On August 8, 1850 the Federal census shows Sarah Arnold Castellaw is in Henry County, Georgia with her children Jane,Andrew Jackson, Francis and Caroline. James is not listed on the census record taken on that day.

By 1850, the family was living in Lavaca Co., Texas. Indenture dated June 11, 1850, indicates James bought 256 acres of land on Rocky Creek, Lavaca County, Texas. In the 1860 census, the family was living in Hallettsville, pg 349.

Lavaca County courthouse records show that James and Sarah Castellow sold an undivided 1/4 of their Lavaca County homestead to their son, William H. Castellow on September 7, 1853. Later that same year they gave the remaining 3/4 of the homestead to sons James B. Castellow, Andrew Jackson Castellow and Francis M.Castellow. On January 20, 1854 they gave their personal property of "horses, cattle, hogs, household goods, etc. to Andrew Jackson, Francis M., Martha Jane "Dolly" and Rachel Caroline Castellow. It appears that James and Sarah were getting their estate in order for something, perhaps his pension for the War of 1812, although Sarah lived almost 13 mores years(1867) and James lived for almost 25 mores years (1878).

In 1870, according to the Lavaca County census James was living alone, page 485.
