Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Patrick County on May 8, 1913, and was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Prince Annis Vipperman Hensley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Franklin Handy; two sons, Claude Handy and Clyde "Pete" Handy; two sisters, Laurie Justice and Lottie McBride; a brother, John Hensley; a half-brother, Lawrence "Dude" Hensley; and two grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Beatrice Pack of Stuart, Essie Lawless of Stuart and Bessie Martin of Bassett; two half-sisters, Goldie Young of Meadows of Dan and Ruth Williams of Mount Airy, N.C.; three half-brothers, Harrison Hensley of Claudville and Burton Hensley and William Hensley, both of Mount Airy; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grand children. Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. J.R. Shelton and Bernard Handy officiated. Burial was in the New Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Powers Dies In Hospital Melzah Maderia (Bozo) Powers, 57, of 208 Jennings St. died at noon Thursday in a local hospital following a long illness. He was born at Colcord, May 22, 1912, a son of the late William Morgan and Rose Moore Powers. He formerly was employed as a state coal inspector for 25 years, a coal inspector for Ogelbay-Norton Coal Co. for three years and had worked for Meadows Lumber Co. for the past 11 years.He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and a lifetime resident of Raleigh County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Vipperman Powers, daughter, Mrs. James E. (Kay) Hedrick of Albany, Ga., one son, William Donald of Vermillion, Ohio; one sister Miss Lillian B. Powers of Beckley and six grandchildren. The body is at the Calfee Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Calfree Chapel with Rev. Jim Franklin in charge. Burial will be in the Ridge Lawn addition of the Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today. Pallbearers will be Roman L. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wharton Cole Herndon; a son, Randall Cole Herndon; five brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by a sister, Ruby Hale and her husband, Jimmy, of Pratts, Virginia; a daughter, Karen Faye Davis and her husband, Wayne, of North Garden, Virginia; a son, James M. Herndon and his wife, Juanita, of Fluvanna, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Tana B. Herndon of Charlottesville, Virginia; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Margie was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Garden, Virginia. She will be missed by all. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, August, 29, 2009, at Mooreland Cemetery with the Reverend Ronnie Morris officiating.
