Nichols BLUEFIELD ? Irene A. Nichols, 97, of 1109 Heatherwood Road, and previously of 617 Parkway, Bluefield, WV, died Feb. 18, 2012 at The Maples Health Care. She was born Aug. 4, 1914 in Cliffield, Va. and lived in Bluefield since 1930. She was the daughter of George Elbert and Bertie Patton Altizer. She graduated from Beaver High School and was a very active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Bluefield since 1933. She served as Deacon and several terms as Elder; at the time of death, she was an Elder Emeritus. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship of the church, serving as vice president and five two-year terms as president. She was also very active in the WV Region of Christian Churches and C.W.F., serving on the cabinet of Christian Women's Fellowship as vice president for four years and president for four years. She served several terms as a member of the WV Regional Board and was a delegate many times to the General Assembly of the Christian Church of the U.S. and Canada. She was a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, the Pink Dogwood Garden Club and a charter member of the Bluefield Regional Medical Center Volunteer Service, having served more than 20 years. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bluefield Civic League, the Ladies Auxiliary of Bluefield and the Cumberland Heights Lioness Club. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles H. Nichols; an infant son, David Earl Nichols; three brothers, Hoyt A. Altizer, Master Sergeant Charles E. Altizer, and Henry F. Altizer; four sisters, Ruth Whitt, Ella Lambert, Ruby Suiter, and Helen Lockhart. Survivors include two sons, Charles Ronald Nichols of Atlanta, Ga. and Daniel Gordon Nichols of Bluefield; one sister, Jean Strickland and her husband, Bill Strickland of Suffolk, Va.; one sister-in-law, Edith Altizer of Fort Wayne, Ind.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Bluefield with the Reverend Aaron Watkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. A luncheon for friends and family members will be served at the church afterwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Raymond Janutolo; one daughter, Barbara Jones; five brothers, Julian, Dave, Watson, Daniel and Charlie Neel; and one sister, Martha Hendrick. Survivors: son, Carl E. Janutolo of Brushfork-Falls Mills Rd.; daughters, Janie Jones and husband, Richard, of Falls Mills, Louise McVey and husband, Darrell, of Brushfork-Falls Mills Rd.; brother, William (Bill) R. Mrs. Pansy Leona Steele, age 94, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, in a Richlands, Va., hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Canebrake, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late George Vince and Hattie Christian Bandy. Pansy was a lifelong Christian, devoted mother, wife, and grandmother. She was a member of the Bandy Chapel Church, where she served faithfully for 62 years as the church pianist. She was recognized as the church "Mother." Her first love was her love for her God. She was a member of the Red Hat Club and was as avid gardener and had a gift with flowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Steele; two sons, Vinson Steele and William Steele Jr.; seven siblings, Kathleen Beavers, George Vince Bandy Jr., Bobby Bandy, Janice Reid, Medarae Barnett, Herman Bandy, and Delbert Bandy; and one grandchild, Mark Steele. Survivors are four daughters, Shirley Rust and husband, Robert, of Johnson City, Tenn., Peggy Hawthorne and husband, Bill, of Atlanta, Katye Ramey and husband, Jim ,of Bluefield, Va., Bonnie Niemi and husband, Richard, of Draper, Va.; three sons, Buddy Steele and wife, Joan, of Knoxville, Md., Doug Steele of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Jimmy Steele and wife, Judy, of Bristol Virginia; two daughters-in-law, Linda Steele and Mary Steele of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Rosa Bell Altizer of Amonate, Va., and Joanne Copeland of Wetumpka, Ala.; two brothers, Bernard Bandy of Baptist Valley, Va., and Bill Bandy of Pounding Mill, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Todd Steele, LaRhonda Lindsey, Shane Steele, Tamitha Durham, Kim Payne, Teresa Reid, Denise Marchigiani, Crystal Frey, Melissa Muir, Anthony Steele, Latisha Steele, Jeff Farmer, Bridgette Brown, Marty Garrett, and Bryant Garrett; 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
