The population of Syracuse alone doubled in the years between 1880 and 1900. Archimedes Russell was one of the area's busiest architects during this hectic period. He completed nearly 850 commissions during his forty-three year career, almost all of them in central New York. He was responsible for almost 600 commissions in the Syracuse area alone. By 1900 Russell had contributed more to the architecture of central New York than any other architect. Born in Andover, Massachusetts in 1840, Russell received his early training from his father, a carpenter-builder, and John Stevens, a prominent Boston architect. At the age of 22, Russell came to Syracuse and joined the office of the city's leading architect, Horatio Nelson White. He opened his own office in 1868. From 1873 to 1881 he served as a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. In 1906 Russell took Melvin L. King as his partner and the firm was renamed Russell and King. Russell was not only the city's most prolific architect following the Civil War, he was also one of its most resourceful. As they became available, he mastered the use of new techniques and materials growing out of America's growing technological capabilities, for instance cast ornamental panels composed of terra cotta and iron. A local newspaper article said of Russell, "His repertoire of styles and devices for ornamentation was endless and he was able to give the people of an era when prestige and ostentation were held synonymous exactly what they wanted." His name has also been given as Beverly William Cluverius, I think Whiting is correct. His grandmother was Susanna Whiting who married Gibson Cluverius. Tyler was usually quite accurate with his information, and there was a family connection through the Seawell family who married into the Tyler's. Clinton C. Potter C. C. Potter, of Bowling Green, Ky., whose name has become a house word In connection with the Potter Orphan Home, passed to his reward Monday, October 22. The burial was Tuesday afternoon, October 23. Brother and Sister Potter have been blessed, through their long' lives, with remarkable health, and Brother Potter, although eighty-five years of age. showed little signs of breaking and was sick really little more than two weeks before his death. . . . Ben F. Taylor, resident evangelist of Twelfth Street Church, preached the funeral discourse, and was assisted in reading and prayer by F. L. Rowe and W. L. Karnes. The body was laid to rest in the old Potter burial ground, some distance from town, where most of the Potter family and the Hagermans are buried. The memory of this great character will live on. The following biographical sketch is taken from the local paper: Brother Potter was born at the old Potter home in the Trinity neighborhood of the county on October 21 1849, and was a son of Lewis and Elizabeth Hagerman Potter. On October 15, 1879, he married Mrs. Mary J. Dunn Potter, who survives. Mr. Potter was the last member of a family of thirteen children. Mr. and Mrs. Potter established and built the Potter Bible College, on the Nashville road near the city, in 1901, and financed the school until 1913, conducting it for the benefit of young people, many of whom would have been denied the advantages of an education but for the presence of the institution. In 1914 the buildings were converted into an orphanage, and the property has been used for that purpose since. The Potter home and surrounding grounds opposite the school property were turned over to the Potter Orphan Home Permanent Endowment, and the Church of Christ also supplied about $10,000 to the permanent endowment fund, which is used for maintenance of the orphanage. About three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Potter made a contribution of $15,000 to the endowment fund. Mr. Potter was prominent in the affairs of the Twelfth Street Church of Christ which he served as an elder. When the original building was erected, he gave the lot on which the church stands, and was the principal donor to the fund with which the construction was financed. The floral decorations were many and beautiful. The tribute from the Twelfth Street Church was a large floral blanket over the casket. The orphans sent in a beautiful floral piece, and the directors of the home also had an immense white wreath, and other offerings were elaborate and beautiful.	Potter, Clinton C. (I23800)

Oldest Person to Receive State Aid Mrs. Christian left home last November to Vote for Roosevelt. Charleston, W.Va., June 4 (AP)-Comfort Daniels Christian, 109 year old mountain woman who left her native fastnesses but once in the past forty years has a new claim to fame. She is the oldest person in West Virginia receiving a grant from the Public Assistance Department, it was disclosed today. Mrs. Christian, the mother of 16 children, first came into the public eye in 1932, when she left her little McDowell county cabin to vote for President Roosevelt. The records of the Public Assistance Department show she was born in Mingo county in 1828, before Andrew Jackson assumed the presidency and more than 20 years before the fist California gold rush. She lives one mile west of Panther, W.Va., on Panther Creek. The aged woman, her hair a snowy white and her face deeply furrowed was discovered by a party of Welch Kiwanis Club members who distributed Christmas baskets of food to residents of her section several years ago. Mrs. Christian has 84 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. -------- Welch Daily By Brenda West When the WDN Coal Edition was published March 30, one section featured an unidentified photo captioned "Way Back When" We printed the picture hoping someone in our circulation are could provide some information. By the following Monday morning the photo mystery was solved. Mrs. Ethel Christian Manes, 71 of Coon Branch near Ieager, said excitedly "That's my grandmother, Comfort Mounts Christian and the child on her lap is a granddaughter, Louis Christian Chafin of Matewan. I was just thrilled to see that in the paper after all these years! "The photograph was made when Granny went to vote for Roosevelt. I don't recall which election it was, but because of her age it was the first and last time she ever went to the polls. She wanted to voter for Roosevelt because he had been responsible for her receiving a pension check. Originally Published in 1936 --------------- The old photo was used in connection with a news item pertaining to the reelection of President Franklin Roosevelt when he sought a second term in office. Roosevelt won by a sweeping victory. Publication date was Nov. 4 1936 and it reads as follows: Mrs. Comfort Christian, 109, went two miles to a voting booth at Panther election day, to cast her first vote. When she got there she was told that she had not been registered. Mrs. Christian remarked to precinct workers: 'I'll come back tomorrow.' The aged woman said she had always been registered a Republican, but that her husband , who had been dead 40 years, was a Democrat and she knew how he would have voted had he been alive. 