OBITUARY

McKinney Dow Lambert died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Landmark Care Center in Yakima. He was 79 years old.
Dow was born February 27, 1924 in Yakima, where he lived most of his life. The only son of McKinney Dow and Bessie (Meredith) Lambert, he endured the teasing of his three older sisters, and graduated from Yakima High School in 1941. The family moved to Seattle where Dow studied radio communications at Edison Technical School, graduating in 1942.
Dow then went to work for Pan American Airlines, and on a visit back to Edison a year later he met Lenore Cleveland, who was also studying radio. Dow and Lenore were married on March 27, 1944, after Lenore graduated, and they moved to New York where Dow continued working for Pan American.
They returned to Seattle in 1945, and after the birth of their first son, Steve, Dow joined the Merchant Marines. After completing a one-year tour of duty on the Seattle to Alaska route, Dow went to work as an announcer/technician for KTYW Radio in Yakima. He worked at KTYW for several years, during which time he and Lenore had two more sons (Mike and Dow). In 1951, he decided to switch from radio to the newly-emerging television, and took a job as a technician at KING in Seattle.
The family moved to Kennewick in 1954, where Dow went to work for KEPR TV, and then transferred to KIMA TV in Yakima in 1955. Dow worked for KIMA for 34 years, retiring in 1990 as Chief Engineer. He was considered a pioneer in the field of radio and television, designing and building systems that are in use to this day.
Dow was an avid golfer and a member and former Exalted Ruler of the Yakima Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the congregation of Englewood Christian Church, where he served on the building committee for construction of the new sanctuary in 1965, and sang in the church choir for over thirty years. Dow loved to sing, and in addition to the church choir he sang with several local choirs, including the Ambassadors, the Camerata Club, and the Yakima Symphony Choir. His other hobbies included computer programming and genealogical research.
After Lenore died in 1992, Dow's sister Eloise returned to Yakima from Seattle to live with him. They shared the house until 2002, then both moved to Sun Tower where their eldest sister, Wilma lived.
Dow was buried at Tahoma Cemetery on Thursday, July 3, 2003. A memorial service for family and friends was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Englewood Christian Church.

York, SC - Charles Thomas Vanhook, 65, of 3011 Vanhook Drive, York, SC, died Friday (September 7, 2012) at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, NC.
Charles spend the first part of his life in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He was the son of the late W.Z. Vanhook and Easter Tate Vanhook. He graduated from Powell Valley High School and from East Tennessee State University. He worked for the Virginia Division of Mined Land Reclamation. Charles had been a dedicated member, deacon and member of the choir at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap, and he was an active member in the Big Stone Gap Lion's Club.
He is survived by his son, Charles Thomas Clements (Gerri) and four grandchildren of Prior Lake, MN; sister, Linda Vanhook Carter (Conrad) of Albemarle, NC; brothers, William Z. Vanhook, Jr. (Patsy) of York, SC and Robert Joseph Vanhook (Susan) of Suffolk, VA; and a sister-in-law Ann Vanhook (wife of the late Marvin Vanhook) of Kingsport, TN.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 10, 2012 at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap, VA.
The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm on Monday in the funeral home chapel with The Rev. Mike Jones, pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, will be officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, VA.

Wilma Whitaker Stevenson
BENSON, N.C. ? Wilma Whitaker Stevenson, age 75, of Benson, N.C., formerly of Vallscreek, W.Va., passed away at her home on March 13, 2008 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Vallscreek, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Virgie Stafford Jackson, former McDowell County, W.Va. natives. She was former employee of General Instrument Corporation in Tazewell and was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge of Jacobs Fork W.Va. She had attended the Hartwell Church of God and had spent most of her life in the Vallscreek, W.Va. area.
Wilma was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dock Whitaker; her second husband, Hubert Stevenson; one sister, Virginia Altizer; two brothers, Junior and Edward Jackson.
Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Daughters: Mrs. Diane Hamilton and husband Ernie of Benson, N.C., Mrs. Crystal Carter and her husband Michael of Dunn, N.C.; sisters: Geneva Stevenson of Canebrake, W.Va., Ethel Patterson and husband, Calvin of North Tazewell, Va., Vada Norris and husband, Ray of Charleston, W.Va., Edna Carucci of Frazier, Mich.; very special niece, Margie Quesenberry; grandchildren: Caleb Carter, Misty Keene and husband, John, Dee Dee Cockrell and husband, David, Ernie Hamilton and wife, Julie, April Starling; great-grandchildren: John Garrett Keene, Madison Starling, Haven Starling, Justin Warren, Joshua Robbins, and Cody Hamilton.
Funeral services for Wilma Stevenson will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. with the Rev. Wade Quesenberry officiating. Interment will follow in Hartwell Cemetery at Hartwell, W.Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearer will be Justin Warren.

