  1. 1.  Maitland ALEXANDER was born 08 Apr 1867, New York City (son of Henry Martin ALEXANDER and Susan Mary Brown); died 03 Jan 1940, Sewickley, Allegheny Co. PA.

    Notes:

    Graduate of Princeton University, 1889. Went to Princeton Theological Seminary and 14 April 1892 was ordained as a Presbyterian minister.

    He served briefly in churches in Long Branch, New Jersey, and Harlem, New York City; and later became known as a prominent Presbyterian pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, where he served for thirty years. In 1914 he was Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. In 1918 he was given a year?s leave by his church to serve as Director of Religious Work for the American occupation army in Coblenz, Germany.

    At the age of ten Archibald was sent to the academy of William Graham at Timber Ridge meetinghouse (since developed into Washington and Lee University), at Lexington. Graham was a Presbyterian minister who had been trained in theology by John Witherspoon.

    By the time he was 21 Alexander was a preacher of the Presbyterian Church. He was appointed the president of Hampden-Sydney College[2] and from there was called to the Third Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. The Princeton Theological Seminary was established at Princeton, New Jersey in 1812 and Alexander was appointed its first professor, inaugurated on August 12, 1812 and served until 1840.

    "Order executors to sell when necessity may require or when they may think most for the advantage of my heirs all the lands I own on the South River and Irish creek wither by Patent Conveyance or location Also what land I have remaining of what I purchased of Robert Lusk lying on the Northriver adjoining Andrew Reids land; also tht part of the lot with my brick house which I have not before given away also whatever lands I am entitled to lying on the North branch of licking in the state of Kentucky (excepting what I shall give to my brother Archibald, sister Jean and brother Samuels Child) "

    Executors given the same power and authority as vI now have myself " to make sufficient conveyances in the Fee Simple purchases of the aforesaid lot and lands and for any other lands I could be compelled in law to convey........In case both exeutors should die before this part of will is executed " I hereby give their executors or administrators like power and authority.     William Alexander deceased last will and testament was produced in court by Andrew Alexander and Samuel L. Campbell, Executors. Proved by the oath of Cornelius Dorman John Newcomer & Timothy Dunavan subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded. On motion of Executors certificate granted for obtaining probate. John Wilson and And Andrew Moore their securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the sum of Twenty Thousand Dollars Conditioned According to Law.

    Notes:

    He was an Irish presbyterian minister known for his powerful sermons. He became blind about 1787 due to cataracts, but continued his labors without interruption, writing as well as preaching with great industry, and was known as "the blind preacher.

    James Madison, who had been his pupil, said: "He has spoiled me for all other preaching," and Patrick Henry classed him as one of the two greatest orators he had ever heard.
