & appertenances of or in anywise belonging to the said premises to the said James Huckaby his heirs & assigns to their own proper use benefit & behoof in fee simple and the said Stephen Reeves Against himself his heirs & assigns the said the said bargained premises & all every other person or persons whatever will warrant & defend the right & title to said premises.

In 1769 William REAVES and an unknown Timothy REAVES paid the County Poll tax in Dobbs County North Carolina. They were also on the voters list in Dobbs County in 1779. His land records indicate holdings in Dobbs County, Greene County, and Wayne County.

I William Reaves Planter of the County of Wayne and State of North Carolina, Being in Health of Body, and of Sound and perfect Mind and Memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same. But calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die do Constitute, make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the Following manner and form, Viz./ Principally and first of all I bequeath and recommend my Soul unto the hands of God that gave it, and my Body I Recommend to the Earth to be decently Buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named - and as touching such worldly Estate as it hath pleased Got to bless me with in this life, I do give and dispose of the same in manner and form as Followeth . . .

Imprimis /First my Will and disire is that all my Just debts and Funeral Charges be ______ed and paid . . . .

Item) I lend to my Beloved Wife Elizabeth Reaves during her natural life the land and plantation whereon I now life and also for her to have the care of the land which I give to my two youngest sons Lovit, and Lee 'till they come of Age or Marry, also I lend unto my said wife Elizabeth all my stock of every kind household Goods & Plantation Tools, except their might be more than would be necessary for her support - and the raising my younger Children or than can be will taken care of [well taken care of?] on the plantation in which case my desire is that the said Surplus if any be made money of to be put to Interest ----------___ ___ __ disposed as shall be hereafter mentioned which I submit to the discretion of my Executors. . . .

Item) I give and bequeath to my son Stephen Reaves one Hundred and Seventy Acres of land more or less Joining my Son William's land and lying between that and the ______ Branch being part of the same tract of William's land and held by patent granted to me in Governor Caswell's time. to him and his Heirs for ever.

Item) I give and bequeath to my son Lovett Reaves one Hundred and fifty Acres of land more or less lying on Brook's Swamp Beginning at the mouth of Maple Branch and coming up the said Branch with my son John Reaves' line and lying between his line and first Branch above being part of it old patent land I bought of Andrew Bass and the rest containing about seventy-five Acres of New patent land joining it, to him and his Heirs and Assigns forever . . .

Item) I give and bequeath to my son Lee Reaves one Hundred and fifty Acres of Land lying between Stephen and Lovett, being part of the plantation I live on and including the houses after his mothers decease and not for her to be interupted by any construction laid on any former Clause in this Will To him and his heirs forever.

Item) I also lend to my wife Elizabeth Reaves my Three Negros Mingo, Mirth (?) and _____ daughter Hannah during her natural life and after her decease they and Their Increase and all the rest of my personal Estate by sold and Money rising from such sale with any that may be raised in in consquence(sic) of a former Clause be disposed as follows . . .

And in order to set all my children as near on a footing as I can, I desire to state an account of what I have given to each one that has left me and for that to stand as part or all the portion as the case may be in the division . . .

My son Adam Reaves I allow I have Given to the to the (sic) amount of Eighty pounds -- And my son John Reaves In the amount of Eighty five pounds -- And my son Jesse Reaves to the amount of Ninety Pounds

FATHER'S WILL

WILL OF HENRY CARRAWAY:As recorded in Wayne County, NC Wills, Book A-7, 1776-1805, p.14.

In the name of God Amen. I Henry Carraway of the State of North Carolina and county of Wayne being very sick and weak in body but of a sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for it, but calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for ALL men once to die do constitute, make and Ordain this my last will and Testament in the following manner VIS:

Principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it me, and my body I recommend to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors, hereafter named nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Might Power of God, and Touching such Wordly Estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I do give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

First my will and desire is, that all my just debts and funeral charges be cleared and discharged.

Item - I (Leave) to my beloved wife Elizabeth Carraway the use of all my plantation lands and tenements and like wise the use of all my estate both real and personal during her life or widowhood--and after her death or widowhood I desire that the Negro wench named Doll and all her increase, since she has been in my possession I leave to so(?) and the money arising there from to be equally divided amongst my eight children Vis: Zilpha, Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, Civil, Molly, Eve and Adam.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son John Carraway after his mother's death or widowhood, the plantation whereon I now dwell with all the land belonging thereunto on the east side of Carraway's Creek to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Adam Carraway all of my lands and tenements on the west side of Carraway Creek and one negro boy named Ned to his and his heirs forever...and in case the said Adam Carraway should died before he arrives at the full age of 21 years then my will and desire is that the said land and negro may be sold and the money arising there from to be equally divided amongst the rest of my children.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Eve Carraway one negro boy named Sam to her and her heirs forever..and in case she the said Eve should died before she marrys or arrives at the age of 18 years...then my will and desire is that the said negro shall be sold and the money arising there from be equally divided amongst the rest of my children...and all the rest of my estate that I have not yet bequeathed (after?) my wife's death or widowhood I leave to be equally divided amonst four of my children vis: Sevil, Molly, Eve, and Adam.