Oin R. Altizer, 68-year-old ranchman widely known for his
interest in rodeos and In fine livestock, died of a heart ailment at 1l:l5 p.m. Monday of a heart ailment in a San Antonio hospital, where he was under treatment,
Altizer ranched on Hamilton Lane' east of Del Rio, moving
there in 1947.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Doran Chapel. C.M .Day, minister of the Church of Christ, will officiate and burial will be made in Westlawn Cemetery
under the direction of the Doran Funeral Home.
Altizer was bora in Cherokee, Texas, January 13,1896. the son of Tom and Sarah Altizer. He had resided in this general area all of his life. His ranching operations
were at Juno and Spotford before he moved east of
Del Rio.
He married Stella Cauthorn in Sonora in September, 1916.
Altizer served as the arena director for local rodeos and races for many years. He worked with the 4-H Club and with
other youth groups in their annual projects and his aid was
solicited for local parades involving horses.
Survivors include his widow; Mrs. Stella Altizer; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Riggs of Dryden and Mrs. Floyd Smith of
Del Rio; a son, Jim Bob Altizer, also of Del Rio. Three sisters, five' grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces
also survive.
The grandchildren are Ada Lee and Jackie Rlggs, Mike and Sherry Altizer and Olin Smith. The sisters are Mrs. Logan Adams of Bisbee, Arizona; Mrs. Bill Cauthorn and Mrs. Eunice Sutton, both of Menard; a local nephew is Tom Taylor.
Pall bearers will be Fred Barrett, Sparks Rust Sr,, J.V. Drisdale, Ray Hutto, Hussie Galloway, Walt Wardlew, Noel
Fry and L.D. Whltehead; alternates, Pat Rose Sr. and Harold
Martin. All friends of the family are considered honorary pall bearers.

Donna Lee Christian, age 87 of Tazewell , VA passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell , VA surrounded by her loving family.
She was born August 3, 1922 at Bluefield, WV and was a daughter of the late James Frank and Mintor Byrd Shinault. Mrs. Christian was of the protestant faith and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. Her greatest joy was motherhood. She was never without a smile. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nile V. Christian; two sisters, Louise and Elsie; five brothers, Woodrow, Joe, Clarence, Andy, and Frank Shinault.

Gerald Lawson "Jerry" Duke, 69, of Damon passed away Monday, February 1, 2010 in Yoakum, Texas, while on the San Antonio Trailride.
Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 in the Palms Funeral Home Chapel with Jamie Hill officiating.
Burial will follow in Angleton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Palms.
Jerry was born September 30, 1940 in Pineville, Louisiana. He retired in 1996 from Dow Chemical after 35 years of service as a Production Foreman in Cell Feed A. After retirement Jerry stayed busy with his cattle and horses.
Jerry's love was Trailrides. He had served as Trailboss, Asst Trailboss and Director of Brazoria County Trail Riders Assoc. He was a Lifetime Member of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Brazoria County Fair Assoc., and was a member of the Houston Livestock Show's Mule Show Committee.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John A. Duke Sr., Mary Ruth Tipton and Julian "Jake" Willis and brother, John A. "Buddy" Duke Jr.
Survivors include his daughters, Patricia Mager and husband, Mark, of Danbury and Sherri Carey and Mike Jones of Lake Jackson, and their mother; Patty Duke Jones of Clute; grandaughters, Mindy, Macy and Mikayla Mager, Traci Mann and Kenna Carey; sisters, Johnnie McDearmont and husband, Thomas, of Arlington and Marjorie Eernisse and husband, Roger, of Arcadia; brother, Randy Willis of Austin and 15 nieces and nephews.

Bay Minette, Ala.?Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Norris funeral Home on April 28 for Marion Dorsey Drinkard, 80, with the Rev. Joey Savell and the Rev. Hunter Hall officiating. Interment followed at Bay Minette Cemetery.
Drinkard, a lifelong resident of Bay Minette, died at Daphne on April 27.
He is survived by his wife, Venia (Long) Drinkard, Bay Minette; one daughter, Margaret Harbison, Bay Minette; two sons, Everette Drinkard and Alex (Tiny) Drinkard, both of Bay Minette; three brothers, Harvel Drinkard, A.C. Drinkard, Clyce Drinkard, all of Fulton, Ala.; two sisters, Lucy Bell Hepstall and Anna Lee Gregory, both of fulton, Ala.; thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

