It was between local miners and the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency. At this time miners worked long hours in unsafe and dismal working conditions, while being paid low wages. Adding to the hardship was the use of coal scrip by the Stone Mountain Coal Company, because the scrip could only be used for those goods the company sold through their company stores. The miners, under John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers of America and Mary Harris "Mother" Jones were organizing the miners. About 3000 had signed union cards, and the Stone Mountain Coal Corporation fought back with mass firings, harassment, and evictions. Tensions were high when the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency sent Albert C. Felts and 12 other men to evict families that had been living at the Stone Mountain Coal Camp just on the outskirts of town. After the evictions had been made, Felts and his men went to the Urias Hotel at Matewan for dinner, then they walked toward the train depot to catch the train back to Bluefield, West Virginia. They were stopped by Matewan Chief of Police Sid Hatfield, who claimed to have arrest warrants from the Mingo County sheriff. Hatfield, a native of the Tug River Valley, was a supporter of the miners' attempts to unionize in the southern coalfields of West Virginia. Detective Felts and his brother Lee Felts then produced his own warrant for Sid Hatfield's arrest. News of the evictions soon spread around the town. The detectives were unaware they had been surrounded by armed miners, who watched intently from the windows, doorways, and roofs of the businesses that lined Mate Street. Sid Hatfield, his deputy,Fred Burgraff, and Mayor Cabell Testerman met with the detectives on the porch of the Chambers Hardware Store. It is still unknown whether it was Hatfield or the leading detective, Albert Felts, that shot Mayor Testerman first, though what followed was Sid Hatfield shooting Albert Felts. This began a gun battle that became known as the Matewan Massacre, or the Battle of Matewan leaving seven detectives and three townspeople dead, including the Felts brothers and the mayor of Matewan, Cabell Testerman. Some of the bullet holes from the battle can still be seen today in the old post office. Among the men who were indicted in the massacre were Reese Chambers, Ed Chambers, Talt Chambers, Hallie Chambers, Charles Kiser, Ben Mounts, Doug Mounts, Art Williams, William Bowman, Bowser Coleman, Jim Overstreet, Clare Overstreet, N. H. Atwood, Van Clay, Jess Boyd, Lee Toler, and John Patrick. [Note: Reese is his father, Talt is his brother, and Hallie is his cousin.] The most important eye-witness to this shooting was one Anse Hatfield (not "Devil Anse" Hatfield of the feud fame), who knew most of the men who took part in it and who testified before the Grand Jury, which indicted Sid Hatfield and others. This Anse Hatfield was the owner of the hotel where the Baldwin-Felts detectives stayed. A very short time thereafter, and after dark, he was assassinated by being shot while sitting in front of his hotel. A few days before he was killed, authorities say he received a letter threatening his life. On September 9, 1920, the Mingo County Grand Jury returned indictments in connection with the killing of Anse Hatfield, at Matewan against Sid Hatfield, chief of police of Matewan, Hallie Chambers, Ed Chambers, and Talt Chambers. With the exception of Talt Chambers, the men indicted were charged with seven counts of murder in connection the Battle of Matewan on May 19. Of those defendants whose charges were not dismissed, all were acquitted. When the charges against Hatfield, and 22 other people, for the murder of Albert Felts were dismissed, Baldwin-Felts detectives assassinated Hatfield and his deputy Ed Chambers on August 1, 1921, on the steps of the McDowell County courthouse in Welch, West Virginia. The two men were sent to stand trial on conspiracy charges for another incident, in Welch. Both men arrived in Welch on August 1, 1921, unarmed and accompanied by their wives. Several Baldwin-Felts men shot them on the McDowell County Courthouse steps. Hatfield was instantly killed. Ed was shot several more times, as his wife tried to defend him, and but Ed was finished off with a bullet in the head by Charles Everett Lively. None of the Baldwin-Felts detectives was ever convicted of Hatfield's assassination: they claimed they had acted "in self-defense".	CHAMBERS, Edward W. (I8210)

