23501	OBITUARY The News Virginian; 1-2 June 2011. Charles Sloan "Chuck" Patton III, 75, of Waynesboro, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at home. He was born on May 5, 1936, in Watertown, New York, the son of the late Charles Sloan Patton, Jr. and Frances (Starbuck) Patton. Chuck was a man of great faith, he loved the Lord Jesus Christ and he was an active member of Cornerstone Church of Augusta. His life reflected serving the Lord and others, he spent many years in ministry at local nursing homes, and various other ministries and his life influenced many people. Chuck retired from Hopeman Brothers as a designer and he enjoyed spending time with family, friends and involving himself in "projects". He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, of 44 years, Jean Bailes Patton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a twin sister, Frances Davis and her husband, Curtis, of Roanoke, Virginia; four sons, Charles Sloan "Chip" Patton IV and his wife, Cheryl, of Burlington, Vermont, Michael Randall "Mike" Patton and his wife, Cindy, of Arlington, Virginia, James Randall "Randy" Fox and his wife, Lynn, of Keswick, Virginia, and Gregory Allen "Greg" Fox and his wife, Robbye, of Olney, Maryland; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Cornerstone Church of Augusta, 1156 Tinkling Spring Road, Staunton, with Pastor Greg Mayo and Pastor Whitney Critzer officiating. 23502	OBITUARY The News Virginian; 16 September 2010 Spicy "Bette" W. Reid, 83, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Jerry Bledsoe and Lillian Tomlin Wade. Spicy was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Reid; a brother, Jerry Wade; and five sisters, Helen Wilson, Velma Davis, Jean Welch, Ora June Benton, and Amelia Ann Bowden. She is survived by two sons, David A. Ross and John W. Ross; three daughters, Susan R. Walker, Karen R. Bartelme and Joan C. Sutton. She is also survived by three stepchildren, Gary A. Reid, Kenneth L. Reid and Brenda S. Jones. She leaves eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Spicy enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, quilting, tatting, and all crafts. She loved to play cards. A graveside service will be held at Augusta Memorial Park, 1 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010, officiated by Dr. Glen A. Holman. She was born February 21, 1928, in Beckley, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Lacy Kyle Petrey and Nellie Marie Foster Petrey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hamilton Mack Eakin; a sister, Katherine Withrow; and a brother, Lacy Petrey. 23507	OBITUARY The News-Gazette; Lexington, VA; 10 March 1971 D. E. BRADY, FORMER COUNTY/OFFICIAL, DIED AT AGE 87. Douglas Ellinipsico Brady, 87, former member of the County Board of supervisors and for many years county surveyor, died Saturday in Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility. The son of Charles A. Brady and Marie Townsend Brady, he was born May 16, 1883 at Point Pleasant, W. Virginia, where his father, a civil engineer, was working on a railroad bridge across the Ohio River. The Brady's were living at the time in a house called "Ellinipsico", which stood on the site where the Indian Chief Cornstalk and his son Ellinipsico, had been massacred. Thus, the unusual Indian name became associated with the Brady family. Several years later the family returned to "Mount Pleasant" their property at Buffalo Forge. On Jan. 1, 1916 D. E. Brady was appointed county surveyor, a post his father had also held. The elder Brady, as surveyor had helped lay out the "boom" town of Glasgow, which had extended, on paper, from Greenlee to the present site of Lone Jack Quarry. The records accumulated through the years from surveying of the father and son touched on almost every piece of property in Rockbridge County. D. E. Brady retired as county surveyor February. 9, 1948. Mr. Brady was elected to the Board of Supervisors from Natural Bridge District in 1947. He served two terms on the governing body from 1948 to 1956. Prior to his service on the Supervisors, he was deputy commissioner of revenue for Natural Bridge District from 1939 to 1948. He also served for a number of years as road commissioner for Natural Bridge District. He had been an elder in Falling Spring Presbyterian Church. Always interested in new developments and processes, he was one of the organizers and a director of the Farmers' Exchange, which began as a cooperative for buying fertilizer. He was also in the group that formed the Natural Bridge Telephone Company. He was among the first farmers here to try alfalfa, owned one of the first radio sets in Rockbridge County and installed his own electrical system at Mount Pleasant some years before electric lines were extended throughout the county. For several generations the Brady name has been associated with Mount Pleasant, one of