It is said that Gregory died young, but I don't see clear evidence either way. He doesn't show up in any records after his father's death except this one in 1669. It is not clear whether he is alive in 1669 or not.

Mary is not mentioned in Thomas Holt's Southampton Co Will in 1786 so I assume she died before that. Also a dau Nancy who was not yet 18 is mentioned specifically so I added that dau. The earliest Nancy could have born in 1770 and in 1775 Mary was 45 so likely Nancy was born in that period - best guess 1772. This limits Mary's death date to between 1770 (earliest that she could have had Nancy) and 1786 (year of will). Perhaps she died in childbirth with Nancy. Mary had 9 daughters: Ann (39), Lucy (38), Lydia (32), Malley (29), Patty (26), Fanny (24), Elizabeth (20), and Rebecca (17), and Nancy (~14). Also her sister Sarah Land (widow of Gregory Rawlings) had three Rawlings daughters: Suky (30), Rebecca (24) and Nancy (21).

In addition to the underage grand dau mentioned in the will specifically as "Polly's dau Nancy", one bequest is made to "granddaughters Rebecca and Ann" and one to "granddaugter Nancy Rawlings". Clearly the last one is Sarah's Nancy (21). That leaves us to explain "Rebecca and Ann". I surmise that he is leaving things to all his living, unmarried grand daughters and that Rebecca and Ann belonged to Mary.

May be Robert Partin who bought John's land in 1706. RFHA Dec 1990 p. 14.

1706 JOHN III SELLS HIS INHERITED LAND IN TWO PIECES (ONE TO HIS BROTHER IN LAW (I THINK) ROBERT PARTIN)

Surry Co Deeds No 5 (1694-1709) p. 348. John Rawlings of Southwark Parish, Surry, to Robert Partin of same - 200 acres north side of Blackwater Swamp, beign land taken up by my father Johnathan Rawlings by patent 29 Apr 1692. Rec. 7 May 1706.

1727 CHARLES PARTIN SELLS THAT LAND WHICH HE DESCRIBES AS "LATE IN THE TENURE OF JOHN RAWLINGS". THIS IS THE LAST VERIFIED SOURCE MENTIONING JOHN III (HE REPORTEDLY MARRIES MARY JONES AND HAS JOHN IV, WILLIAM, AND GREGORY IN THE 1730-40'S.)

Perhaps John III had been overseeing the land for Robert or Charles Partin from 1706-1727 and then decided to leave Surry Co.

Not mentioned in Thom Hix bond in 1674, but is mentioned in the 1673 will of her father. Does that mean she died in 1674? I think not. I think the Hux bond is a bond made when Tho. Hux md widow of John Rawlings agreeing to pass on the inheritence to the two children not of age (Mary and John). Elizabeth was of age so already received her inheritance.

Surry Co Court Records 1652-1684. Page 60 20 Apr 1674. Bond of Tho. Hux to deliver certain personal property to Mary Rawlings, dau. of Jno. Rawlings; dec. when of age or married and to Jno. son of Jno. Rawlings, dec'd, when of age. If Mary die before of age or married her share goes to Jno. If Jon. dies before of age his share returns to Tho. Hux. Wit. Roger Potter, Jno. King.

Surry Co Wills, Bk 5 p 147, JORDAN, Anna; Leg. - To John Rawlings, I give a servant boy. To Elizabeth Rawlings clothing. To John Shorsby, Thos. (Sr.?), and Robert Corrock to be Exers. 2 Oct., 1697. 22 July, 1697. Wit: Edward Scarbroo, Mary Rawlings. Bk 5, p. 147

The "old genealogists" say he moved to Lunenburg Co and died there in 1752. Supposedly had wife Mary (Jones?) and three children Gregory, John, and William. There is a John Rawlings that died in Lunenburg about 1752 and left a son William who was given a guardian (Henry May) in 1754.

1706 JOHN III SELLS HIS INHERITED LAND IN TWO PIECES (ONE TO HIS BROTHER IN LAW (I THINK) CHARLES PARTIN) John is now abt 26.

1716 JOHN III AND "MARY" WITNESS WILL IN SURRY CO (is Mary a wife or his mother?]

Surry Co WB p244. Will of Robert Nicholson dated 29 Sept 1716 - proved 17 Feb. 1719 names gr. Dau. Hannah; son Joshua; son John; son Robert; dau. Joyce; dau. Ann; dau. Elizabeth; Wife Joannah Joyce. Overseers: Mr. Nicholas Cocke and Sampson Lanier. Wits: Geo. Rawlings, JOHN RAWLINS, MARY RAWLINGS. (Note both Robert Nicholson and Sampson Lanier were witnesses to JOHN RAWLINGS II'2 will in 1702.)[Is Mary the mother of John (I thought she died abt 1710) or a wife of John? John is now about 36]

Perhaps John III had been overseeing the land for Charles Partin from 1706-1727 and then decided to leave Surry Co. John is now 47.