'He would have voted for President Roosevelt,' she remarked. 'Because he is a good man and has helped me.' Mrs. Christian lives alone. Despite her age she works her small garden each year and looks after her house. She was taken to the voting place to cast her ballot by her son, Mose, who lives on Huff Creek. Mose said his mother had asked that she be taken to the voting place to cast her ballot. She said the reason she had never voted before was that she was registered a Republican and 'didn't want to vote opposite my husband.'" When Comfort's story appeared in the newspaper, she lived at Panther near the old Lathor Coal Co. tipple. Prior to that she was among the early homesteaders of Christian Ridge on the Wilmore side. During our phone conversation, Ethel revealed that all the family knew Comfort as "Granny." Stories of the bristly mountain woman's colorful lifestyle had persisted since her death nearly 50 years ago. Subsequently, Ethel invited me to her home to hear more. Cathy Patton, also a history buff, graciously accompanied me. Present that afternoon were Ethel's cousins, Pearl Moore of Matewan; Lucy Bailey, 74, of Hanover; her daughters, Deloise Morgan of Garden Gap and Janet Toler of Hanover. The latter two had scant knowledge of their family tree, and were eager to hear the tales unfold. After introduction, conversation began in earnest. "Granny was tiny but tough," said Lucy. "She had to be to raise a bunch of kids (12 of her own, and four grandchildren). She couldn't have been more than four and a half feet tall, but she was full of spunk. "Yeah," chimed in Ethel, "if you did something she didn't like, she took that cane you see in the picture and whacked you across the hand or on top of the head. Once when I climbed the fence to pick her gooseberries she took the cane to me. I never bothered the berries again," she added ruefully. "Hey do you recall how she would shake the grate in the stove and grab a live coal out of the bottom to light her pipe" queried Ethel. "Sure," answered her cousins. "Not only that, she would put the glowing ember back and never get burned." Ethel continued, "In the winter, Granny used to take flat irons,heat them the stove, and wrap them in wool to keep her feet warm at night. She always had a remedy for everything. Like when she wanted us kids to go home if we overstayed our welcome. She would tell us all kinds of scary things. Then we'd race for home, our feet barely touching the ground." "I loved how Granny used to spin the yarn about the near in the tree," reminisced Pearl. "One day she'd been out gathering chestnuts, her apron almost full. She was lost in thought, when all of a sudden she noticed the limbs in top of the tree just above her were shaking real hard. Granny said 'I looked up in that tree and there was the biggest bear I ever did see. I had woke him up. I was so scared, I forgot all about the chestnuts. I dropped everyone of 'em and got out of there quick as I could." "Granny wasn't scared of anything," Ethel emphasized. "She had a rough life, caring for such a large family, and under trying conditions. I've heard her talk about how she even crawled into a panther's cave to collect fur the animal had shed. "Old folks learned the habits of panthers, so they knew when the dens were empty. Granny would sneak in, grab the fur and scoot out. She wove the fur on a loom to make socks and other things. She also pieced a lot of quilts and raised all of her food." According to her descendants, Granny was as rugged as the land that sustained her. She endured bitter sorrow: tragically widowed while pregnant with twins; their subsequent still births; a son murdered while lodged in jail; another lost in a coal mining accident; her family's involvement in a clash similar to that of the Hatfield-McCoy feud. On two separate occasions Comfort suffered personal injury when struck by a shifter (slow moving coal engine). She had been picking up coal along the tracks where she lived. After her injuries healed, the feisty woman was forced to slow down, relying on a cane for mobility. Ethel laughed, "I used to watch fascinated when Granny marched out into her garden slinging weeds with a hoe in one hand and a cane in the other. She never let anything defeat her." Three Deaths in One Family Three members of one family passed away in one week at the home of Elijah Barnett on the head of Dry Fork. On Wednesday of last week his sister, Miss Barnett, died aged 89, and on Saturday his wife. Shown Barnett, passed away aped 76, and on Monday of this week Mr. Barnett joined the loved ones, he being in his 84th year. All the deaths were due to the infirmities of old age. The Barnetts were raised on Dry Fork, in West Virginia, near where Yukon is now located. Several years ago they Bold their property to the Yukon Coal Company and moved to the Barker farm in this county where they have since resided, and all three were buried in the family burying ground on their present home place. Big Stone Gap Post, June 14, 1911, p. 6 THREE DEATHS IN ONE FAMILY Last Monday Elijah Barnett died at his home oh Dry Fork, aged 83 years. The Saturday before, his wife, 76 years old, was buried. A few days before, in the same week, his maiden sister, Sallie, who lived with him, died, aged 89 years. Mr. Barnett and his wife died of pneumonia, and the sister may also have had the same disease. The deaths of these aged people occurring in the same house within a weeks time, is a remarkable coincidence. We recall no similar occurrence. Mr. Barnett came to this county from West Virginia about a year ago. A few days ago he was in town, and called at this office, appearing in good health and reasonably active for a man of his years.
