C., 30 January 1946 22.COMPANY C 83D CHEMICAL MORTAR BATTALION, is cited for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy from 10 to 27, September 1943, near Chiunzi Pass, Italy. This company landed at Maori, Italy, with the Ranger Force on the night of September 8 and 9, 1943, with the mission of seizing the high ground controlling Chiunzi Pass and of securing the left flank of the Fifth Army. The holding of this position was vital for flank security, for observation on the plains of Naples, and for observation on German supply routes and communication lines to the Salerno battlefront. During this period, Company C exhibited unusual gallantry and determination in manhandling mortars and supplies to mountain tops. The men worked continuously, night and day, keeping the unit supplied. Mortar crews were cut down to one and two men per gun, and the remaining men fought with the Rangers and went on combat patrols. Subjected to almost continuous mortar and artillery fire, and repeatedly attacked by a determined, numerically superior enemy, Company C maintained extremely heavy fire and filled in all gaps in the Ranger line. Company C men fought side by side with the Rangers, using their automatic weapons and grenades with devastating effect. Company C mortar fire was of necessity brought to within 50 yards of friendly units as seven major counterattacks were repelled during the period, and numerous enemy patrols were stopped, often in bitter, close-in fighting. Company C's mortars kept the German Army supply route under continuous effective fire, although the supply route was 2,000 yards beyond the authorized range. The men and oficers of Company C, 83d Chemical Mortar Battalion, displayed extraordinary determination in supplying their mortars, which were at the top of the mountain, with ammunition and spare mortar parts. Despite limited food and water supplies and the continuous nature of enemy fire and activity, this company maintained its courage and determination throughout an extended onslaught by an enemy determined to wipe out its positions and made possible the successful accomplishment of a vital mission. {General Orders 647, Headquarters Seventh Army, Western Military District, 16 November 1945, as approved by the commanding General, United States Army Forces, European Theater {main}. Daily Journal; 14 Feb. 2008 TUPELO - Dexter Daniel Beavers, 85, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law. He was born May 29, 1922, in Raven, Va., to Dexter Boyd Beavers and Stella Maynard Beavers. He volunteered for duty with the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served three years in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. Upon returning, he married and began a preaching career spanning over 55 years in locations from Tennessee to Florida and Virginia to Mississippi, including radio and television evangelism. He preached full-time for churches in Fulton and Houston, Miss., before retiring in 1992 and moving to Tupelo, where he was very active for more than 10 years in the teaching and outreach work of the Gloster Street Church of Christ. During that time he was also a member of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club and a charter member and on the Board of Directors for The Shepherd Center. He came out of retirement in 1999 to serve the Lawson Chapel Church of Christ in Prairie, before finally retiring five years later due to ill health. Throughout his life he was dedicated to helping others, no matter what their situation, in the name of the Lord. His daily motto was simple: "Do it now!" He will always be remembered for his active card ministry, sending birthday and anniversary wishes to many of the people he taught, baptized or married during his active years. At his request, his body has been given for scientific research through Anatomy Gifts Registry. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Gloster Street Church of Christ in Tupelo. Survivors include two children, Dexter Samuel (Laura) of Charlotte, Tenn., and Emile Ann (Richard) Salisbury of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one brother, M.R. "Bob" (Opal) Beavers of Marion, N.C.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah. Hutton Whitaker of Longview will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 6, 2003, in Memory Park Cemetery. Mr. Whitaker died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Semper Care Hospital in Good Shepherd Medical Center. He passed away in the presence of his beloved family, following a lengthy illness. Services will be conducted by the Revs. Paul and Lisa Klaus. Don Whitaker was born in Bristol, Va., on June 24, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lexie Whitaker, and one brother, C.A. Whitaker Jr. He graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn. He attended East Tennessee State University. Mr. Whitaker then served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the Pacific. In 1956, Mr. Whitaker and his family moved to Longview to begin a 35-year career with Texas Eastman Co. Don was also an active member of Woodland Christian Church. Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Weaver Whitaker, and his mother-in-law, Kathryn Johnson. He is also survived by his three children and their families, Dona and Jimmy Adams of Longview, Rick and Pat Whitaker of Henderson and Ken and Edith Whitaker of San Antonio. Mr. Whitaker?s surviving siblings include Gay W. Jankey of Longview, Edith and Bedford May of Virginia Beach, Va., and Shirley and Lloyd Yonce and Carol C. Whitaker, all of Kingsport. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Trey and Toni Adams, Zack Adams, Brian and Dee Whitaker, Christy and Brett Doerr, Stacy Huntley, Brandy Hailey, Christie Love, Wendy Millar and Leah Anne Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Riess, Skylar, Hailey, Chaney, Jordan and Brady. There are numerous others to whom Mr. Whitaker was a most beloved uncle, friend or cousin. (Alsen) Place, 90 Acton Dorothy A. (Alsen) Place, formerly of Arlington and Cummaquid, died May 14, 2013, in Acton at age 90. The daughter of the late Nils and Nellie (Clare) Alsen, Mrs. Place was born and raised in Arlington, and attended Arlington High School where she excelled in academics and loved starring in operettas. After graduating with honors, Mrs. Place attended the Pierce Secretarial School and was employed at B.U. Law and Polaroid until she married in 1946. A tireless volunteer at Symms Hospital, Emerson Hospital, and Cape Cod Hospital, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Arlington and First Congregational Church in Yarmouthport. A lifetime member of the Cummaquid Golf Club, her hobbies included knitting, needlepoint, rug making, basket weaving, and reading. She was a member of Quidnuncs, Quilters, Meetneats. She was the wife of 50 years to the late Kenneth V. Place. Mrs. Place was the mother of Stephen C. Place and his wife Paula of Bristol, CT, and Karl W. Place and his wife Mary of Maynard; grandmother of four; and great-grandmother of two. She was the sister of the late Margaret C. Alsen of St. Petersburg, FL, and the late Edith C.