1739 PERHAPS AN INDICATION HE IS STILL IN SURRY CO (John would be 59-60)

Surry Co Deeds, Wills, Etc. #9 1738-1754 pg 119. 17 Mar 1739. Edward Ellis of southwarke Parish to Marmaduke Chatham of same. 170 acres (being a patent granted to John Rawlings on 20 Oct 1689) bounded by the said Chatham, Thomas Allstin's late Joshua Nicolson and the said JOHN RAWLINGS). Signed Edward Ellis and Jaen (X) Ellis. Wit: Joshua Nicolson and Charles Lucas. Rec: 19 Mar 1739.

(This could be (1) a boundry ref only to John II or (2) saying John III now owns this land or (3) John b c1719, the son of Gregory and Hannah, now owns the land.)

1745 PERHAPS LAND PATENTS TO JOHN III OR TO JOHN SON OF GREGORY

John Rawlings, Isle of Wight Co, 10 July 1745, 170a. In the Counties of Surry and Isle of Wight. On the north side of the three creeks. Beg.g &c by the side of the great swamp adjoining the land of Michael Upchurch. Patents 22, p. 312. (THIS MAY BE IN BRUNSWICK CO - MADE FROM ISLE OF WIGHT - CHECK IT OUT.) John would now be about 65.

1748 DOUBTFUL BUT COULD BE REF THAT JOHN IS STILL IN SURRY CO

Surry Co Deeds, Wills, Etc. #9 1738-1754 pg 298. 31 Aug 1748. Peter Martin of Surry Co to Thomas Eldridge of Prince George County for 35 pounds current money . 300 acres (being part in Surry County and part in Isle of Wight county) on which he now lives. Signed Peter (X) Martin. Wit William Clack, Thomas Pate, William (X) Morgan and JOHN RAWLINGS. Rec: 18 Oct 1748. (I suspect this John is Gregory's son John now about 29. He is tight with a John Morgan in the 1760's)

Gap (1727-1754)

See either John died 1747 in Northampton Co NC or John died 1752 in Lunenburg. John either died at 67 or 72.

When this will is made, John Rawlings II is about 42 and his son John Rawlings III is about 18. Elizabeth would likely be John III's sister Elizabeth, age ~17. I assume this is a bequest from Anna to her grandchildren. Why no mention of their brother Gregory who would be about 12? Who is Mary Rawlings? I assume it is Mary Sowerby Collier Rawlings, Anna's daughter.

NOTED EDUCATOR OF THE DEAF

Mary Caroline McClelland Tate was born in Fulton, Missouri around 1858 but was raised in Kentucky. It is thought her father was killed in the Battle of Vicksburg. Her mother, a nurse, died about the same time, near the same place. She became a ward of Thomas Nesbit. Mary attended Sayer Institute in Lexington, KY and Fulton Female Seminary.

She became a teacher at the Missouri School for the Deaf in 1871 and was assigned to the newly created position of articulation teacher. In October, 1872 Mary traveled with Supt. William Dabney Kerr to the Illinois School at Jacksonville. There she received instruction from Miss Cornelia Trask, an unusually skilled speech teacher who was expert in the use Alexander Melville Bell's Visible Speech symbols. (Mr. Bell was the father of Alexander Graham Bell.) She returned to MSD and organized rotating classes in articulation. She taught speech and lipreading exclusively. Mary worked with selected pupils who came to her from their regular classes at scheduled times. Back in their classrooms, her pupils continued to receive instruction through sign language. This field was so new that it was necessary for her position to be approved by the Legislature.

On August 15, 1878 she married James Nolley Tate who succeeded William Dabney Kerr as superintendent of MSD. The Tates left Fulton in 1896 for the Minnesota School for the Deaf in Faribault.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide_of_Maurienne

She was the daughter of Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgundy and niece of Pope Callixtus II, and became the second wife of Louis VI of France.

They had seven sons and one daughter:

Philip of France (1116-1131)

Louis VII (1120-18 November 1180), King of France

Henry (1121-1175), Archbishop of Reims

Hugues (b. c. 1122)

Robert (c. 1123-11 October 1188), Count of Dreux

Constance (c. 1124-16 August 1176), married first Eustace IV, Count of Boulogne and then Raymond V of Toulouse.

Philip (1125-1161), Bishop of Paris. not to be confused with his elder brother.

