A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, 2 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Pastor Kevin Bauswell officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Thomas was born on March 19, 1918, one of seven children of Carl Hampton and Lena Osborne Yow. He served as a private in the US Army during WW II. He was employed with the Greensboro News-Record from 1936 until 1975 as Foreman of the Composing Room. Thomas was a lifetime member of the printers union, CWA Printing, Publishing and Media Workers. He also was a charter member of Spring Garden Friends Meeting and a lifetime member of the Society of Friends.. Thomas was proud of his military service and his career in publishing. He loved his family, driving road trips, his church, Ford automobiles, the beach, country music, NASCAR racing, "No mercy" checkers, the Democratic Party, construction projects and his home. He was fiercely independent to his last day. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Vardelle D. Yow; one brother, Rev. Howard Yow of Friends Home; two sons, Thomas B. Yow Jr. and Barry D. Yow and wife Mary Ann, all of Asheboro, NC; two daughters, Brenda Y. Parker and husband Dr. H.R. Parker and Dianne Y. Howard Baach Yow Sept. 13, 1912 - May 21, 2013 Rev. Howard Baach Yow, 100, of Greensboro, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 21, 2013. He was born in Guilford County on September 13, 1912, the second of six sons and a daughter, to Carl Hampton Yow and Lena Lydia Osborne Yow. He graduated from Guilford College and was happily married to Lalah Smith Yow until her death in 1992. He is survived by seven nieces, nine nephews and a large extended family. Howard and Lalah served the Society of Friends for 47 years at NC Quaker churches in Cedar Square, Kernersville, Wayne County, Hood Swamp, Pikesville, Winston-Salem, Liberty, Mount Airy, Dunn and Harmony at Winthrop. Additionally he served in Noblesville, Indiana and five years as Education Administrator of the Friends School in Kenya, West Africa. He was active in the Rotary Club and Boy Scouts. He was an avid reader, photographer, gardener, traveler, hunter, gunsmith, woodworker, long distance bicyclist, as well as an avid stock car race fan who attended all the Indy 500's during his ministry in Indiana. Howard's personal motto was: "Service Above Self" and he was especially proud of his ministerial part in the original planning, building and development of Friends Homes at Guilford; the family is very grateful for the loving care which he received from the staff there for the last 14 years of his life. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Centre Friends Meeting, 325 East NC Hwy 62, Greensboro, NC 27406, with the Rev. Terry Venable officiating. Interment will be in the Centre Friends Cemetery followed by a brief reception in the church Fellowship Hall.