When the death summons came to Mr Chas. A. Minnich, our popular and efficient post master, on the night of October 26th 1911, a heavy and long lingering gloom fell upon this quiet village. Two remarkable circumstances are connected with the life of this good man; one that he never wore glasses, and the other that he died in the room in which he was born, passing away suddenly but serenely after almost reaching his eighty fifth year.
His living representatives are two sons and two daughters Messrs Joe and Sam Minnich of Roanoke. Mrs Mollie Marks of
the same city and the wife of A. W. Hammond (authors note, this is Sarah E. Minnich) of Amsterdam. He is also survived by an accomplished and universally esteemed widow, whose ministration of kindness to her aged husband no doubt
prolonged his useful life.
Mr. Minnich was a staunch Presbyterian and the only member of that church residing in this place at the time of his death, but his funeral sermon was appropriately preached by the Methodist minister of Cloverdale Rev. R. K. Nevitt, a much appreciated friend of the Minnich family.
His last surviving sister Mrs Virginia Wingo of Newport News VA had recently visited him and when the parting hour came, both brother and sister were moved to tears and expressed unwonted regret at the inevitable separation. Were those feelings prophetic of what so soon awaited them.
It is needless for this writer to expatiate on the virtues of the deceased as they are generally well known to the readers of the Herald. His character was like that of Caesars wife "above suspicion and above reproach" and although he had temporarily resided in other places, one of them as far off as Florida, his good qualities were everywhere discovered and of course favorable descanted upon.
Two brothers whose homes are now in the west had visited within the past few years and as it was apparent to all that "Charley" was becoming infirm they realized that perhaps this was their last earthly meeting.
The life of a pure minded man has closed, we have lost a useful citizen and humble christian, but his memory will live long in the hearts of those who knew him.
Several members of the Minnich and Hedrick families of Fincastle attended the funeral of Mr. C A. Minnich. His four children were also present.

Mary Edwina Leeson, 85, passed away May 8, 2003, in Pikes Peak Hospice. Mary was born on Sept. 3, 1917, in Birmingham, Ala., to Thomas Unrath and Edna Gertrude DiGamco.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Leeson; grandson, Jeffery Coke; and sister, Yola Sandoval.
She is survived by her children, James (Kathy) Coke and Patsy (Jerry) Wright; grandchildren, Wendy J. Jacobs, Cindy L. (John) Trent, Allan T. (Wendy) Coke, Gail (Rich) Pecoraro and Gene Wright; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Scott Jacobs, Jamie, T.J. and Chris Trent, Patrick, Jessica and Katie Coke, Alyssa Pecoraro; and other relatives and friends.
Mary will always be remembered for her love of the Bible, praying with her constant prayer list, and joy of singing and playing the piano. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Rev. Howard and Betty Baker for the many years of friendship and care given to Mary.

TUSCALOOSA William R. "Bill" Gresham, age 63, of Tuscaloosa, departed for his heavenly home Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at DCH Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Deacon Roland Ficken officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Martha Gresham.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Julie; stepson, Tim Jones; stepdaughter, Lynne Ellington (Roger); sister, Patricia Bleicher; brothers, James Gresham (Dee) and Tom Gresham (Karen); other relatives, Beth Bleicher Hansom (Paul), David Bleicher (Donna), Scott Gresham, Jared Gresham, and his namesake Jonah William Gresham; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins on the Yow and Gresham side of the family.
A 1966 graduate of Tuscaloosa High School, Bill proudly served his country in Vietnam aboard the USS Robert Craig and the USS Albert David. Upon his return, he graduated from the University of Alabama. Before illness forced his retirement, he worked for Sealy Maintenance for many years.
Bill loved fishing, Alabama football, cooking, and any project involving power tools. Helping others was his ministry, and this often took the form of homemade bread, cookies, and Eggplant Gresham.
Pallbearers will be Tim Jones, Roger Ellington, Emmett Ray, Jared Gresham, David Thomas, Robert Peterson, Scott Gresham, and David Bleicher.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Christopher Jordan, Dr. Melanie Graham, and the entire staff at the DCH Cancer Center; the staff of Randall-Reilly Publishing Company; Sealy Realty; and Dr. Michael McCracken.
The family also wants to recognize all those who offered their prayers and assistance as Bill arduously fought his courageous battle with cancer. We also want to thank Dr. Phillip Bobo as well as all Bill's friends at the clubhouse on River Road.