the most unusual and historic places in the county. It was the home of William Weaver, who operated extensive iron works there at Buffalo Forge. Following the death of his wife, William Weaver asked his niece, who was married to Daniel C. E. Brady, to come from Philadelphia and live at Mount Pleasant. Daniel Brady, who was the grandfather of D. E. Brady, continued the iron business and the property has since been in the Brady family. D. E. Brady was married in 1910 to Miss. Mary Thompson of Rockbridge, who survives him. Other survivors include two sons, Douglas E. Brady, Jr. of Lexington and Tate T. 23508	OBITUARY The News-Press; 13-15 Dec. 2013 MARIE RUTLEDGE SHERRICK December 9, 2013 Marie Rutledge Sherrick, 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9th, at Angel Works of Cape Coral, FL. She was the last surviving child of Lee County pioneers James and Martha Rutledge. Marie was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Paul Sherrick, a long-time local merchant. She was a member and active supporter of the First Assembly of God Church. She is survived by three children: Elaine Carson (Larry) of Jacksonville, FL, Jake Sherrick (Janice) of Tampa, FL and Gail Fous (Gregg) of Ft Myers as well as her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 23510	OBITUARY The Palladium-Item, Richmond, IN Stanley W. Beeson RALEIGH, Ind. -- Stanley W. Beeson, age 73, departed this world for a better place Saturday, March 18, 2006. He had spent 20 years in Raleigh after a short time in New York and then Connecticut in the early 1980s. He was formerly from Richmond, Ind., and Greenville, Ohio. Stanley was born in Cambridge City, Ind., on May 14, 1932, son of the late Vernon Mason and Elizabeth Arleen. He grew up in Richmond and on the family farm near Cambridge City. Stanley graduated from Richmond High School in 1951. While serving in the Navy Reserves, he married his high school sweetheart, Naomi Carolyn Miller in 1953, who predeceases him. He was many things to many people in all his years, from working the family farm in his young years to building his own home in Greenville, Ohio, with his father, becoming vice president of systems to a bank in Burlington, N.C., and retiring from another financial institution in Florence, S.C. His retirement was made special by friends and loved ones at the Raleigh RBC Center, where he enjoyed working security and helping in any way he could. He was a member of Webb Masonic Lodge 24 Richmond, Ind. Above all, he was a good husband, friend, mentor, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed. Survivors include four children, Stanley D. Beeson of Concord, Calif., Tonnyia B. Knox and husband of Tega Cay, S.C., Melissa J. Farley of Virginia Beach, Va., and Steven D. Beeson of Asheville, N.C. He leaves six grandchildren, Carrie and Kurt Bougus, Matthew, Jaimee and Conner Farley, and Bagley Knox; three nieces, a nephew; and very dear friend, Barbara Ringley and family; as well as many other special and close friends of the family. The remains were shipped here Friday night and on Saturday afternoon were interred in Twin Groves cemetery beside the remains of his wife. Mr. Rice was a brother to Mrs. Esther Butts, and uncle to J. H. Cottrill and Vint Butts, of Severy. Mr. Rice is an old resident of this section living for the past twenty years on his farm northwest of Severy. Blankenship, age 82, of Sentinel Road, Cherry Valley Township, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 12, 2012, at her residence. Born Nov. 10, 1930, in Panther, W.Va., she was the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Harless) Stacy and had lived in this area since 1963, coming from Cleveland. She was married to Theodore Blankenship on July 5, 1949, in Panther, W.Va. She retired from the Pymatuning Valley School System. Mrs. Blankenship attended the Andover Baptist Church and the Cherry Valley Church of God, she was active with the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Society and did much home missionary work. She enjoyed traveling and was active with the Pymatuning Valley School District. Survivors include three daughters, Shari L. Shevetz of Troutville, Va., Sandra L. (Jim) Phegley of Hurst, Texas and Stacy L. Blankenship-Gould of Cherry Valley Township, whom lived and lovingly cared for her mother; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph Roberts of Kissimmee, Fla. 23520	OBITUARY The Weekly True Democrat, Tallahassee, FL; 31 December 1909 Joseph H. Butts died 29 December 1909 Dr. Butts Dead. Dr. J. H. Butts, one of Tallahassee's prominent veterinary surgeons, passed into the Great Beyond Wednesday, at his home on South Calhoun Street, after a long continued illness resulting from rheumatism. Dr. Butts, before his recent illness was one of the best veterinary surgeons in this section; he was also manager of the City Wood and Coal Company. Mrs. Butts, who