He has been a barber 20 years with the G&S Barbershop but most recently had been employed by Hollister Inc. in Stuarts Draft. He served in the Air Force 1947-50. Surviving are his wife, Stella Knicely Sorrels; two daughters, Brenda A. Eppard of Minot, N.D. and Darlene S. Ralston of Harriston; three sons, Thurman E. Sorrels, Jr., Michael V. Sorrels and Mitchell V. Sorrels, all of Harriston; a brother, Andy G. Sorrels, Jr. of Richmond; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Etter Funeral Home in Waynesboro by the Rev. Richard S. Weaver. Burial with military rites by the Stuarts Draft Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9339 will be in Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born in Buchanan Va., July 4, 1928, he was the son of the late Samuel Lee & Stella Richardson Davis. Tivis started working in the coal mines and later on the Virginia railway. From 1953 to 1970 he worked with the Ford Motor Company. He worked as a carpenter & other jobs with the US Navy. His hobbies include fishing and quilting. Tivis quilted as many as 103 quilts in his lifetime. In addition to his wife, Dolores Davis; a step daughter, Marjory Lackwold of Palmer Alaska; two sons, Ira Daniel Davis, Tivis Maynard Davis of Ohio; three sisters, Erma Grizzle of Castlewood, Va., Charlotte Littleton of Newton, Shirley Christoph of Mesa, Arizona; three brothers, Delmar Davis of Bristol, Va., Cecil Davis of Haines City, Florida, James Davis of Mansfield, Ohio; several grand-children, several great grand-children and many nieces and nephews survive him. A brother, Daniel Boone Davis and a daughter, Violet Davis preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Newton. She is survived by two sisters, Martha Ball of Honaker and husband, the late June Ball and Dollie and husband, Eugene Compton of Lebanon; eight brothers, Jacob Wayne and wife, Martha McGlothlin, Dallas Burke and wife, Elizabeth McGlothlin, James Carlis and wife, Lula Belle McGlothlin, Memphis Elwood and wife, Judy McGlothlin, and Hyder King and wife, Sue McGlothlin, all of Honaker, Dauler Rean and wife, Faye McGlothlin and William Hadley, all of Fletcher's Ridge and Jennings Fred and wife, Betty, of Davenport; special sister-in-law, Jerlene McGlothlin; 34 nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews. Services were held Friday in Honaker with Elders Franklin Viers, Bobby Arrington, Jim O'Quinn and Barrett McGlothlin officiating. Interment followed in the McGlothlin Family Cemetery on Fletcher's Ridge. Pallbearers were nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Council and Rowe Senior Citizens. Mrs. Virginia Kestner "Gin" Cannon, age 80, went home to be with the Lord at 2:51 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, at her residence following a brief illness. Born in Abingdon on Aug. 30, 1923, a daughter of the late Walter J. and Lottie Annis Gilmer Kestner, she had resided in this area since 1960, when they moved from Chicago. Gin was a member of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She volunteered at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center for 32 years. Gin was an avid golfer who achieved two hole-in-ones at Ridgefield Country Club. She will be remembered as a loving, caring and giving person with many friends left to miss her. Gin is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert Henry Cannon Jr. in 1996, and by three sisters. Survivors include one son, Robert H. "Bob" Cannon III of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Patricia C. Bond of Kingsport; one sister, Cleo Donald of Abingdon; one grandson, James W. Bond III; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jack Edwards will officiate. He was a member of Concord Church of the Brethren, and served as a deacon, trustee, and member of the finance board and cemetery committee. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Figgers Heslep. He is survived by his second wife, Peggy Jennings Heslep; a son, Wayne Heslep of Lexington; a daughter, Evelyn Heslep of Lexington; two stepsons, Bobby Jennings of Fairfield, and Mike Jennings of Fairfield; five stepgrandchildren and two step-greatgrandchildren.