Peter (c. 1125-1183), married Elizabeth, Lady of Courtenay

Adelaide was one of the most politically active of all France's medieval queens. Her name appears on 45 royal charters from the reign of Louis VI. Among many other religious benefactions, she and Louis founded the monastery of St Peter's (Ste Pierre) at Montmartre, in the northern suburbs of Paris.

After Louis VI's death, Adélaide did not immediately retire to a convent, as did most widowed queens of the time. Instead she married Matthieu I of Montmorency, with whom she had one child. She remained active in the French court and in religious activities.

In 1153 she retired to the abbey of Montmartre, which she had founded with Louis VII. She died there on 18 November 1154. She was buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Pierre at Montmartre, but her tomb was destroyed during the French Revolution.

Aenor was a daughter of Viscount Aimery I, Viscount of Châtellerault and his wife, Dangereuse de L' Isle Bouchard (d. 1151). Aenor married William X of Aquitaine, the son of her mother's lover, and had three children with him:

Eleanor of Aquitaine, Duchess of Aquitaine, and wife of both Louis VII of France, and Henry II of England, one of the most powerful women in Europe of her generation.

Petronilla of Aquitaine, wife of Raoul I, Count of Vermandois.

William Aigret (who died at the age of four with his mother at Talmont-sur-Gironde)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimery_I,_Viscount_of_Ch%C3%A2tellerault

Aimery was born to Boson II de Châtellerault and his wife, Aleanor de Thouars. His paternal grandparents were Hugues I de Châtellerault and his wife, Gerberge. His maternal grandparents were Aimery IV, Viscount of Thouars and Aremgarde de Mauléon.

Aimery was married to Amauberge, called Dangereuse, the daughter of Bartholomew de l'Isle Bouchard and his wife Gerberge de Terrasson. Their marriage produced at least three children:

Hugh, succeeded his father as Viscount of Châtellerault

Raoul, who became the lord of Fay-la-Vineuse through his marriage to Elisabeth de Faye

Aenor (c.?1103 ? March 1130), who married William X, Duke of Aquitaine. She was the mother of Duchess Eleanor, Petronilla, and William Aigret, who died at the age of four.

In 1115, after seven years of marriage, Amauberge/Dangereuse was "abducted" from her bedchamber by William IX, Duke of Aquitaine. She was taken to a tower in his castle in Potiers called Maubergeonne. As a result, Amauberge or Dangereuse was nicknamed La Maubergeonne. Abductions like these were quite common among nobles during the Middle Ages. However, in this particular case she seems to have been a willing contributor to the affair.

The Duke of Aquitaine, the earliest known troubadour whose work survives, was quite popular with the women of his time and was known to have had many affairs. However, the Viscountess would become his mistress for the rest of his life.

There is no record of complaint by Aimery. This is believed to be because the Viscount feared the wrath of his powerful and volatile overlord. It would be the Duke's wife, Philippa of Toulouse who took action against the "abduction" and affair. Her actions would lead to both William and Dangereuse being excommunicated by the Pope. William used his wealth and power to eventually reconcile with the Pope and was accepted back into the Church.

In 1121 Aimery and Dangereuse's daughter, Aenor, married William IX's son and heir, who would become Duke William X of Aquitaine. It is believed that this union came about at Dangereuse's urging. Historians don't see another reason for the union of such a powerful man to the daughter of a minor vassal. Not only that, but Aenor was the daughter of the woman the future duke hated for her role in the treatment of his mother. Despite the cause, the marriage led to the birth of Eleanor of Aquitaine and made Aimery an ancestor of some of Europe's most famous nobles and rulers

Through his daughter he was the grandfather of Eleanor of Aquitaine, who would become Duchess of Aquitaine (in her own right) as well as queen of both France and England. Eleanor was arguably the most celebrated woman in Medieval European history.

Through Eleanor, Aimery was an ancestor of various nobles and monarchs including: Richard I of England, Marie, Countess of Champagne, John of England, Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany, Joan, Queen of Sicily, Eleanor, Queen of Castile, Matilda, Duchess of Saxony and Henry the Young King.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_de_Lusignan,_Countess_of_Surrey

Alice was a member of the House of Lusignan, the second eldest daughter of Hugh X de Lusignan, "le Brun", Seigneur de Lusignan, Count of La Marche and Isabella of Angoulême, queen dowager of England as the widow of King John.

She was a half-sister of King Henry III of England. Shortly after her arrival in England from France in 1247, her half-brother arranged her marriage to the John de Warrene. the Earl of Surrey, which incurred some resentment from the English nobility.

The marriage caused some resentment among the English nobility, as they considered the King's Lusignan siblings to be parasites and a liability to the Kingdom. Many prestigious honours and titles were granted to the Lusignans. Alice was also said to have been disdainful of all things English.