was Miss Beulah Horton prior to her marriage to the doctor, will live with her sister and brother, Miss Maud Horton and William Horton, who have moved here from Minnesota. They will reside at the same residence, on South Calhoun Street. Dr. Butts made many friends in and around Tallahassee, who mourn his departure. Bare, 49, of North Wilkesboro, owner of Bare's Department Stores, died in Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem last night after a critical illness of 20 days. His stores are in North Wilkesboro, Taylorsville and Boone. He had been in business in North Wilkesboro for 25 years. He was a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. Active in the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, he was a former chairman of the Chamber's Merchant's Division. Mr. Bare was born in Ashe County. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bernice Rhodes Bare; two daughters, Mrs. Rayburn Byrd of North Wilkesboro, Rt. 1, and Miss. Jane Bare of the home. 23523	OBITUARY The Yuma Sun; 13 May 2014 Dorothy Lucille Althouse Shelton passed away peacefully at Yuma Nursing Center on Friday evening, May 10, 2014. Dorothy was born in Marion, Ohio, on March 26, 1922 to Allen and Edna Althouse. Following graduation from high school in Marion, Dorothy met and married George Shelton. In August of 1945, George, Dorothy, and infant son, Bob moved to Yuma. An uncle was able to get George a job on the railroad where he continued to work until retiring as crew dispatcher. Dorothy was a bookkeeper for Dr. William A. Phillips and then for Melon Farms until her retirement. She raised three sons, Robert, Richard and David while working full-time. In retirement, Dorothy spent hours driving older church members to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, and endless errands until she was no longer able to drive. Dorothy was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Yuma. She served as Elder, Deacon, Treasurer and wedding coordinator at various times. Dorothy was a member of Eastern Star and supported her husband when he was active in the Masonic Lodge. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, George Howard Shelton; brother, Myron Althouse. She is survived by her sons, Robert of Yuma, Richard (Donna) of Tucson, and David (Janice) of Parker, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Boerlin. husband of a former Hebron woman, died Monday morning at 7 o'clock in a Berwvn, Ill. hospital. Funeral services will be held in LaGrange Ill. Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock. The body will then be brought to Hebron for burial. Relatives stated that the funeral cortege is expected to arrive at Hebron cemetery at 1 or 1:30 p. m. The wife of the deceased is the former Mrs. Bertha Rice Henry of Hebron, who married Dr. Boerlin following the death of her first husband. The Boerlans visiied in Hebron quite regularly, and were well known in this vicinity. For many years Dr. Boerlin, an oculist, maintained an office on Michigan boulevard in Chicago. He retired several years ago, and has been residing in LaGrange, Ill. Three weeks ago lie suffered a slight stroke from which he apparently had recovered. Leighton, 87 By Joe Holley Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, April 14, 2007 Frances Spatz Leighton, 87, a prolific writer and journalist who made a career chronicling the lives of people who work backstage, backstairs or in backrooms in official Washington, died April 6 of congestive heart failure at Manor Care in Arlington. She lived at Lake Barcroft in Falls Church. Ms. Leighton wrote more than 30 books and countless articles on subjects such as the White House chef during the Eisenhower years, Jacqueline Kennedy's dressmaker and personal secretary, the man who ran the Senate restaurant, the man who worked as the House of Representatives doorkeeper for 42 years (William "Fishbait" Miller) and the dogs who have occupied the White House. She began carving out her journalistic beat shortly after arriving in Washington during World War II. Among the many freelance articles she wrote for Sunday supplements and other publications, including The Washington Post, were profiles of a Washington woman who "prayed" herself thin, an Ohio-born grandmother who was the official keeper of the Great Seal of the United States and a 12-year-old freshman at Georgetown University. Many of her books were of the "with" or "as told to" variety, including "My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House" (1961), which did not end up on the remainder table after public interest had moved on to the next big thing. Written with Lillian Rogers Parks, a seamstress and maid who worked in the White House from the beginning of the Hoover administration in 1929 to the end of the Eisenhower years in 1961, the book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 26 