Bushman, John Walker p. 12 Humphrey was a major in the state militia and sheriff of King and Queen Co. He was regularly elected to the General Assembly for 9 sessions, and was a planter and gentleman who moved easily in society. His lineage was from Tidewater society that had intermarried for generations. He owned a carriage and entertained frequently. It was not unusual for there to be 18 people for dinner with seven dishes of meat, four vegetables, pickles, a fine pudding, pie, tarts, cheese, wine and cider. p. 15-16 Frances Temple was his first cousin. Humphrey also inherited Locust Grove, building the present house, after the second house burned down around 1816. The new house had fewer, but larger rooms, allowing the river breezes on both sides of the structure. An alley of locust trees framed the entrance. In 1820 he owned 745 acres, only 19 more landowners in King and Queen had more than he did, and only ten claimed more a thousand acres. On a tax list of 1800 Humphrey owned 6 horses, 4 wheeled vehicles, 18 adult and 6 teen-aged slaves.	WALKER, Maj. Humphrey (I6172)
33055	WALKER FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS 1709-1930 J. Thos. Walker borne Jany ye 25 1715 He was the famous Virginia explorer of southwestern VA. and the guardian of Thomas Jefferson. He was raised as Englishman in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Walker's first profession was that of a physician after he attended the College of William and Mary and studied under his brother-in-law Dr. George Gilmer. Walker became a man of status in the county when he married Mildred Thornton (widow of Nicholas Meriwether) in 1741, and acquires a large portion of land from her late husband?s estate. Here, Walker would set his roots and build his home known as Castle Hill, and have 12 children, who would become prominent Albemarle Co. citizens in their own rights. He began his path to establishing his status by becoming a vestryman in April 1744, a position he would hold until 1785. He served Virginia proudly as a delegate to the House of Burgesses from Albemarle County, a trustee to the newly formed town of Charlottesville. On July 12, 1749, the Loyal Land Company was founded with Walker as a leading member. After receiving a grant of 800,000 acres in what is now southeastern Kentucky, the company appointed Walker to lead an expedition to explore and survey the region in 1750. Walker was named head of the Loyal Land Company in 1752. During the expedition, Walker gave names to many topographical features including the Cumberland Gap. His party built the first non-Indian house (a cabin) in Kentucky (today's Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site). Walker kept a daily journal of the trip. At the age of 64, Walker again journeyed to the western areas of Kentucky and Tennessee to extend the border between Virginia and North Carolina westward. This controversial mapped border would forever bear the title of the "Walker Line" and today stands as the separating point between the two states. He also had great influence in dealing with Indian affairs. Walker represented Virginia at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix and Treaty of Lochaber (1770) and dealt with the peace negotiations after the Battle of Point Pleasant. In 1775, Walker served as a Virginia commissioner in negotiations with representatives of the Six Nations in Pittsburgh at Fort Pitt. 33057	WALKER FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS 1709-1930 Temple Walker son of Humphrey & Fanny Walker was born the 5th day of Decm 1790 Died, December 30th, 1868, at his residence, Mt. Elba, King & Queen, Virginia, Temple Walker, aged 78 years. He lived and died in sight of the place of his birth and through a long and useful life was beloved and honored by all who knew him. He was a man of sterling integrity, modest and unobtrusive, generous and social in his feelings, and of uns__ted hospitality. He in early life made a profession of religion, and united himself with the Baptist church at Bruington, then u___ ___ pastoral care of the eminent R. B. Semple. In the year 1833, being fully convinced that the cause, as plead by the feeble band of Disciples, was in accordance, with the word of God, he identified himself with them, knowing the odium and suffering which such a step would bring upon him. This step he never regretted. Dr. Jno. Duvall, himself and others, organized the chuch of Smyrna in the year 1833 (nearly all of them have passed away). At its organization he was chosen one of its elders, and remained in that position until his death. Through a long period of thirty-five years, ___ official duty he retained the love and ___ence of his brethren, faithfully discharging this duty, and on every Lord's day at his post, if health and weather would permit, deeply sympathising with the church and the cause, in all its sufferings and triumphs. For the last year or two, from debility he was unable to meet with the church, still his zeal did not abate. He kept his lamp burning and daily awaited his Master's summons. He retired in his usual health on the night of the 29th. A little after midnight he awoke, laboring under distressing symptoms, and in a few minutes, before all his family could reach his bedside, he passed quietly away. He was consious of his situation, and calmly met his last ____. Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume V Temple Walker, father of Lucy Taliaferro (Walker) Mooklar, was born in 1790, died in 1868. His ancestors came from England in 1652, located at Walkerton, King and Queen county, Virginia, and one of the descendants, Atwood Cluverius Walker, uncle of Foushee O. Mooklar, now resides on the original tract (Locust Grove) granted to the family by the King in 1652, the same never having passed out of the possession of the family. Temple Walker also resided on the ancestral estate, which he cultivated and improved. He was presiding magistrate for a number of years before the war, also was high sheriff and county surveyor, having made a plat of King and Queen county which was burned when the northerners set fire to the Court House.
