24651	She was the youngest daughter and fourth child of the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. Known as The Queen of Oyster Bay and The First Lady of Oyster Bay by its Long Island residents, Ethel was instrumental in preserving both the legacy of her father as well as the family home, "Sagamore Hill" for future generations, especially after the death of her mother Edith in 1948. During World War I, Ethel, now a nurse served in France in the same hospital as her husband served as a surgeon. Later, she became involved with the Red Cross. In her later years, Derby devoted more time to the American Civil Rights Movement, a cause she had long been devoted to. She worked on a smaller scale, though no less committed than her first-cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt and believed in solving local problems before working nationally. When she felt black residents were being discriminated against, Derby formed a committee to bring low-income housing into Oyster Bay. The proposal initially was rebuffed by most of the residents. Ethel had her friends meet at her house where she convinced them that this was a good idea and the housing project was successfully completed. 24655	Sherrill started his singing career at the age of 4 singing in his local Nazarene Church in Montgomery, AL, where Mom and Dad Speer attended. Sherrill started his professional music career at the tender age of 14. He won the Mr. America Youth Singer at the Coliseum in Montgomery, AL. At age 15, he cut his first solo LP ? A Name I Highly Treasure. He attended Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, TN. He then proudly served his country serving in the Air Force with the Air Force Strategic Command Band, Omaha, NE. In 1961, he joined the Singing Speer Family. While with the Singing Speer Family he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. This was the stepping stone for his legendary 50 plus year career in Southern Gospel Music. Sherrill teamed up with Jake Hess and formed the Illustrious Imperial Quartet, which won him another induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. In late 1966, Sherrill moved to California and re-joined the Songfellows Quartet headed up by Bob Jones, Sr. He then moved on to the Plainsmen who was working with Gov. Jimmie Davis. Then had a solo career and later put together a group that Elvis later named VOICE. He was singing at the Grand Ole Opry when he got the call from the Elvis Presley Assn. to become Elvis? backup singer. He stayed with Elvis, as a solo act, up until Elvis? death in 1977. Sherrill Nielsen (1975 - 1977) - sang with both the Imperials and Voice (see above), and in 1975 began backing Elvis on stage, often as a "guest lead vocal", like on "O Sole Mio / It's Now Or Never", and "Softly As I Leave You". He was also present at Elvis' last Graceland recording sessions (October 29 - November 1, 1976). In 1990, Sherrill moved to his grandfather?s homeland of Denmark and stayed there for 14 years. While residing in Denmark, he began writing gospel music; he introduced Southern Gospel Music to the churches, performed concerts and traveled all over Europe. In 2004, he got a life changing e-mail from Houston, TX and moved to Houston in June, 2004. The life changing message was from his first love, Brenda Hall, whom he married in December 1963. They went their separate ways in 1967 and 40 years after the fact, the two love birds got back together, remarried and thus, he put VOICE back together. He received two Legendary Awards for his dedication to gospel music, a Proclamation from the Governor of Alabama, and in June 2011 was scheduled to be honored by the Music City Gospel Showcase as ?As Pioneer and Legendary Performer?. In March, 2010, Sherrill was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. He lived his life with dignity and lived his life to the fullest. Sherrill, an undisputed legend in gospel music, is the only person to be inducted into the gospel music hall of fame as a member of 3 different groups, The Speer Family, The Imperials and the Statesmen. 24665	Simon moved to New Sharon, Franklin Co., ME, where his Uncle John and Betsey Moody Bean settled and next door to Industry in Franklin Co., where his Uncle Jonathan and Aunt Sarah Moody Goodridge settled. It is also where his maternal grandparents Samuel and Hannah Severance Moody had moved in 1797. The Beans and Moodys were pioneer families in Franklin Co. In 1781, the first settlers arrived, the same year a sawmill was established. On February 1, 1794, Sandy River Plantation was incorporated as Farmington. Beginning with a cluster of log houses at Farmington Falls, the town grew quickly and prospered. Agriculture was an important early occupation, with hay a principal product. Orchards yielded apples and other fruit. Farmington became one of the largest wool producing towns in New England, with many herds of sheep grazing the foothills of the Appalachians. The area's water power attracted industry, including five lumber mills, three gristmills, a spool factory and a tannery.[An important element in Simon's profession as a cordwainer, shoemaker who makes leather shoes, may also do repair work as a cobbler as well Simon was of New Sharon when he filed marriage intentions to Polly Bailey in Farmington January 22, 1807 Simon Russell, cordwainer of New Sharon, left records of real estate transactions between December 27, 1807 and March 27, 1809. The history of Farmington, Maine notes that Polly Bailey was born on May 7, 1788, the daughter of Eliphalet and Rebecca Perham Bailey, that she married Simon Russell, had 12 children and removed to Ohio. In 1812 Simon lived at Boyle, NY on property adjoining Jonathan Russell. Simon remained in Monroe Co., NY, (at that time Ontario, Co.) for about 8 years before moving to Ohio. An excerpt from Fulton Co. Ohio History states that Simon and his wife, Polly (Bailey) Russell, were originally from Maine, that they settled in Monroe County, New York, within the Lake County, being pioneers of that section of the state. Simon placed advertisements in the Painesville (Ohio) Telegraph announcing his boot and shoemaking business, consistent with his identification as a cordwainer in Maine. [Note from Cheryl Tate Duke: It is interesting that his profession follows through other branches of the family. Simon's nephew Warren Russell, son of Clement, who established the Virginia Russells, was involved in shoemaking and tanneries. Warren learned the trade from his older brother, Benjamin, who migrated to PA and eventually to MD.] The Fulton Co.