weeks and became the basis of a nine-part NBC miniseries in 1979. When the Leighton-Parks book came out in 1961, it so alarmed the incoming first lady that she ordered all White House domestic employees to sign a pledge that they wouldn't write about their White House experiences. Jacqueline Kennedy's personal secretary for 12 years, Mary B. Gallagher, waited until 1969 to write her book, after Kennedy became Jacqueline Onassis. That book was "My Life With Jacqueline Kennedy." "Fran was such fun to work with and so conscientious," said Gallagher, who had stored away a 700-page manuscript of her reminiscences for her two sons to read when they grew up. Once she felt free to tell her story, she sought Ms. Leighton at the National Press Club. The two women worked at Gallagher's home near Alexandria nearly every day for six months to get the manuscript in shape for publication. They remained friends until Ms. Leighton's death. Ms. Leighton occasionally wrote books about the rich and famous, including "The Pat Nixon Cookbook" (1960), with recipes for tamale pie and peppermint stick cake; "In the Footsteps of John Paul II" (1980), with John Szostak; "June Allyson" (1982), with the actress; and "The Search for the Real Nancy Reagan" (1987). Reviewer Maureen Dowd didn't like the Reagan book. "If this is the unauthorized biography of the First Lady, one shudders to think what the authorized version will be like," she wrote in the New York Times. "Frances Spatz Leighton . . . is so sympathetic to Nancy Davis Reagan that she almost becomes one with her." Ms. Leighton was born Frances Ornstein on a dairy farm in Geauga County, Ohio. At Ohio State University, she wrote poetry, had a show on the campus radio station and was a member of the Verse Writers' Guild of Ohio. She told an interviewer at the time that her aim in life was "to conduct a newspaper, poetry and philosophy column." She dropped out of school three weeks before graduation and moved to Washington. Before launching her book-writing career, she was a freelance journalist with the Metro Sunday Group, a contributing editor to Family Weekly and Washington editor of This Week Magazine. A diminutive woman with red hair and piercing green eyes, she was more comfortable asking questions than answering them, recalled Ed Sauer, a longtime friend. "She was focused, animated, always interviewing you," he said. "I think she knew a lot more than she wrote." In more recent years, she wrote "How to Write and Sell Your First Novel" (1986 and 1998) and "How to Write and Sell Your First Nonfiction Book" (1990). She also gave public lectures. Her regular topics included the extramarital affairs of U.S. presidents. For the last 25 years of her life, she lived in a house filled with books and surrounded by 60-year-old azaleas. She hosted an annual azalea party the first Sunday in May, which featured great food and what she called "a round robin." Toward the end of the party, she ushered the remaining dozen or so partygoers into her living room and had each of them share a story from his or her past. Her husband, retired Air Force Col. Wayne was a former coal miner, member of the UMWA, and also formerly worked with the Tazewell County PSA. In 1960, Mike joined the United States Air Force and served this country for several years including tours in Germany, Guam and Vietnam. While serving in the Air Force Mike received several awards including the Bronze Star for his dedicated service. After leaving the Air Force, Mike continue his education at Daytona Beach Community College, were he received his Electronics Certificate. He moved to Southern Maryland 1986, where he supported the Navy as a Project Engineer at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He was known by his peers as "Mr. Lightning", because of his knowledge in the field of lightning. He retired in 2009 after 35 years of service. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and loved devoting his time and attention to his family, children, grandchildren and friends. Mike enjoyed doing the Easter egg hunt, decorating the Christmas tree, making cookies with grandchildren, celebrating birthdays with friends and family and other family gatherings. He loved country music, woodworking, and the great outdoors especially his favorite pastimes fishing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed many activities with the church youth in his earlier days, such as camping, bike trips, 50 mile hikes and driving to activities. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at The Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints, Patuxent Ward, 22747 Old Rolling Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653 conducted by Bishop Dennis Reed. You could get a small hamburger for a nickel and a deluxe for a dime. Later in years they made their home in Yakima where he was a member of the city fire department.