Item - I do appoint my loving wife executrix and my friends Doc and Richard McKinne Executors to this my last will and testament. And I do hereby utter revoke Disannul and make void all and every other former will or wills heretofore by me made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of Feb anmo domini: One thousand seven hundred and eighty four (1784).

89781. Flowers, William

William Flowers, Jesse Flowers, and their elder brother, John Flowers, served in the militia during the Revolution. In April, 1781 Lord Cornwallis and his huge army came out of their winter quarters in Wilmington and marched north toward Virginia. they traveled along old roadways through New Hanover and Duplin counties.

On May 3, 1781, they crossed the Goshen Swamp at Holley's Mill (later Flowery Dale Plantation) and entered Wayne County. William Flowers, Jesse Flowers, and their elder brother, John Flowers, served in the militia during the Revolution. In April, 1781 Lord Cornwallis and his huge army came out of their winter quarters in Wilmington and marched north toward Virginia. they traveled along old roadways through New Hanover and Duplin counties.

On May 3, 1781, they crossed the Goshen Swamp at Holley's Mill (later Flowery Dale Plantation) and entered Wayne County. In the name of God Amen. I Henry Carraway of the State of North Carolina and county of Wayne being very sick and weak in body but of a sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for it, but calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for ALL men once to die do constitute, make and Ordain this my last will and Testament in the following manner VIS:

Principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it me, and my body I recommend to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors, hereafter named nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Might Power of God, and Touching such Wordly Estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I do give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

First my will and desire is, that all my just debts and funeral charges be cleared and discharged.

Item - I (Leave) to my beloved wife Elizabeth Carraway the use of all my plantation lands and tenements and like wise the use of all my estate both real and personal during her life or widowhood--and after her death or widowhood I desire that the Negro wench named Doll and all her increase, since she has been in my possession I leave to so(?) and the money arising there from to be equally divided amongst my eight children Vis: Zilpha, Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, Civil, Molly, Eve and Adam.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son John Carraway after his mother's death or widowhood, the plantation whereon I now dwell with all the land belonging thereunto on the east side of Carraway's Creek to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my son Adam Carraway all of my lands and tenements on the west side of Carraway Creek and one negro boy named Ned to his and his heirs forever...and in case the said Adam Carraway should died before he arrives at the full age of 21 years then my will and desire is that the said land and negro may be sold and the money arising there from to be equally divided amongst the rest of my children.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Eve Carraway one negro boy named Sam to her and her heirs forever..and in case she the said Eve should died before she marrys or arrives at the age of 18 years...then my will and desire is that the said negro shall be sold and the money arising there from be equally divided amongst the rest of my children...and all the rest of my estate that I have not yet bequeathed (after?) my wife's death or widowhood I leave to be equally divided amonst four of my children vis: Sevil, Molly, Eve, and Adam.

Item - I do appoint my loving wife executrix and my friends Doc and Richard McKinne Executors to this my last will and testament. And I do hereby utter revoke Disannul and make void all and every other former will or wills heretofore by me made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of Feb anmo domini: One thousand seven hundred and eighty four (1784).

Simon moved from Virginia to Edgecombe County, NC in 1745 with other family members and then to Craven County where he patented 100 acres of land on the waters of Nahunta Swamp, a tributary of Neuse River. This area became Johnston, then Dobbs and in 1779, Wayne County. He purchased in 1769 150 acres on Bear Creek and in 1770 he received another 100 acres on Bear Creek. In 1771 Simon was granted land on Thunder Swamp in lower Wayne Co, (then Dobbs) and he moved there. He kept his land in the northern parts of Dobbs County. He eventually owned over 500 acres of land on Thunder Swamp and 350 acres in the upper part of the county. He deeded much of it to his sons, to give them a start in life. With almost a 1,000 acres in his estate, Simon Flowers was one of the largest early planters in what became Wayne County.

He married Sarah, his first wife. After Sarah's death he married Edith Powell of Duplin, NC and they had one son, Dickson Flowers, who later settled in Marion, SC