William "Bill" Andrew Sanford, 70, of Charles City, VA, formerly of Petersburg, passed away Friday, March 27, 2015.
He attended Petersburg High School and graduated in 1963.
His father, James Sanford, was also a plumber. He loved and adored his mother Louise.
Billy owned Sanford Mechanical which provided services to ICI (now DuPont) for more than 20 years where his friend of 40 years, Danny Wiggins, worked by his side. While at ICI, Billy developed a close friendship with Frank and his wife Odelia. This 40 year friendship included annual fellowship over Thanksgiving dinners and enjoying Frank's famous Brunswick stew.
Billy was a thinker who loved to design and fabricate the part(s) needed to repair or improve any situation. He was a perfectionist who took pride in his completed work. He loved gadgets and even after retirement, Billy helped his brother Cliff and nephew Jimmy with some of their projects in their mechanical business. The three of them had a strong bond of being there for each other as often as they could. Bill cared deeply for his brother and had great respect and admiration for his nephew. Karen has often said that Bill felt like Jimmy was more like a son to him than a nephew.
Billy probably completed more on his bucket list than most of us ever will. He enjoyed a 2-week trip with his brother who piloted a small plane. They visited several small Bahamian islands. He's had numerous boats of all shapes, sizes and power. He spent much of his life on the ocean or on the James River. Upon his return, if he didn't have fish, he had a story. Many of the fishing stories included JJ. We'll just say they had many boating ?adventures.? One of Billy's fishing dreams came true when he traveled to Costa Rica with a long-time friend, Donnie Burton. Billy, JJ, Cliff, Donnie, and nephew Jimmy enjoyed fishing adventures in the Keys and Bahamas as well.
Billy loved riding his motorcycle and rode as far as Miami to Maine where his sister Bettie lives. Billy enjoyed local riding with his pastor but only if he could ride in front of him due to Randy's Harley being so loud that it would drown out Billy's music. He also shared a very special relationship with his nephew, Gary, that included many motorcycle rides together and his niece, Elizabeth, who was very active in his life.
Racing was Billy's second passion after fishing. He was a racing fan and enjoyed the thrill of watching his nephew, "Little Dave" race a dragster. Billy frequently rode his motorcycle to the races at Southside Speedway and Langley. He befriended Michael (a police officer), Michael's girlfriend and father; they enjoyed sitting together at weekly races.
However, what Billy loved more than anything is Karen, his wife of 31 years. His last conversation with Karen this past week included "I may not have done everything right, but I always tried to do my best." Billy and Karen started every morning with a cup of coffee sitting side by side discussing the needs of the day or just silently being together. They supported each other throughout all of their responsibilities and shared the joys of the fruits of their labor. They spent many years enjoying their cottage at Boiling Springs Lake that Billy and JJ built. They looked forward to little things like snorkeling or sitting on the beach sharing fresh conch salad prepared by a Bahamian they befriended 20 years ago. Billy knew in his heart that Karen is committed to caring for her elderly mother, Judy. Billy devoted much of his time willingly and lovingly helping Karen with errands such as doctor and hair appointments for Judy. Billy had the true spirit of a loving husband doing all he could to make Karen's life secure and happy. They mutually shared their devotion for Blossom Mae their 13 year old puppy, often calling each other when apart and "speaking" to Blossom over the phone.
Karen and Bill had 31 years of annual holiday celebrations with family and friends. For years they had an annual Halloween party for his grandson and 5 nieces and nephews. They loved sharing in the joys of birthday parties, attending the circus and other events with their 4 nieces and continuing the tradition with their 4 young grandnieces, nephew and granddaughter. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners will have a missing place setting, but there will be fun memories of Bill's love of food that include roasted oysters, JJ's barbeque, seafood, wings and again, Frank's famous stew.
Although Karen and Billy never had children of their own, they shared their love for Billy's daughter Stephanie and granddaughter Lulu. He was proud of Stephanie's work as a physical therapist assistant. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and Billy and Stephanie had a father/daughter bond of love, care and humor. Stephanie's eyes light up as she shares some stories of her dad's mischievous and teasing ways. He was so proud to participate in his later years with Lulu's spiritual growth and interest in the church and church camp.
Billy had a strong faith in the Lord and built a stronger faith over the last ten years as a member of Christ Community Church. Billy loved attending church and the fellowship socials. What he enjoyed most was the annual Iron Sharpens Iron men's fellowship retreat. Billy helped many people by contributing his plumbing, carpentry, and mechanic skills on mission trips with the church.
Billy's love for God, family, friends, and community made Billy whole. I believe what Karen said is true when some of her last words to him were that she would be there when he took his last breath and at that same time he would be with God.
Pain, sickness, suffering are hard to understand and leave so many of us asking why. Faith, love, hope are fruits of the spirit and this is what Billy believed until his last breath. Farewell William, Bill, Uncle Billy, Billy Sanford- The Plumber.
William is survived by his wife of 31 years Karen Sanford; a daughter Stephanie Thompson; a granddaughter Mallory Thompson; a brother Clifton Sanford; a sister Bettie Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas Traynham Stillman, 82, died suddenly December 31, 2003, in Lancaster, SC. Mr. Stillman, a resident of Chilhowie, VA, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, was retired from the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4667, and was a member of the Chilhowie United Methodist Church.
Mr. Stillman was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Margaret Martin Stillman of Petersburg; his parents, Arthur Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Traynham Stillman of South Boston and Hopewell; and brothers Arthur Raymond Stillman, Jr., of Hopewell and John Hammond Stillman of South Boston.
He is survived by his wife, Pansy Rollins Stillman, of Chilhowie, VA; sisters Frances Stillman Lee, of Hopewell and Mary Stillman Kirby of Daleville, VA; daughters Margaret Stillman Ford and her husband Richard of Aiken, SC, and Paige Stillman Houchins and her husband Luther, of Chilhowie; two grandchildren, Thomas Carlson Ford of Boston, MA, and Rachel Annette Houchins of Johnson City, TN, and a stepson, Thomas E. Anna McGlothlin Stewart, age 64, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018 in a Parkersburg, West Virginia rehabilitation center.
She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of Frances Whittaker McGlothlin of Abingdon, Virginia and the late Branche McGlothlin.
She was a former teacher at Little Champions Academy in Raven, Virginia. She graduated from Richlands High School Class of 1972 and was a graduate of Pensacola Bible College in Pensacola, Florida. After her graduation from Bible College, she moved to Warrenton, Missouri where she did extensive training for child evangelism. She had worked in different capacities for numerous churches and was the former owner and operator of the Fisherman?s Net in Doran, Virginia and Heaven Bound in Tazewell, Virginia. She was attending the Parkersburg Assembly of God in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Stewart and one infant daughter, Lydia Stewart.

