  1. 2.  Peter Augustus Jay was born 23 Aug 1877, Newport, RI; died 18 Oct 1933, Washington, DC; was buried , John Jay Cemetery Rye Westchester Co. NY.

    Notes:

Diplomat. The great-great-grandson of John Jay, Peter A. Jay studied at Eton College in England and graduated from Harvard in 1900. In 1902 he began a career with the US Foreign Service, which included assignments in Paris, Constantinople, Tokyo and Cairo.

Jay served as US Minister to El Salvador from 1920 to 1921. From 1921 to 1925 he was Minister to Romania, where he assisted in negotiating that country's repayment terms for wartime and post World War I development loans. In 1925 he was appointed US Ambassador to Argentina. He was present in May, 1926 when a bomb exploded at the door to the US embassy, an action that might have been a protest of the guilty verdicts in the Sacco and Vanzetti trials.

Jay's health began to fail while he was serving in Buenos Aries, and he resigned his post in 1926, afterwards living in retirement in Washington, DC. In 1928 he was appointed the US member of the Permanent International Commission, an organization created by the 1914 peace treaty between the United States and Spain. Peter A. Jay was the son in law of Civil War officer and prominent attorney John J. McCook. (bio by: Bill McKern)

  1. 6.  John James McCook was born 25 May 1845, Carrollton Carroll Co. OH; died 17 Sep 1911, Sea Bright Monmouth Co. NJ; was buried , Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, NJ.

    Notes:

Folk Figure. One of "the Fighting McCooks", who had 17 members fight for the Union, he was at Kenyon College in 1862 when his attempt to enlist was denied because he was underage. He accompanied the 52nd Ohio Infantry as a volunteer aide, and was later commissioned a Lieutenant on the XXI Corps staff, Army of the Cumberland. Promoted to Captain in 1863, he transferred to the Army of the Potomac, was wounded at Spotsylvania, and received brevet promotions for heroism to Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, at age 19 one of the youngest Civil War soldiers to attain such distinction.

After the war he received bachelor's and master's degrees from Kenyon, graduated from Harvard Law School, and became a New York City attorney. He rose to senior partner at one of the nation's most prominent firms, was a Director of banks and railroads, and a Kenyon College and Princeton Theological Seminary Trustee. In 1892 he funded a new stadium at the University of Kansas.

When his friend William McKinley became President, McCook declined appointment as Attorney General or Interior Secretary. In 1897 he led a syndicate that nearly annexed Cuba by paying its debt to Spain, an action that might have averted the Spanish-American War.

Active in the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), during that war he was Chairman of the Army and Navy Christian Commission. The village of McCook, Illinois, and McCook Street at the University of Kansas are named for him. (bio by: Bill McKern)
