Born April 27, 1919 at Big Creek, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mike Whitaker and Fannie Dillion Whitaker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Silver Star in August of 1945. He served in Luzon, Northern Solomons and also received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company with over forty years of service at Berwind, Newhall #6, and Jenkinjones mines where he retired in 1981. Mr. Whitaker was a member of the UMWA, District 29, Local #7173 for sixty-five years. After retirement, he was active in his community, local and state government affairs. In February 2008, he was awarded co-citizen of the year and being one of the oldest voters in West Virginia, was inducted into West Virginia Hall of Fame by the McDowell County Commission. He was a very loving person who touched many lives. He especially loved sitting on the benches at Wal-Mart and the Claypool Hill Mall. Mr. Whitaker was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Neighborhood Watch. He will be sadly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Annie Dalyai Whitaker; one sister, Callie Patterson; and one brother, Odell Whitaker. Survivors include one son, Ernest Mike Whitaker and wife, Cynthia of Troutman, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Whitaker Lee and husband, Cecil of Tazewell, Va.; five grandchildren, Michael Eric Whitaker and wife, Beth of Conover, N.C., Brian Keith Whitaker and wife, Emily of Lincolnton, N.C., Brandon Scott Whitaker of Troutman, N.C., Myranda Dawn Edmonds of Hillsville, Va., and Chelsey Danielle Edmonds of Tazewell, Va.; four great-grandchildren, William Michael Whitaker, Mason Eugene Whitaker, Samantha Renee' Whitaker, and Natalie Elizabeth Burress; two brothers, Herbert Whitaker and wife, Marie of Columbus, Ga. and Aldmer Whitaker of New Jersey; two sisters, Theresa Bush of Ohio and Helen Brush of Vermont; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Linzie and Iris Beavers and family, Geneva and the late Mike Harman and family, Joe Davis and family and to all the Newhall family. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Newhall Bible Church in Newhall, W.Va. with the Reverend Kenny Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va., where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. Pallbearers will be Cecil M. Lee, Kevin Burress, Randy Brewster, Jason Brewster, Linzie Beavers, and Kenny Mitchell.