He was born in Madison, Texas, and was a son of Mrs. Thelma
Jefferies Stewart of Crockett, Texas, and the late Mr. Dunk
Wendell Stewart. He was a 1970 graduate of Latexo High School, Latexo, Texas, and was a child care worker for Freewill Baptist Family Ministries in Greeneville. He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area for 13 years before moving to Greeneville two years ago and was a member of the Bethel Assembly Church of Richlands.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lydia Ann Stewart; and two sisters, Dale Crowson and Carolyn Graffe. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, Mrs. Anna McGlothlin Stewart; two daughters, Rebekah Stewart and Emily Stewart both of the home; two sons, Brian Stewart and Darren Stewart both of Latexo; three sisters, Mrs. Joyce Raines and JoAnn Finley, both of Latexo, and Mrs. Elaine Erwin of Crockett, Texas; three brothers, Norman Gibson of Texas, Mr. Billy Gibson of

KINGSPORT Thelma "Granny" Minton, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at her home.
Mrs. Minton was born on Feb. 11, 1918, in Russell County, Va., to the late Arthur and Ethel Kiser Rasnake. She was of the Baptist faith. Thelma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and will be missed by all that knew her. "Granny" loved her family dearly. She also loved to quilt.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Minton was preceded in death by husband, Nathan M. Minton; one daughter, Edna Belcher; four stepdaughters, Lucy Hinkle, Lena Harmon, Lassie Ray and Trula Frye; five stepsons, Guy, Arthur, Clarence, Lee and Howard Minton; one sister, Roma Rasnake; and five brothers, Scott, Remire, Tives, Lee and Jim Rasnake.

LEBANON, Va. ? The Rev. Carlyle Carter went to be with the Lord on July 29, 2009. He believed I Corinthians 15:22, \"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.\"
The Rev. Carter was born on April 23, 1929. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myra Floe Carter; his father, Claude Carter; and his sister, Peggy Griffith. He is survived by his mother, Gladys Carter; three daughters, Barbara Snead and husband Larry of Lebanon, Sue Rasnake and husband Ron of Lynchburg and Karen Chafin of Portsmouth; three beloved grandchildren, Christopher Snead and wife Cameron of Lebanon, Jarrod Rasnake of Charlottesville and Marissa Snead of Lebanon; a sister, Maxine Lawson of Ohio; a brother, Bill Carter and wife Betty of Dante; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Carter was a past employee of the Pittston Coal Co. and retired after 43 years. He was the pastor of several small churches over the years and remained pastor of Cedar Baptist Church of Lebanon for 32 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a paratrooper.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Edwards and the Rev. Charlie Harrison Sr. officiating. Entombment will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with military rites conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post No. 9864.
Those attending are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10 a.m. to go in procession to the mausoleum. The family will receive family and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, prior to the service at the funeral home or any time at the Rev. Carter\'s home.

Linda Sue Reed Galyean, 72, of Lynchburg, died on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. She was the wife of Jerry Galyean for 55 years. Born Sunday, March 29, 1942, in Rogersville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Warren Reed and Sarah Tate Reed.
She was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church. She lived her life as a good Christian, giving and caring for others. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Gay Galyean Thornsbury and husband, David, of Boonville, N.C., and Dr. Teresa A Galyean and husband, Byron Stanbery, of Hillsville; grandchildren, Amanda P. Stanbery of Charlotte, N.C., and Cullen W. Stanbery of Hillsville; two brothers, Richard Reed and John \"Al\" Reed, both of Lynchburg; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Pickett of Bluefield, W.Va., Joan Tolley of Pamplin; a brother-in-law, Andrew \"Buddy\" Galyean of Henry; devoted nieces, Kim and Katie Collurafici of Pamplin; a special friend, \"the other Linda\" Caplinger; and a host of nieces and nephews. Born in Surgoinsville, TN, August 14, 1938, he was a son of the late Sarah Tate Reed and Warren W. Reed. He was a retired salesman with Kroger, John P. Hughes and Graceland of Lynchburg.

