PERDUE, Martha Chaffins, died on November 14, 2020. Martha was born November 1, 1947, to Archie M. Chaffins and Katherine T. Chaffins. Though she is gone, her larger-than-life personality and trademark flamboyant style will not be forgotten. Martha entered heaven cocktail in hand, ready to kick up the party a notch or two. All who loved her know she arrived at the pearly gates perfectly styled in her signature zebra and leopard prints. She and the angels are probably laughing while she watches over us, making fun of our \"plain boring\" clothes, even as she protects us. No one could pull off leopard and zebra print like Martha. Heaven just became a lot more entertaining because Martha brought laughter and fun anywhere she went.
Martha completed both her bachelor\'s and master\'s degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University. Martha started teaching straight out of college and continued teaching until her retirement. Teaching was Martha\'s true calling. She shared her passion for life and learning with the thousands of children she taught over her long career. Her pride was in her school and all of her students, who loved her as she loved them.
Martha had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities, no matter how mundane. Her larger than life personality and laugh were contagious to everyone she met.
Martha is survived by her sons, Christopher Perdue and Preston Perdue; daughters-in-law, Susan Perdue and Stephanie Perdue; brother, David Chaffins; sister-in-law, Anne Chaffins; and grandchildren, Erik Perdue, Spencer Perdue, Avery Perdue, Archer Perdue and Hayden Perdue. The family would like to extend their heart felt thanks to Bonnie and Ricky Anderson, Cathie Simpson and all the nurses at the Laurels of Bon Air for all their care and compassion.

Robert Alexander was one of the early settlers of Augusta Co. VA.
A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia by Oren F. Morton, published in 1920 source for the following information:
Robert, son of William Alexander, Sr., came from near Londonderry, in 1737, and lived about ten years near Philadelphia. He was well-to-do for those days, and was a man of character, education, and influence. Robert, a Master of Arts of the University of Dublin, founded the school which finally grew into Washington and Lee University, but was himself a resident of Beverly Manor.

For the census it is correct to have the place of birth as Virginia before 1863, but afterwards it is was West Virginia, but the census taker still put Virginia for those children who were actually born in West Virginia. Robert Tate was born July 31, 1768 in Fincastle, Botetourt County, VA, son of Col. John and Mary Bracken Tate. He settled very early in 1773 in Augusta County, VA. In 1776, Washington County was organized so he grew up in the same place on Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain and Holston River. He died in Pulaski County, KY. He married Winnie Atkinson, and settled in KY in about 1806 with his siblings, Major Samuel Bracken Tate, Hannah Fugate and Martha Buster. They were living in KY in 1810 with two children. His will February 15, 1844, probated August 19, 1844 with heirs only: Mary Short, Lidia and Joseph Smith, Samuel B. Tate, Peter Smith and Samuel. Samuel was executor. Witnessed by H. N. Beaty.

Robert was the son of Polly Shortridge (daughter of Robert Shortridge and Rebecca Brown) and Edmond Murphy. In 1859, Edmond was murdered by Joseph Staton. The murderer escaped from jail and was a fugitive. In order to protect herself and her children, Polly began to use Shortridge as their surname. Later on, some of the children returned to using Murphy, some did not.
Note: Some of his siblings used Shortridge and Murphy as their surnames at different times, which can be confusing, while others kept the name Shortidge and others used Murphy.
Robert is the brother of Clarissa Shortridge who married Sarah's brother, John T. Chambers.
He was a deputy sheriff in Grundy and was murdered transporting a prisoner in 1905. | Family F6454

Funeral Services This Afternoon For Mrs. Crump
The funeral of Mrs. Eupemia Tyson Crump, wife of Earl A. Crump of Wilson will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the East Lumberton Baptist Church, Rev. Robert W. Bradshaw, of Wilson will offficiate assisted by Rev. B. M. Glisson and Rev. A. P. Stephens of Lumberton. Burial will be in the Meadowbrook Cemetery.
Mrs. Crump died early yesterday morning in a hospital in Wilson. A short service will be held this morning at Hunts Funeral Home in Wislon, after which the body will be brought to Lumberton where it will be placed in the East Lumberton Baptist Church for an hour prior to the funeral service.
Surviving Mrs. Crump are her husband; four sisters, Mes. W. O. Edmond, Mrs. C. A. Crump, Mrs. C. D. Brothers and Mrs. Tred Tuton, all of Lumberton; three brothers, Russell Tyson of Lumberton, Grover Tyson of Lumberton and Thurman Tyson of Boston, Mass. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Edwin Tyson of Lumberton.

Rowan County marriage bond dated 8 February 1782. Daniel Bentley and Peter (his mark) Lewis signed the bond. Nancy Lewis was a member of the family who established the Lewis Quaker Meeting House that existed as early as 1771 about two miles north-northeast of the Bentley homestead. Shortly after their marriage, Daniel and Nancy left Rowan County in 1782 with Thomas and Hannah Bentley and the rest of the family to settle in the Indian Creek area of eastern Lincoln County, North Carolina. Daniel and Nancy would later remove to Washington County, Virginia, for a few years and then on to Perry County, Kentucky.
The Perry County area would later become Floyd County, and finally Letcher County.
Daniel and Nancy (Lewis) Bentley are buried in the hilltop Bentley family cemetery located near Neon Junction in Letcher County. His tombstone reads "Daniel Bentley Born in England Died Jan. 15, 1839." Nancy's tombstone reads "Nancy Wife of Daniel Bently Born in England Died Oct. 4, 1843."
There has been heavy discussion among descendants as to the phrase "Born in England" which is found on both Daniel and Nancy's tombstones. In looking at the stones of Daniel, Nancy, John, and Margaret one notices all the stones are similar in appearance with a rounded top and the picture of a flying dove within the circumference of a circle at the top of the stone. An ascending dove, or flying bird, represents rebirth; the transport of the departed's soul to Heaven.
One would venture to guess these stones were all erected within a close time period of each other; thus perhaps offering an explanation the place of birth on Daniel and Nancy's tombstones was given by a descendant and erected at a later date. Land records seem to confirm Daniel's parents, Thomas and Hannah Bentley, were in Maryland at the time of their marriage, so it seems more reasonable to think Daniel was born in the Frederick County area of Maryland. | LEWIS, Nancy (I8042)

Lebanon, Va.
H. John Tate, 85, former Russell County treasurer, School Board member and state legislator, died in a Lebanon Hospital Thursday afternoon.
He had served two terms as county treasurer and one term as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He was a member of the Lebanon Memorial Methodist Church and the oldest member of Stewart's Chapel Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Ada Jessee Tate; three daughters, Miss Mildred Tate and Mrs. Margaret Dickenson, Lebanon, and Mrs. Kathleen (?), Irvington, N.J.; two sons, Thomas, Holeyville, Ala., and Dr. Leland B.Tate, Blacksburg, Va.; seven sisters; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