Sterret, aged 47, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Atlanta [Athens], Ga., on Feb. 17. He was a native of Rockbridge county, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mc. M. Sterrett. Mr. Sterrett is survived by his wife, the former Miss Annie [Anna] Marie Fudge, of Covington, two sons, Edwin H. Sterrett, Jr. of the Army Air Corps, stationed at Montgomery, Ala., and Andrew Fudge Sterrett, stationed at the Army Air Base in Richmond, and one daughter, Miss Susie Sterrett. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alden S. Anderson and Mrs. John K. Davidson of Lexington, and two brothers, Mc. M. Sterrett of Brownsburg and Thornton W. Sterrett of Indianapolis, Ind. He was buried in Montgomery, W. Va., on Feb. 20. Those attending the funeral from Rockbridge county were Mrs. Alden S. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Mc. M. Tilden to Rudolph F. Myers of Los Angeles. the Rev. Mr. Gilbert performed the ceremony, the bride being given away by her grandfather, Mr. Ogden. the young couple were attended by Miss Mildred E. Tilden, a sister of the bride and Horace J. Barton. Miss Bess Gilbreath was usher, Miss Alta Gilbreath played the wedding march, and Miss Dorothy Barton sang "Oh Promise Me." The surprise came after the ceremony, when the clergyman requested the newly married couple to exchange places with the best man and the bridesmaid, and Miss Mildred Tilden became Mrs. Horace J. Barton. The second wedding was a complete surprise to most of those present, not even Mr. and Mrs. Myers knowing what was to occur. The room were appropriately decorated and light refreshments were served. Excerpts from June Ogden Myers Pearson: Bakersfield, Where I Grew Up I was born at home in Bakersfield, Kern County on October 8, 1914. "Auntie Jones" (no relationship) had made a small apartment out of the back of her home, the 2nd or 3rd house south of 8th street on the west side of N Street. Mother and father rented it from her and that was home! Florence Tilden was the eldest of three girls born to Grace Odgen Tilden and Frank Bert Tilden. Grandmother Grace was very prim and proper; Frank was a contractor -- a very down to earth man who loved people and frequently had his men friends over for cards. Grampa was a wealthy man -- he had the only cement mixer in Los Angeles when there were no sidewalks! On one occasion, at least, he chartered the Catalina Ferry to take his three daughters and their friends to Catalina for the weekend! Because my grandparents came from such different backgrounds they separated when Florence was a senior in High School. They never divorced, but it was quite scandalous for married people to live apart; as a consequence, Mildred and Dorothy had nothing more to do with their Father. Because Florence was the eldest, she understood their differences and unhappiness and always made her Father welcome in our home. What a break for me -- I loved that man! He came to Bakersfield often in his touring car and we had memorable picnics in the foothills -- Arvin, Calente, Bodfish, Kernville, Walker's Basin, Glenville, Woody, Jack Ranch. He taught me about nature, about people and about enjoying life -- the world was a wonderful place to be! One of his best gems that I practiced all my life was: "Don't eat the apple in the barrel that is beginning to spoil; choose the very best apple in the barrel. If you don't, you will go through life with rotten things when you could have the very best!" Grandpa Tilden contracted to build one of the first big buildings in downtown Los Angeles, but a steel strike in the east prevented him from finishing the project on time. He lost everything! Everything except his love of life. He was a wonderful man in my eyes!. "Auntie Jones", in whose home I was born, was my Bakersfield grandmother. When I was in High School she became senile and had to live in a rest home. I went to see her almost every day and read children's books and poetry which made her laugh. One day she asked me to bring ice cream on my next visit, but the next day was rainy and I didn't go; the second day she was dead. I was so sad, but I had learned, the hard way, never put off to tomorrow what you can do today -- or do as much today as you can possibly crowd in -- especially if what you need to do is for someone else. Friendly Bakersfield allowed me to grow up naturally. "Auntie Jones" taught me to do what needed to be done NOW. Mother allowed me freedom and taught me compassion for others. Father taught me the basics of finance and instilled a strong sense of right and wrong. John gave me Love. Grandfather Tilden taught me to take the best the world had to offer -- to set my goals high and then Just Do It! My total environment let me be in control of myself and create my future!! Pocahontas Coal Co., died Wednesday morning, May 15, 1968, in St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield after a short illness. Born April 17, 1899 at Tom's Creek, Va., Wise County, he was the son of the late James John Edwin and Mary John Biggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Edwin Biggs, Jr. in 1953. Biggs was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy at Fort Defiance, Va. and attended West Virginia University. A veteran of WWI and WWII, he served in the south pacific in the Corp of Engineering as a Major. He has been president of the J.E.B. Coal Company since it was first originated in1950. He was a member of the Bluefield Country Club, Bluefield University Club and the Bramwell Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha McConnel Biggs of the home and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield.