MIAMI, FLORIDA - Jimmy Joe "J.J." Whitaker, 75, of Dante, Virginia, the firstborn of Ralph Lawrence and Oma Lee (Leedy) Whitaker, passed away on Sunday, January 19th, 2020 in Miami, Florida after a four-year battle with cancer.
Educated at Castlewood High School and Miami Dade College. However, his wisdom and knowledge extended far beyond his formal education. He served in the US Army. In his youth, he worked in car repair and welding. As an adult, he excelled in banking and finance and went on to be a very successful executive for the Exposition Corporation where he managed home shows in the Miami, Florida area. Jim later went on to open his own exposition company and started a successful window and door business.
Jim had many interests including breeding, raising, and training champion German Shepards. He enjoyed computers, building, and remodeling. However, Jim is best known for his enthusiasm for car racing and classic cars. He designed and built race cars that ran in the Hooters Cup, at Hialeah Speedway, and tracks all over the Southern states. Later in life he bought and modified classic cars. He won awards for his 1935 Chrysler PT convertible and displayed them with pride. He loved attending car shows with his family where he made many friends. Jim?s father once said that ?Jim never met a stranger?.
Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. He loved and was loved by animals and children wherever he went. He could best be described as a dreamer, a fighter, a master communicator, and a man who always stood out in a crowd. He had a million stories which he told with such animation that you felt you were there. He captured every room he entered and made everyone laugh. Jim?s sense of humor and contagious laughter lifted spirits in all those that knew him. Jim could never be described as ordinary because he strived for and achieved exceptionalism in everything he did.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Linda Lee (Austin) Whitaker. His six children Jimmy Joe Whitaker Jr. of Georgia, Angela Becker and her husband Ken of South Carolina, Kimberly Reckles and her husband Andrew of Georgia, Scott Whitaker and his wife Monica of Georgia, Jennifer Lesek and her husband Joe of Florida, Bonnie Vedo and her husband Nick of Florida. His eleven grandchildren Amber Weber, Clayton Reckles, Natalie Whitaker, Terah Reckles, Elisa Whitaker, Alexandra Fletcher, Paige Fletcher, Bianca Partlow, Savannah Fletcher, Aniyah Whitaker, Levi Lesek, thirteen great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters Linda Cordle and Pauline Hart, and her husband Greg; aunts Betty Lou Savage, Beatrice Taylor, Joan Austin, and his uncle Boyce Whitaker, and joins his late brother Sammy Whitaker and parents mentioned above.
Jim loved being a Whitaker and was proud of his family history and instilled that in his children. He enjoyed attending the annual Whitaker reunion and catching up with his cousins and other family members. His passing leaves a huge void in our family and he will be dearly missed.

Norman L. Harter, 78, of Auburn, formerly of Avilla, passed away at 6:54 a.m. on July 11, 2017 at Auburn Village Nursing Home.
He was born to James and Ethel (Kelly) Harter on July 22, 1938 in Noble County. He spent his formative years in La Otto.
Norman was married to Joanne Whittaker and the couple lived in La Otto until moving to Avilla in 1986.
He retired from Allen County Power Plant
Norman is survived by a son, James Harter of Auburn; three great nieces, Kristy (John) Butcher of Auburn, Kassy Rollins of Garrett, and Kory (Michael) Sherrill of Manchester, TN; 13 great great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded by a son Norman Wayne Harter; two daughters Kathy Jo and Norma Jo Harter; a brother Donald E. Harter; a nephew, Thomas E. Harter.

Eldon Emerson Campbell, 90, of Front Royal, VA died Tuesday, August 31, at Greenfield Senior Living in Strasburg, VA.
Eldon was born October 4, 1919 in Dunmore, WV, the son of Luther Russell and Onie Thompson Campbell.
Eldon is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Stuart R. and Lisa (Myers) Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC and David E. and Lori (Shuman) Campbell of Cary, NC., his daughter and son-in-law V. Kate and Richard \"Rick\" Sowers of Toms Brook, VA; his grandchildren Megan and Allison Sowers of Strasburg, VA, Ethan Sowers of Toms Brook, VA and Bryan and Matthew Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC; a sister Marilee (Campbell) Cyrus of S. Charleston, WV; a sister-in-law Valerie Bain of Canada; brothers-in-law David (Ellen) Stewart Tate of Check, VA; Jim Bain of Canada and their families; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Helen (Tate) Campbell; his brother-in-law Clarence H. \"Cy\" Cyrus; and his niece Ann L. Cyrus.
Eldon graduated from Greenbank High School in 1936. He attended Tri State University in Indiana from 1940-43, and 1947 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Eldon served in the Armed Forces beginning in the U.S. Navy from 1936-1940, assigned to the USS Louisville. He then went into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942-1946, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 1943. He joined the Air Force Reserves in 1946 and served as Commander of many squadrons then retired in 1973 as a Colonel. He was a Veteran of World War II.
Eldon worked at Pet Milk Co., from 1947-53, where he was Plant Engineer. He joined the American Viscose Corp. in Front Royal, VA in 1953 as a Staff Engineer, resigned, and joined General Electric Co. in Waynesboro, VA in 1956 as an Aircraft Control Project Engineer. He returned to American Viscose Corp. in 1958 as Projects and Crafts Engineer, and in 1960 was promoted to Plant Engineer. FMC Corp. bought American Viscose in 1963, and he was promoted to Plant Manager in 1966. He transferred to Nitro, WV in 1973 as their Plant Manager. In 1976 Avtex Fibers bought the FMC-American Viscose Division and he was promoted to Vice President of Rayon Manufacturing responsible for the Front Royal, VA; Nitro, WV; and Aston, PA plants. He moved back to Front Royal in 1977 and retired from Avtex in 1984. In 1985 he formed Eldon E. Campbell, Inc. as a consultant. His Professional Memberships include the Va. Manufacturing Assoc.-Board of Directors; WV Manufacturing Assoc.-Board of Directors; American Institute of Electrical Engineers; and Northern Va. Manufacturing Assoc.
Eldon joined the Front Royal Rotary Club in 1964, is a Paul Harris Fellow, served as President from 1972-73, and served on many committees. He served in Boy Scouts of America as District Chairperson in Shenrapawa Dist., Board of Directors of Shenandoah Council of VA, and Board of Directors Buckskin Council, WV. Past President and Board of Directors for the Warren Heritage Society; President of the Warren County Sesquicentennial committee in 1986; Chamber of Commerce; Front Royal/Warren Co. United Way; Lung Association; Red Cross; acting Director of Industrial Development Authority in 1994; Member and Chairman of Front Royal/Warren County Airport Commission. Eldon also served on James Madison Univ., Shenandoah Univ., and Lord Fairfax Community College curriculum advisory committees. He served on the Board of Directors for Tri-County OIC, Inc.; was a member of Greenville, TN Rescue Squad; Red Cross instructor; Greenville Lions Club member; and a Mason for over 50 years. Served on Board of Directors, and was Vice-president and Budget Chairman for the Greater Charleston, WV Area United Way.

