Son of Major James and Ruth Davidson Tate. His family emigrated shortly to Smith County, TN, but it became Warren County, TN in 1807 where he grew up. His family settled near Collins River, McMinnville, TN. He married Sally. Her parents were born in VA. References: Family data, Federal Census 1850 Grundy County, TN, pages 686-92; 1860 pages 435-172. Knight's, it being the NE corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of Elan Tate, also the beginning corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of John G. Tate, crossing Hills Turnpike Road, waters of Brush Creek, crossing Hills Turnpike, including and platting out 62 1/2 acres of older title. James Tate and John Tate, CC. The above survey was transferred to Stephen Haight. Isaac Hill, DS, June 21, 1837. Sent on June 27, 1837 by W. Sims.

Born In Big Moccasin, a spur of Clinch Mountain near the Holston River, near Lebanon, Russell County, VA. The son of Major and Ruth Davidson Tate. He married Dorcas Myers who, along with her parents was born in KY. Davidson came to TN with his parents when very young. In 1830 the family appeared with five children, some must have been working for them. They were not in Grundy County in 1840, but were there through 1880. On December 22, 1838, Davidson Tate purchased land, tools and slaves in Dekalb County, AL from Lewis D. Hall.
