OBITUARY:
Donald Raymond Compton CASTLEWOOD, Va. Mr. Donald Raymond Compton, age 70, formerly of Rowe, Va., passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, in a Bristol Tennessee hospice house. Born Dec. 1, 1939, in Raysal, W.Va., he was a son of the late Arthur Lee and Okla Lear Hess Compton.
He had lived most of his life in the Rowe area, moving to Castlewood six years ago. A retired coal miner, he was employed by Jewell Smokeless Coal and Coke for 27 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Keene Compton; one son, Chuckie Ryan Compton; one grandson, Brady Levi Compton; and two brothers, Elden "Red" Compton and Elden Kenneth "Junebug" Compton.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Compton of the home; children, Donald Ferrel and Sharon Compton of Lebanon, Ronald Gerald Compton and Angie of Honaker, Sammy Darren Compton and Jenny of Dandridge, Tenn., Adam Coleman and Latesha of Lebanon, and Amy Marrs and Brian of Rosedale; nine grandchildren, Dustin Compton, Jordan Compton, Cody Compton, Montanna Compton, Axel Compton, Lee Compton, Kristin Compton, Tory Marrs and McKayla Marrs; three brothers, Linkous and Marie of Council, David and Magdalene of Honaker and Randy and Tonya of Rowe; four sisters, Joyce and Jay of Rowe, Joan and Roger of Drill, Geraldine "Gerri" and Bob of Fla., and Juanita and Donald of Drill; special brother-in-law, Joe Keene; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center, Wellmont Hospice House and Johnston Memorial Hospital Cancer Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rod Wicker and the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment will follow in the Hall Cemetery in Rowe, Va.
Pallbearers will be Lee Compton, Cody Compton, Dusty Compton, Dale Keene, Richard Keene, Robby Keene, Mark Meade, Jason Dye, Nick Deskins, and Scotty Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Lewis Addison, Arlen Compton, Adam Coleman, Joe Keene, Fred Shortt and Raymond Compton.

Edward Smoot Finley, Lt. Col U. S. Air force (ret) died on July 20, 2011. He was born April 6, 1916 in Alexandria, Virginia, son of Edward G. and Sibyl Smoot Finley.
A graveside service with military honors by Post #1142 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard was held Saturday, July 23, 2011at Mountlawn Memorial Park. A memorial service followed at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Benjamin Trawick officiating.
He grew up in North Wilkesboro, NC where he attended North Wilkesboro public schools. He graduated from Davidson College, class of 1937. Afterwards, he returned to North Wilkesboro where he was employed by Meadows Mill Company until being ordered to active duty with Army Air Force in June, 1941. On May 2, 1942 he married Elizabeth Stewart Heath who preceded him in death in 2008 after 66 years of marriage.
During World War II, he served in China Theater of Operation, commanding air bases in Sian, Ankang and Pai-Shi under the ultimate command of Gen Claire Chennault attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. Returning to civilian life in 1946, he was again employed by Meadows Mill Company as Secretary-Treasurer and General manager.
He served at Chairman of the North Wilkesboro Board of Education from 1957 to 1967; President of Wilkes Jaycees; North Wilkesboro Lions Club; Vice President of Wilkes Chamber of Commerce; Treasurer of Friends of the Wilkes County Library. In North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, he has served as Deacon, receiving treasurer, Elder and Clerk of Session and Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of the Board of Visitors of Davidson College and its Ne Ultra Society. He raised cattle and trees on his Brushy Mountain Farm.
He is survived by Edward S. Finley, Jr. and wife, Virginia Doughton Finley; Ann Finley Reynolds and husband, Fairfax C. Reynolds; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. | Finley, Lt. Col. Edward Smoot (I30420)

Mary B. Miller
Mary Lou Bentley Miller, 77, of Clover Church Road, Granite Falls, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at the Miller family home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Caldwell County, the daughter of the late Noah Carolina Bentley and Ellen Lydia Rupard Bentley.
Mrs. Miller was a retired employee of Shuford Mills in Granite Falls and a member of Sunrise Baptist Church in Hudson. She married James Woodrow Miller Sr. on Dec. 25, 1946, in Caldwell County. Her husband of 35 years preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1981.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her son, James W. Miller Jr., and a special friend and caregiver, Michael Lein, both of the home; two daughters, Cathy Ann Miller-Gallashaw and husband, Greg, and Marsha Ellen Miller Rezapour, both of Monroe, Ga.; a grandson, James W. (Clovis) Miller III of Hickory; and two granddaughters, Jasmine Eileen Rezapour and Parisa Lynn Rezapour, both of Charlotte. Both Mrs. Miller and her husband always made loving sacrifices for their children, for which their children will always be thankful.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Allison Bentley of Hudson and James Thomas Bentley of Granite Falls; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Bentley and Rose Belle Clark, both of Sawmills.