Patricia Ruth Whitaker passed away after a long illness on 2/11/2019. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Ray Whitaker who passed in 1973.
She was born on April 20th, 1932 and is survived by one sister, Dicye Faye, two sons, Denver and Terry, their wives, Andrea and Elaine, a special niece, Amanda, and five grandchildren.
Patricia was a homemaker until the passing of her husband. Following that time she worked as a maid at The Greenbrier Hotel for 16 years. She had a mischievous sense of humor, loved to cook, can fruits and jams, and give jars of her home-made apple butter to her neighbors and family. She tended her flowers and garden, and enjoyed the companionship of her beloved cocker spaniel, Bo. Patricia will be greatly missed.

Stephen Place, 76 of Bristol, Connecticut passed away after a four-year battle with cancer on May 12th, 2024.
A thoughtful and caring husband to his wife Paula of 37 years and a loving father to his daughters Anna and Deborah, Stephen was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1948 and grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts. He graduated Arlington High School in 1966, afterwards serving in the United States Air Force from 1968-1972, then graduating from UMass Amherst in 1975.
He was passionate about his work at the American Radio Relay League Headquarters, where he met his beloved spouse. He continued to work at several other companies, making friends wherever he went, retiring from Doncasters in 2014.
A true Christian gentleman, he was an active member of Grace Baptist Church for many years, devoting his time to teaching Sunday School and Pioneer Club, as well as serving on numerous committees. One of his proudest moments was attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in 1963.
In addition to being a devoted Boston sports fan, he enjoyed an array of other hobbies throughout his life, including reading, fishing, a deep appreciation of classical guitar music, and being the proud originator of many dad jokes.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Dorothy (Alsen) Place. He is survived by his wife, Paula; daughter Anna Matney and her husband Christofer; daughter Deborah Place; brother Karl William Place and his wife Mary, and nephews Brandon and Jonathan Place.

William Alexander Duke, Jr. arrived at his heavenly home on November 15, 2022. Bill was a devoted husband, loving father, math teacher extraordinaire, volunteer fire fighter, and disability rights consultant/advocate.
He was born in Richmond, VA to Elizabeth Russell Duke and William Alexander Duke, Sr. He was a life-long resident of Caroline County, leaving it to graduate from Virginia Tech. He spent over 20 years with the Caroline County school system, and then became a nationally-recognized authority on the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Bill had a gift for teaching. Using his quirky sense of humor, outlandish puns, corny jokes and shaggy dog stories, he made algebra, geometry, and physics entertaining.
He was a founding member of Upper Caroline Volunteer Fire Department and treasurer for over 30 years. While he liked the excitement of fire fighting, he loved cooking for the chicken barbecues and helping with the pork barbecues for Ladysmith Rescue Squad. It was another outlet for his sense of humor.
Bill was a life-long member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was the third generation to sing in the choir. He was active in a number of ways, but declined to teach Sunday School. His father had held that role until his death, and Bill felt strongly he wasn?t meant to fill his father?s shoes in that role.
Cherishing his memory are his wife, Cheryl, son William Paul, daughter Caitlin, and close cousins Ted Russell, Jean Hahn, Nancy Grand, Beth Hensley, Marti Hurlbert, and Bill Van Name. His parents, Elizabeth and William Duke preceded him in death.
Visitation will take place on November 22, 5-7 PM at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, VA. Funeral Services will be November 23 at 2 PM in the Caroline County Community Center auditorium, Bowling Green. He will be interred at Lakewood Cemetery in Bowling Green.

