Mention is also made of Thomas, my eldest son, Francis, Joshua, daughter Martha and brother in law Joshua Haigh. This one document confirms Martha Haigh as being the person marrying Benjamin and the link to Francis in the next generation." | Whitaker, Benjamin (I12315)

Swedish birth records list him as Carl Wilhelm Ersson, Carl Wilhelm Pehrsson, and Carl Wilhelm Persson.
In 1901 a law required people to adopt permanent surnames to be passed onto successive generations. Before that time, most Swedish surnames are patronymic. Patronymic surnames changed with each generation. His father's name was Pehr Ersson, but under the Swedish naming system, Carl's last name would have been Pehrsson [Pehr's son] or Persson [Pers' son]. while a sister would be known as Pehrsdotter (daughter of Pehrs). When people used patronymics, a woman did not change her name at marriage.
The leads to the confusion that Carl was known as Pehrsson, Persson or Petterson not Alsen when he left Sweden. He was the son of Pehr Ersson. For his naturalization record in 1893 he dropped the Swedish naming system and used used his father's last name, but evidently changed it from Ersson to Alsen.
IMMIGRATION
According to his wife's passport application, Carl came to the US on the USS Catalonia, operated by the Cunard Line. Launched on May 14, 1881, the ship operated between Liverpool and Boston until 1889. It could carry 200 first-class passengers and 1,500 third-class passengers. Most likely Carl came as a third class passenger.
His own naturalization application indicated he arrived in Boston on 27 Aug 1887.

From Sweden
During the peak of the emigration, ships left from Göteborg every week, usually on Friday afternoon. Once underway, the trip to Hull took about 40 to 50 hours. The ships usually approached the eastern coast of England during the day or early evening of the following Sunday. The primary port city was Kingston-upon-Hull, commonly referred to as Hull. It was the home of the Wilson Line, which owned these three ships. The final hours of the journey took the immigrants up the River Humber where they would dock at the wharf.

Tate Families of the Southern States, Volume II, by Laura Mentzel and Ethel Updike, 1984
William Tate settled in Washington County about the time, John and Robert did and is thought to be a brother. He was on the tax rolls for 1784. On February 20, 1793, Joel Hobbs and wife Margaret sold 145 acres on both sides of Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River to William Tate. It would seem that he was not a public spirited man, however, there are so many acts attributed to the other William Tate over this period that I wonder if this William Tate was active, but the other William has received all of the credit, living in the same county as they did. He lived within five miles of Col. John and Robert Tate. He executed his will, September 15, 1803 in Russell County, VA, probated October 25, 1803 by wife Elizabeth.

Taught at Knappa High School in Knappa OR.
Notes on the school Facebook site about her and her husband Grady:
Message from her granddaughter
I'm not a Knappa Alum, but my grandmother was a physics teacher for decades at Knappa. Her name was Ann Pannell. She retired in the 80's and died in 1998. My grandfather, Grady Pannell, was the sportswriter for the Astorian. Does anyone remember them?
-------
I also remember your grandmother, Mrs. Pannell. I had her for a few classes. My favorite memory is from high school physics class. There were only two girls in this class, so we naturally were teamed up for labwork. In one session we were making an electromagnet, using paperclips end to end... to show how far along this chain the magnetic force would work. Well, we got this idea that if we hooked the paper clips together we could get a longer chain, and we certainly did! We kept moving the electromagnet higher and higher, and Mrs. Pannell looked over and saw how long our paper clip chain was, and her eyes about popped out of her head! Then she figured out what we had done. It was so funny!
-----
We will always remember your grandmother, Mrs. Pannell, and have many fond memories of her in High School. She was a wonderful teacher and person. Your grandfather, Grady, was always taking pix of our girls basketball games and giving us encouraging words. What a sweet couple! My mother in law ...was a sub at the High School and loved your grandmother too.
---------
I sure do remember your grandmother as my geometry teacher. She was patient with us Knappa rowdies, and always had a good attitude. She had a ready smile. Your grandfather too was well known in our community and Astoria, he was a good sports reporter, we liked seeing him at Knappas ball games. | Birdwell, Ann Allen (I8254)
