Her family stated, "She went to be with the Lord after a long illness." She was born in February 1922 in Virginia, and was a daughter of the late William and Verdie Blair Tipton. She was the widow of Ted Ketron. A former resident of the Kingsport area, she had lived in Fall Branch since 1970. She was a Christian and of the Baptist tradition of faith. After retiring, she was a baby sitter. Her family noted, "She was 'Nanny' and 'Mammaw' to numerous children." Survivors include her son: Robay Johnston Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Piney Flats; a daughter: Brenda J. Huff of Kingsport; seven grandchildren, two of whom she raised: James Richard "Rick" Johnson and his wife, Mechille, and Nikki Fuller and her husband, Jeff; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother: Billy Joe Tipton of Kingsport. She was preceded in death by a daughter: Wanda Johnston Caperton; two brothers: Alfred Ray Tipton Sr. and Robert Lee Tipton; and a sister: Mabel Donihe. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga St., Kingsport. A graveside service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning in Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fall Branch. Nathan Jackson Jr. will officiate. Pallbearers will be her family and friends. Absher, 90, of the Road Ridge Section of Raven, Va., went to meet his Lord, May 31, 2005, surrounded by his family and friends, singing his favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace," following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Charles Allen and Rena Belle Chambers Absher, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Raven area. He was a retired, self-employed logger and excavator and a retired coal miner. He was a member of the Fork Ridge House of Prayer Church in Raven. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Green Absher; one son; Thurman David Absher; three sisters, Mattie Stilwell, Artie Keen and Maxie Williams; four brothers, Dewey, Roy, Lloyd and William Absher. Yorktown, John Douglas "Pete" Sterrett Jr., 87, died at Riverside Convalescent Center Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. He was born in Rockbridge Co., Va., Aug. 22, 1917, to Mary Lackey Sterrett and John Douglas Sterrett . After graduation from Washington and Lee University in 1938, he married Lula McCorkle Moore, also of Rockbridge County. During World War II, Pete served as a research physicist with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Silver Springs, Md., developing the proximity fuse for the U.S. Navy. In 1945, he was sent to Europe as a scientific consultant when the fuse was first introduced for use by Army artillery. As WWII ended in the European Theater, he remained for six weeks working with the Alsos Mission (now CIA) as part of a team to trace similar fuse projects under development in Germany. Following WWII he returned to Lexington where he became manager of the Rockbridge Farmer's Co-op and a part-time farmer. Later, Pete served two terms as the Rockbridge County Treasurer. Beginning as a cashier in the Rockbridge National Bank, he moved on to serve as President of First National Farmer's Bank in Wytheville. There, he became Senior Vice President and Manager when the bank merged with First National Exchange Bank of Roanoke. He was a graduate of Maryland-Virginia Bank Management School at University of Virginia, and American Institute of Banking. In 1972, he became President of Dominion Bank of the Peninsula where he organized offices in Williamsburg, Hampton, and Newport News. He retired as President of the Dominion Bank of Smithfield in 1979. After retiring from banking, he became the first Executive Director of York County Industrial Development. In 1976, in partnership with his son-in-law, Roger Copenhaver and Ronald Wade, he founded the Grafton True Value Hardware Store. Always active in church wherever he lived, Pete served as an Elder in the Timber Ridge, Wytheville, Williamsburg and Yorkminster Presbyterian Churches. He was also heavily involved in community affairs and was associated with many organizations in the communities in which he lived. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Robert Sterrett of Hampton. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lula Moore Sterrett; three children, Rev. John Douglas "Doug" Sterrett III and wife, Rachel, of Warm Springs, Va., Martha Sterrett Schoonmaker and husband, Bill, of Centreville, Va., and Susan Sterrett Copenhaver and husband, Roger, of Yorktown, Va.; seven grandchildren, John B. Keene, 80, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Peter Cleveland and Lou Emma Lowe Keene. He had spent most of his life in the Rowe area. He was a retired coal operator. He was a member of the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church for 50 years, serving as a deacon for 35 years. He was the widower of State Ira Keene. Surviving are three daughters, Shelva Jean Compton of Richlands and Patty Sue Keen and Vada Baldwin, both of Rowe; three sons, Dallas Carl Keene of Morganton, N.C., Joseph Edward Keene of Richlands and Dalma (Dale) Keene of Tazewell; two sisters, Juanita Street of Ashboro, N.C., and Minnie Hess of Burlington, N.C.; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Mr. Keene was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Joan Compton; and a son, Joseph Roy Keene. Among survivors are sons-in-law Sturgle Compton of Richlands and Harlis Keen and Ned Baldwin, both of Rowe; daughters-in-law Donna Keene of Richlands and Kathy Keene of Tazewell; and a special son-in-law, Don Compton.
