24008	Otis never married and was killed in 1917 under mysterious circumstances while guarding a railroad bridge at Cedar Bluff in World War I. His death certificate says he was a watchman for the N&W Railroad, but the Clinch Valley News says he was working for the Baldwin-Felts Agency. The family thought his body was placed on the bridge and was run over by the next train. During World War I, the agency?s talents were given freely to the United States Government for the protection of industries and apprehension of German spies and others considered enemies to the United States. U.S. entry into World War I in 1917 sparked a boom in the coal industry. The Baldwin-Felts Agency oversaw security operations in the Norfolk & Western Railway?s coalfield district. The company investigated train robberies, wrecks, and thefts as well as providing guards for railway and mine payrolls, as well as to accompany coal trains into the coalfields. Among labor union members of the coal mines, Baldwin?Felts agents were regarded as hired thugs, as evidenced in the shoot out at Matewan, WV, known as the Matewan Massacre. After the agency closed its doors in 1937, most of the company's files were destroyed or lost. The largest collection of extant files is housed at the Eastern Regional Coal Archives in Bluefield, West Virginia. NEWSPAPER ARTICLE Clinch Valley News, 6 April 1917 Guardsman Killed Otis Whitaker, age 23 years, a Baldwin-Felts guard, was run over and killed by train No. 85 near Cedar Bluff Monday morning. Whitaker was one of the guards employed by the railroad company in watching the bridges and tunnels on the Clinch Valley. He went to work Saturday night. An inquest was held yesterday morning, and the investigation developed that from the position in which the body was found he had evidently gone to sleep on the track. His feet and legs were several feet from the rest of his body. A pocketbook containing several dollars in money and a fine watch were found on the track, the watch having stopped at 3:21. Whitaker was placed in charge of three bridges near Cedar Bluff in keeping with the purpose of the N. & W., to use every precaution to prevent the interruption of traffic by enemies of the United States who might be incited to acts of violence by the declaration of war against Germany. The dead boy is a son of Hiram Whitaker, a well known citizen of Cedar Bluff. 24015	Parsons, KS, Newspaper Obituary, Monday September 24, 1973 Charles D. Tate, 2430 Washington, died at 11:25 A.M. Saturday in the Katy Memorial Hospital following an illness of three years. He was 78 and last entered the hospital on August 7. Tate retired from the Katy Railroad as an engineer with 51 years of service. he was born on September 18, 1895 at Robie, MO, a son of Philander and Elizabeth Wood Tate. He came to Parsons from Oklahoma in 1915. Tate and Grace E. Patton were married on September 19, 1923 at Pawhuska, OK. Tate was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees. He is survived by Mrs. Tate of the home, a son, J. D. Tate of Medicine Lodge, a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn J. High of Bartlesville, Ok, a brother, Everett Tate of Bludjacket, OK and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, six sisters and a child. Grave side services will be held at 10 A.M. Tuesday at Memorial Lawn. The Rev. L. O. White will officiate. Robert Long was born about b. abt. 1590 in St. Albans, Herfordshire, England; and died 9 Jan 1663/4, age 73 in Charlestown, MA; Occupation: innkeeper; He appears to belong to the London family of innholders, and left London 7 July 1635 on the ship Defence, bringing with him a certificate signed by the minister and justice of the peace at Dunstable, Bedfordshire, listing the names and ages of his second wife, his ten children, and his servants. In 1636 he started the "Three Cranes Inn" or "Grand Ordinary" at Charlestown, which remained in his family for nearly a century. The building had been built in 1629 at the foot of town hill. It was occupied by the First Church of Charlestown and later was called the "Great House" and used as the Town Hall. It was burned down 17 June 1777, when Charlestown was set afire by British troops evacuating the city. The Long family on Nantucket, and probably other parts of the New England coast, trace back to him. Page 90 NORTH CAROLINA RECORDS On January 13, 1755 Lord Granville granted Mark Whitaker 396 acres on Abbots Creek adjoining lands of Thomas Beal (per Rowan Co. NC Deed Book III, page 106) On January 29, 1755 Lord Granville granted Mark Whitaker, a planter, four 10 shillings, 640 acres on Abbots Creek adjoining Moses TEAGUE (Rowan Co. NC deed book 3, page 152). These are the earliest Whitaker records found at this point in Rowan Co. N.C.. The area was located just south of Lexington in what is now Davidson Co. Moses Teague is Mark, Jr.'s Whitaker's first cousin. The above grants to Mark, Jr. appear to have been part of a settlement of Maryland families (friends and neighbors, who migrated to NC in the mid-1750-60s) on Granville grants in the Reedy Creek area of Rowan. Mark Whitaker, formerly of Frederick Co., MD, now of Rowan Co., NC gives Power of attorney to his friend John Cary, of Frederick Co., MD. Recorded 23 June 1767. Mark bought 298 acres on Weaver's Creek, joining Caleb Osborne and James Whitaker,12 Mar 1780 (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 29,p.444) Mark and half brother James Whiteaker lived side by side before the Revolutionary War near Peeler (also known as Weaver Creek) in what is now present day Davie Co., NC. James had land on Weavers Creek next to Mark Whiteaker on Anthony's Creek. From Weldon Whitaker,"But I have plotted out old land deeds and found that Weavers Creek is the same as present day Peelers Creek and near to the west is Anthony's Run." Vol 2 of "inhabitants of Frederick County Maryland" lists Mark Whitaker as recording a patent for "The Resurvey on Nut Spring" of 114 acres. Peden's "More Marylanders to Carolina" recites that Mark Whitaker "formerly of Frederick County, but now of Roan Co, N.C." granted power of attorney on June, l767.
