    OBITUARY

    Highland Recorder, Monterey, VA; 18 January 1962,

    Jennings Judy Swecker, 65, a prominent churchman, farmer and retired agent of the Internal Revenue Service, died at his home, Maple Grove Farm, Blue Grass, on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 9:15 p.m. following a lingering illness.

    Mr. Swecker, a son of the late George E. and Estella Judy Swecker, was born at Blue Grass, Dec. 20, 1896.

    After graduating from Blue Grass High School in 1913, he attended and graduated from William and Mary College in 1917. He served one year as assistant principal at Blue Grass High School followed by 18 months service in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After his discharge from service he became a principal in public schools of Covington and Highland and Augusta counties. In 1934, he was employed by the alcoholic tax unit of the Federal government and in 1940 transferred to the Department of Internal Revenue. He retired from service in August of 1960.

    He was a life long and active member of the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church and was a deacon for many years. He was an active member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club, a past member of the Staunton Rotary Club, past member of the Staunton Shrine Club and a thirty-second degree mason, a member of Highland Lodge No. 110, S.F. & A.M., where he was a past Worshipful Master and secretary. He was also a District Deputy Grand Master of District 19 of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.

    The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maria Tate Sterrett Swecker, whom he married May 20, 1924, and by seven children, Mrs. James A. Crown, Harrisonburg; Mrs. Robert W. Abbott, Charlottesville; Miss Mary Judy Swecker, at home; William S. Swecker, Roanoke; George R. Swecker, Blue Grass; Robert L. Swecker, Harrisonburg, and James L. Swecker of Coceysville, Md. He also leaves a brother, Paul L. Swecker, Woodstock; two sisters, Mrs. John R. Slaven and Miss Celia P. Swecker, Richmond; two nieces and two nephews.

    Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday, Jan. 15 at 2:30 p.m. by his rector, the Rev. A. E. Johnson, assisted by the Rev. Philip E. DeMuth. Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery with Highland Lodge No. 110 A.F. & A.M. conducting last rites.

    Active pallbearers were David W. Kiser, Robet D. Swecker, W.C. Rexrode, D. Byron Judy, W. Frank Patterson, B.T. Swecker, Jr., John J. Cordes adn W.P. Parramore.

    Officers of Crabbottom Presbyterian Church, members of the Blue Grass Ruritan Clubs and other friends in the community served as honorary pallbearers.