Mary "Alice" Christian, 77, of Piqua died at 3:19 a.m. Oct. 4, 2009, at her daughters residence from lung cancer.
She was born in Pelham, Ga. on July 2, 1932 to the late John and Carrie (Johnson) Tyler. On Aug. 2, 1969 she married Charles E. Christian in Sidney and he preceded her in death on March 30, 2004.
Alice is survived by three sons and four daughters, Charlie R. Christian and Mitchell Gross of Columbus, Robert A. and Maxine Christian of Wapakoneta, James A. Christian of Wapakoneta, Jan Maloy of Piqua, Deborah and Allen Cantwil of Piqua, Georgia and Larry Smith of Florida and Wilma Armer of Wapakoneta; one brother, Charles Tyler of Warner Robbins, Ga.; two sisters, Helen Windham of Piqua and Evelyn Schwartz of Ft. OBITUARY

COALWOOD ? Frederick G. "Grandad" Beavers, age 83, of Coalwood, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born April 16, 1928 in Caretta, he was the son of the late James and Hazel Hunt Beavers.
He retired from Olga Coal Company after 40 years. He was a member of the Berwind Masonic Lodge #141. He enjoyed working in his work shop and giving unofficial "Rocket Boys" tours of Coalwood to tourist.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia E. (Jenny) Smith Beavers; three daughters, Mrs. Roger (Vickie) Gilman of Coalwood, Ms. Terri Sokolow of Bristol, Va. and Ms. Toni Robbins of Coalwood; six grandchildren, Tara Helton and Ashley Gilman, both of Huntington, W.Va., Tasha Foy of Bristol, Va., Joshua Sokolow of Madrid, Spain and Jeremy and Jacob Robbins, both of Huntington, W.Va.; and seven great-grandchildren, Ryan and Haley Helton, Oliver and Lucy-Claire Foy and Levi and Dylan Followay and Sophie Robbins; one sister, Margie B. Jones of Chesterfield, Va.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the Coalwood United Methodist Church in Coalwood from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the church on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Joe Moore officiating, and there will be no interment.
The family will receive friends at the home following the service.

Harry E. Lake, Sr.
November 19, 1937-January 4, 2015
Mr. Harry E. Lake, Sr., 77, of La Porte, Indiana, died Sunday January 4, 2015 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital.
He was born November 19, 1937 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Harry Lake and Carlotta (Cottrell) Lake.
Harry worked as a machinist for twenty-five years at Allis Chalmers. He was a veteran of the US Army. Harry loved to play cards, telling jokes, and gambling. He also enjoyed watching the Cubs, and Chicago Bears. He was a very sociable person. Harry especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.
He is survived by his son, Harry (Kate) Lake, Jr. of Michigan City, IN; two daughters, Melissa (Mike) Krueger of Michigan City, IN, Tina (Greg) Swan of Mishawaka, IN; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Dale Lake of La Porte, IN, Tom Lake of CO; many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, son, Stephen Lake, brother, Jim Lake, half-sister, Margaret Morrissoe, and half-brother, Don Shelley.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 1:00 pm, until time of service. A Memorial Service will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Saturday January 10, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Cremation will take place. A Military Service will be conducted by the LaPorte American Legion Post #83 and the LaPorte V.F.W.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Donor's Choice.

Rodney Dare Collins, age 60, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of Lillian Beavers Collins of Cedar Bluff, Virginia and the late James A. Collins, Jr. He was a 1971 graduate of Richlands High School. Rodney worked for several years as a telephone technician in the area. He was always known for wearing his black cowboy hat. Rodney was a member of the Richlands Fire Department and a member of the Crossroads Community Church in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. He was a lifelong resident of the area. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Marie Collins.

Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm ? 9:00 pm on Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Billy Carl Honaker, 69, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, died July 23 in a Salem, Va., Veterans Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Hartwell, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lon B. and Thelma Lockhart Honaker, both McDowell County natives.
He had made his home in the Baptist Valley area most of his life and was the co-owner of Blue Grass Machinery in North Tazewell until 2000. He was a member of the Yost Chapel Church in Baptist Valley and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School Class of 1957. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Ann Nadine Honaker; one sister, Betty Slaughter; one grandson, Samuel Ein Altizer; and one granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Altizer.
Survivors: wife, Hattie Waddell Honaker; daughters, Diane Altizer and husband, Sam, Jr., of Baptist Valley, Teresa Bracken and husband, Paul, of Parma, Ohio; sister, Brenda Poskas and husband, Leon, of Pulaski; brother, Edward Honaker and wife, Fern, of Troutville; granddaughters, Sarah Bracken and Katlyn Bracken; step granddaughter, Tiffany Bracken; and step great grandson, Angel Colon; and special caregivers, Chores & Errands Ambulance Service, Dr. In Young Park and Staff at the Richlands Dialysis Center.
The funeral was conducted July 26 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Charles Patterson officiating.
Interment followed at the Bandy Family Cemetery in Baptist Valley. Members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 conducted military graveside rites.