Thelma Athaline Niswander, of Bramwell, W.Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 10, 2009 after a long illness. Mrs. Niswander was a lifelong resident of Bramwell but had been residing with her niece and nephew, Brenda and Paul Meyer, Spring Garden Drive, Bluefield, W.Va. for the past year.
Born in Spanishburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William O. and Mary Alice Miller of Lakeworth, Fla. She was formerly an employee of the Bluefield Supply Company. She had also worked in the Trust Department of First National Bank, and as a secretary at the Social Security Administration. She was First Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and a member of the Bramwell Millionaire Garden Club. She was an active member of Elizabeth Bowen Jones Memorial Methodist Church in Bramwell where she served on a number of committees.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherrie Ann Niswander; her husband, Edward L. "Budgie" Niswander; three sisters, Helen Lucille Harris, Ruby Hazel Harris and Mabel Garleen Harris.She is survived by one sister, Frances M. Cole of Bluefield, W.Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday August 12, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Elizabeth Bowen Jones Memorial Methodist Church in Bramwell, W.Va. with the Rev. Chris Arveson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until the service hour. Following the services, burial will take place on Wednesday August 12th at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.
Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Meyer, Mike Robinson, Douglas Jones, Henry Jones, John Jones, Jim Bishop and Daniel Jones, Larry Robinette and Roger Goins. Honorary pallbearers will be Babe Niswander, Mike Robinson, Jr., Mark Robinson, Matthew Robinson, Curtis Bishop and Joe Vinciguerra.

CLINTON -- Mr. Dallas Holoman , Jr. of 213 Forest Trail Retirement Center, formerly of Raleigh, died in Sampson Regional Medical Center Tuesday June 10, 2008.
Funeral service with Masonic rites will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2008 at Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tim Register and Dr. Dalton Mayo officiating. Entombment will be beside his wife in Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
Born in Richmond, VA on May 11, 1908, Mr. Holoman was the son of the late Dallas and Edna Lockwood Holoman . His 100th birthday was celebrated with family and friends from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. He attended the Richmond Public Schools, Wake Forest College, and graduated from N.C. State College.
He married Bessie Gray Gill of Raleigh on August 15, 1930. They were happily and lovingly married for 65 years prior to her death on November 25, 1995. He worked for the New York Telephone Company and AT&T in New York City from 1929 until 1943. He began work at Boylan Pearce, a department store in Raleigh in 1943, serving in many capacities and retiring as President and General Manager when the business was sold in 1980.
He was a member of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club for 40 years, from 1943 to 1983. He was a member of a number of business organizations in Raleigh, in which he held offices and from which he received honors. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Raleigh since 1925 and had served there as Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the board of Deacons. He was an active Mason for many years. He joined Hiram Lodge No. 40, in Raleigh in 1951 and was elected an honorary member of Hiram Lodge No. 98 in Clinton in 1996. He served as Master of Hiram Lodge No. 40 in 1959. He was active in both York Rite Bodies and Scottish Rite Bodies of Raleigh and has been honored by both Bodies. He joined the Order of DeMolay in 1924 and has been a member ever since.
He is survived by two daughters, Laura Murphy and husband, Charles of Tomahawk and Carolyn Smith and husband, Mark of Sumter, SC; a brother, Kern Holoman of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Ginny Herring and husband, Burke, Bunny Paderick and husband, Rick, Patricia Horrell and husband, Greg, Stuart Smith and wife, Terry, Adrienne Young and husband, Sam and Laura Williams and husband, Tommy; 10 grandchildren, Robert Herring and wife, Jennifer, Laura Beth Herring, Carolyn Herring, Tripp Paderick, Murphy Paderick, Jason Horrell, Arran Horrell, Austin Young, Parker Young and J.D. Williams; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chreston Holoman and Boyce Holoman .
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Dallas Holoman, Sr purchased the Boylan-Pearce Department Store in the 1930\'s. The management of the store was later turned over to his four sons. Boylan-Pearce was originally located at 216 Fayetteville St. It later moved to Cameron Village where it is was the first anchor store. The Olivia Rainey library is now located there.

The following year he bought the Sheldon farm in Scarborough (Black Point) from the widow Rebecca Sheldon; the farm was sold by his heirs in 1720. He was killed by Indians in Amesbury on his way to Haverhill, 4 September 1694 with Joseph Pike.[He and Deputy Sheriff Joseph-3 Pike (1638-1694) "were slain by Indians as they traveled the head of the further end of Pond Plain..the enemy lay in a deserted house by the way, or in a clump of bushes or both."]. In his family were Kezia Warren, wife, age 60, Eunice Russel, daughter, 26, her husband killed in the late War, and her two children Rosamond, 7, and Benjamin, 5. He declared among other things to own about 60 acres of land in Shapleigh, a small hut thereon, and no barn or other building, four small steers and a cow.
