In 1849 he and his brother set out from New Orleans from California. Because of the illness of his brother they returned in 1851. In that years John C. Kirk bought land near Rosedale, Miss. and named this place Waxhaw after his family home place in S.C. He married in 1858, Edwina Ann Melchoir, dau. of John Casper Melchoir, who came to America from France in 1828, first settling at Frankfort, KY, where Mrs. Kirk was born. John C. James Alexander, designed "of Boghall," eldest son of Robert Alexander of Blackhouse, was born in 1634. He entered the University of Glasgow, where he graduated in 1653. Obtaining license as a probationer in 1655, he was the same year ordained minister of Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire. for his adherence to the Presbyterian polity, he was deprived by Act of Parliament, 11th June, and of the Privy Council, 1st October 1662. Accused of preaching and baptizing irregularly, he was summoned to Ayr in March 1669; he died of fever in the same year about the age of thirty-four (Fasti Eccl. Scot., vol. ii., p. 250).
He married Mary, daughter of John Maxwell of Southbar, descended from Adam Maxwell, fifth son of the first Lord Maxwell of Caerlaverock, by Elizabeth, daughter of William Cuninghame of craigends; she died in 1670. By her he had a son, John, and four daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Jean, and Anna. His daughter Jean was, in September 1689, married to William Greenless, one of the magistrates of Paisley (Reg. Abbey Parish of Paisley).
Reverand Alexander was a minister of the Convoy congregation, approximately 4 miles from Raphoe, Donegal County, Ireland, until his death in 1704. Convoy is in the Laggan Presbtery. He was educated at King's College in Aberdeen, Scotland from 1666-1670. He was ordained 12 Dec 1677 and became a minister in Convoy in 1678.
Reverend Alexander, a member of the Laggan Presbytery in Raphoe was imprisoned, which may have induced his brothers to flee to America. He upheld his religious beliefs which were contrary to Royal Authority and was fined 20. The story is he was imprisoned for calling a fast to protest the policies of the Church of England. He was unable to pay and was jailed in Dublin, Ireland on 8 October 1681 until 20 April 1682 when he was released to the Sheriff and the fine was reduced to 20 shillings, paid by his friends.
His seven sons and two daughters left Ireland for America in the ship Welcome, landed in 21 September 1670 in Maryland.
Most probably Reverend Alexander and his wife are presumed to have remained in Ireland. Their children settled in Somerset and later in Cecil County Maryland.

John was born in Northern Ireland and came to the colonies with this father in 1730. John Tate or Tait came to Augusta Co. VA from Pennsylvania. [Note: Some researchers have the location as being Bedford Springs in Lancaster Co. PA and Cumberland Co. PA, but this has not been documented.] He married Mary Doak and had five sons, James, John, William, Robert, and Thomas, plus a daughter whose name is not certain.

She indicates John Tate was born 1722 in Ireland, immigrated to Bedford Springs, PA and m Mary Doak in 1743. They had; Thomas, James, Eleanor, John and William Tate.
Recent research presents a convincing argument that John Tate's wife was actually Mary Mitchell. Please look at her record for the documentary evidence.

I received these notes from the owner of the book: "There are 6 short paragraphs dealing with the Tate family. The Tate section begins as follows, "The Tates came from the north of Ireland to Penn., and thence to Augusta about 1745. The first immigrant left four sons, James, William, John, and Robert. The descendants of the first brothers married among the Van Lears, Ewings, Moffetts and Finleys, of Augusta and Rockbridge."

The Tates are a tangle to unravel. There are two lines that may spring from John Tate and Sarah Beaty. This John Tate descendants tended to stay in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, VA and marry into other Scot-Irish families of the Shenandoah Valley i.e. the Campbells, McClungs, Stuarts, Finley, and Alexanders.
His brother Robert Tate, whose wife isn't known at this time, eventually settled in Washington Co. VA. His three sons, Col. John Tate, Robert Tate, and William Tate all played prominent roles in the history of Southwestern Virginia. They lived in four frontier counties(1) Botetourt Co., until 1772; (2) Fincastle Co., January 1773 to January 1777; (3) Washington Co., January 1777 to May 1786; (4) Russell Co., May 1786 until their deaths. They didn't move, but their land changed with formation of the counties.
Robert's descendants were the Traveling Tates. Their offspring founded Tatesville in Pulaski Co. KY or settled in Warren and Grundy Co. TN and DeKalb Co. AL. Robert's grandchildren ended up in Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma.
To make things even more confusing, they married women named Mary and named their sons John, Robert, William, and Joseph. Because of this, it isn't hard for generations to be confused. For example, Robert Tate of Washington/Russell Counties married Mary ? and had Joseph, Alexander, John, Aaron, James and Robert Jr. He is confused with his nephew, Robert Tate, son of John Tate and Mary Mitchell. This Robert married Margaret McClung and had about 11 children. Some researchers have combined these two Robert's families. See what I mean about a tangle of Tates?
Some researchers have the parents of Col. John Tate, Robert Tate, and William Tate as being Robert Tate born 27 FEB 1691 in New Kent Co. VA and died 1759 in St. Paul's Parish,Hanover Co. VA. But given the ties to Augusta Co. and the intermarriage with the Mitchells by William Tate, brother to Col. John and Robert, this may not be likely.
Hopefully DNA testing will clarify some of these lines.

Nov 5 1771, Samuel Doak wrote his will, leaving John Tate and John Finley to advise the executors. "John Alexander was granted his tenancy at Eredy on 1 May 1613 (one of the settlers). The name Eredy resembles Eradell in South Kintyre, granted in 1484 to Tarlach MacAlexander of Tarbert.
John Alexander of Eredy occupied several holdings. In the Hearth Tax roll he is styled, ?John Allexander of ye Dukes land? (Dukes = Duke of Lennox.) He appears to have had several sons? John Alexander, jun? Archibald Alexander of Ballybiglimore? William Alexander of Raphoe? Robert Alexander of Errigal. The seal attached to the will of John Alexander, younger of Eredy, dated 23 Sept 1690 displays a dexter arm embowed, the hand holding a dagger, the crest of his Scottish ancestors, the MacAlexanders of Tarbert. (pg 64)
... a rebellion of 1641-49. There was a battle at Glenmakwin near Raphoe with 500 Irish killed. In 1649 the Irish had successes, burning Manor Cunninghame and the town of St Johnstone. John Sr. and Jr. were both involved."

Original spelling of name was Schlosser.
Some years after his service in the Revolutionary War as Private First Class in Captain Stone's Company of the Second Battalion of the Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) Militia, Christopher migrated down the valley of Virginia to Montgomery County (from which Floyd County was formed 1831).
By 1803 Christopher and his family settled on 600 acres in what is now Floyd County. He owned over 1600 acres by the time of his death, Dec. 11, 1845. | Schlosser, Christopher (I8539)
