23451	OBITUARY Ruby Helen Altizer, age 84, of North Tazewell, Virginia passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at her home. She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Johnson Barnette. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith. Ruby was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a lifelong resident of the area and will be missed by all those who knew her and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Altizer; one son, Leonard Altizer; one sister and two brothers. She is survived by four daughters, Zana Asbury and husband, Irland of the Earls Branch section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; Molly Sparks and husband, Stanley of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; Leona Jackson of North Tazewell, Virginia; Tina Altizer of Tazewell, Virginia; and two sons, Wade Altizer and wife, Pranee of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Wayne Altizer and wife, Mary-Ann of Wildwood, Illinois Eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great great-grandchild also survive along with a host of family and friends. 23452	OBITUARY Ruth was born December 13, 1935 in Atchison, KS to Alma (Kauffman) and George Blagg. She was a 1953 graduate of Atchison High School. Ruth married Herbert Lee Chrisjohn on January 3, 1954 in Atchison. They moved to several places during Herbert's military service in the U S Air Force and then settled in Olathe. Ruth worked in the accounting departments of the Country Club Bank on the Plaza and First National Bank in Olathe. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Olathe. Ruth enjoyed bowling and playing cards. She loved watching and supporting her family in their many activities. Ruth cherished having breakfasts and lunches with her many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert, brothers James and Robert Blagg, and sister Dorothy Gerber. Ruth is survived by her 3 children, Susan G. Hines and husband Tom of Wellsville, KS, Deborah L. McGuire and husband Larry and David B. Chrisjohn and wife Jayne, all of Spring Hill, KS; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 23453	OBITUARY Salisbury [NC] Post; 26 Apr. 2010 Thomas Clyde McSwain STAUNTON, VA. - Thomas Clyde McSwain, age 95, of Staunton, Va., died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Augusta Health, Fishersville, Va. Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Cleveland County, N.C., he was the son of the late Elam and Annie (Bell) McSwain. A well known educator throughout Virginia, he was Superintendent of Staunton Schools for 17 years from 1961 until his retirement in 1978. He held a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., which he attended on a full athletic scholarship playing football, baseball and basketball. Following graduation from Lenoir-Rhyne College he played professional baseball in North Carolina. Where he also began his career as an educator in 1940 as well as coached in the Rowan County School System in Rockwell, NC. He received his master's degree in education from the University of Virginia in 1954. He served in the United States Navy during WWII having enlisted in 1942 in former heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney's physical fitness program, called the Tuna Fish, to help train recruits. His classmates included Sammy Snead, Bob Feller, Phil Rizzuto and Peewee Reese. He was commissioned in 1943 and was named commanding officer of a destroyer escort based in Norfolk and when the war ended he was headed for the Far East. Following the War he returned to civilian life and later joined the Navy Reserve unit based at Fishersville, Va., and was commanding officer with the rank of lieutenant commander for three years. He joined the Staunton School System in 1946 as a physical education teacher at the city's five schools; and as coach of three sports and classroom teacher (math and history) at R.E. Lee High School. He left the classroom and coaching after the 1951-52 season to go into administration and opened and was principal at three new schools: Bessie Weller for four years; Westside, two years; and Northside, one year. He was appointed to the position of assistant superintendent in 1958 and he was named superintendent in 1961. During his tenure as Superintendent he led in the integration of the school system, a major building program of new schools and closure of most of the former segregated black schools. In 1964, he also served as the President of the Virginia Education Association. Citing his contribution to education, not only in Staunton but throughout the state, the School Board renamed Northside Elementary School in his honor upon his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Staunton where he earlier served as an Elder and as a member of its Christian Education Committee and taught a Sunday school class of teen-age boys. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabel Anderson McSwain; and two sisters, Gladys McSwain Thornburg and Adell McSwain Lovelace. He is survived by his second wife, Theresa (Peiffer) McSwain of Staunton; a son, Colonel (Ret) Thomas C. McSwain, Jr. and wife, Jane Crane of Shepherdstown, W.V.; daughter, Susan McSwain Lee of Chesapeake, Va. and her fiancé, James Ingram of Lesage, W.V.; stepson, Donald Peiffer and wife, Barbara of Rural Hall, N.C.; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Service and Burial: A funeral service will held on Tuesday, April 27, at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 100 East Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401, with Rev. Dr. Richard S. Dietrich officiating. Interment will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will include the staff and administrators of the Staunton City Schools attending the funeral service. 23455	OBITUARY Sequim, WA Gazette; 12 Jan 2012 Ronnie Nelson Anderson A celebration of life was held for former Sequim resident Ronnie Nelson Anderson, who died Nov. 18, 2011, in Cheyenne, Wyo., at the age of 71. He was born on May 21, 1940, in Mocksville, N.C., and grew up in Winston-Salem, N.C. He attended Davidson College and graduated from the University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill in 1962 as a Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Ph.D. in finance in 1972. He taught at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, where he met his wife, Suzanne, and later taught at the University of Maryland/College Park. After he left teaching, he worked first in research at the Treasury Department and then as director of research for the Trust Department of Equitable Trust Bank in Baltimore, Md. After retirement, the family moved to Sequim. He moved to Cheyenne in 2010. Mr. Anderson is survived by his son, Whittaker Wilmeth Anderson, his friend and former wife, Suzanne Wilmeth Anderson, both of Cheyenne; sister-in-law, Linda Anderson, Clemmons, N.C.; a niece, nephew-in-law and grand-niece. 23456	OBITUARY Severy Record; 27 May 1887 Mr. James Butts died at his home 2/1/2 miles north-west of Severy, on Monday night, last and was buried on Tuesday; Rev. Brownson, of Climax, preached the funeral sermon. A large gathering of people followed the remains to the cemetery. Mr. Butts would have been 63 years old, next Monday. He was born in Ohio and remained there for 31 years when he moved to Indiana in 1856, a place from which he came to Kansas in 1872, and onto the farm where he died. 23457	OBITUARY Severyite; 3 August 1911 J.V. Butts died at his home west of Severy at 10 o'clock Monday night, July 31, 1911, at the age of 57 years, 9 months, and 2 days. James Vinton Butts was born October 29, 1853, at Athens, Vinton County, Ohio. His parents moved to Hebron, Indiana, when he was 3 years old. He came with the family to Kansas in 1872. They located on a farm two and on-half miles west of Severy where he has lived since his father's death in 1887. His mother died in 1902. He was married to Martha Geesman, February 8, 1882. Of a family of nine children only one brother remains, Wm. H. Butts, of Oregon City, Oregon. The brothers and sisters were Mary Ann Butts, Allen J. Butts, William H. Butts, Lovina J. Mulertz, Joseph H. Butts, Matthew M. Butts, Frenda Ella Butts, and Esther Ann Bate. "Vint" as his friends always called him was a good friend and neighbor who had a host of old friends. Born in Mill Creek, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Rufus Mitchell and Clersie A. Newberry Griffith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Lonie Beatrice Griffith and one brother, Hershel James Griffith. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Ralph D. 23459	OBITUARY Sheridan Post Enterprise, 18 March 1926 In the recent death of Mrs. De Marious Lambert, 80 years old, 620 Gladstone Street, Sheridan lost a real pioneer- a woman who had spent a whole life time on the western fringe of civilization, and personally knew many of the old-time scouts and prospectors whose lives contributed glamor and romance to the west. Mrs. Lambert, who was born in Indiana, spent most of her girlhood in Iowa, when it was still the western frontier. In 1862 she and her husband, Jonathan Cobb, traveled by ox teams across the desolate western plains to Colorado. Because there were no stores nor supply stations, they carried a year's provisions with them. They located at the present site of Colorado City, Colo. but were driven out by hostile Sioux Indians. Many of their neighbors and friends were killed and scalped in the Indian uprising and the Cobbs escaped only by driving all night to a log stockade. They then traveled over the old Bozeman trial and the Bridger trail to Montana. Mr. Cobb, an early time prospector, was one of the discoverers of the Lost Chance gulch, one of the largest placer gold mines ever located in Montana. That gulch was the site of Helena, capital of the state. There they became acquainted with Jim Bridger and Frank Girard, scouts. The family then went back to Indiana and twenty years ago returned to Wyoming. For years they lived on a ranch midway between Dayton and Ranchester. The Bridger trail that they followed so many years ago, crosses Tongue River on their ranch. After Mr. Cobb's death, his widow married James Lambert. Mrs. Lambert is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alice Williams, 620 Gladstone street, Sheridan, and Mrs. F. E. Williams, Spirit Lake, Idaho. A son, T. A. Cobb, Dayton rancher, was killed by lightening six years ago. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Claire, Jonathan and Otis Cobb. Out of town people who attended her funeral were Mrs. T. A. Cobb, Dayton; Mrs. F. E. Williams, Spirit Lake, Idaho; Mrs. C. H. Mayberry, Glenwood, In; Miss Fern Williams, Tabor, In, Mrs. E. A. Rice, Eureka, Montana, Mrs. Tom Black, Pocatello, Idaho; Mrs. Edna Yearns, Billings. The day of Mrs. Lambert's funeral, Mrs. T. A. Cobb of Dayton was summoned to Billings by word of the death of her mother, Mrs. Mary Otis. 23461	OBITUARY Sikeston Standard Democrat; 12 Oct 2008 Lawrence "Bud" Fugate, 65, died Oct. 10, 2008, at his home in Sikeston. Born Oct. 27, 1942, in Morehouse, son of the late Orby Lawrence and Flora (Cole) Fugate, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Calvary and stationed in Germany. He had worked as an air quality control foreman at Noranda Aluminum. On Oct. 18, 1965, he married Alfreda Abernathy, who survives of the home. Other survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Tim Finney, Bethley and Shawn Clinton, Tisha and Ron Pruitt, and Chasity and Chris Russell; one brother, Danny Fugate; four sisters, Ann Patton, Donna Kay Franny, Jeanetta Groves and Jane Skinner-Evans; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother, Paul Fugate, preceded him in death. Visitation was at Ponder Funeral Home, where funeral services were conducted. The Rev. Mary McCord, pastor of First Christian Church, officiated. 23466	OBITUARY Springfield News-Leader; 22 Oct 2006 Vera C. Tate, age 91, beloved sister and aunt, died peacefully in her sleep on October 19, 2006, at Manor Care after a brief illness. She was born to Fredrick Meyer and Alma Lampe Meyer near Freistatt, MO. On December 19, 1937, she married John D. Tate. Vera and John lived in Springfield where he worked for the Frisco Railroad and she worked for J.C. Penneys and Zales. She and John had no living children of their own but opened their home and were "mom and dad" to many MSU college students away from home who are still like family members today. A longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vera enjoyed being a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and a Sunday School teacher. She also belonged to the Cloverleaf Extension Club and volunteered extensively with the Lutheran Student Center at Missouri State University. Preceding Vera in death were her parents, her husband and an infant daughter, Joann; a brother, Arthur Meyer and two infant sisters, Orba and Della Ruth Meyer. Survivors include her sister, Lorna Flowers of Springfield; sister, Irma Flowers and her husband, Bill, of rural Monett; brother, Raymond Meyer and his wife, Betty, of San Jose, CA; and sister-in-law, Janice Meyer of rural Monett. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are at the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Midtown, Springfield, October 24, 2006. She was a member of the Staunton Church of the Brethren, Sunshine Sunday school class of the church and the People of the Covenant. 23469	OBITUARY Staunton Spectator and Vindicator; Staunton, VA; 7 April 1905 Rev. M. Finley Pilson, whose illness with typhoid fever was noted last week, died on Monday afternoon at the hospital in Elkins, W. Va., after two weeks' illness. Mr. Pilson was a young man of beautiful character and early dedicated his life to his maker. He was born near Greenville 27 years ago, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Pilson, and a brother of Mr. E. T. Pilson, all of whom survive him. He was educated at Hampden-Sidney college, where he took A.B., and after teaching a year, took the three years' course at the Union Theological seminary. Being admitted to the ministry of the Presbyterian church, he was assigned to the mission field at Coalton, W. Va., at which point he had labored in vacation previously. He was very zealous in his work, and to his excessive zeal is attributed his illness, as he labored incessantly. Mr. Pilson was brought up in the First church here, and was there ordained to preach, and that congregation felt a deep interest in his success and welfare. He gave promises of many years of usefulness and of attaining high rank in the ministry. His sudden death will bring grief to all who had been watching his promising career. Rice, 89, prominent hotel man for more than 40 years died at 7:45 p.m. Monday following a brief illness. Mr. Rice, who operated the Lincoln Hotel in Sterling, during his years as hotel man had establishments in Sterling, Dixon, Elgin, DeKalb and Freeport. Milton was born Oct. 28, 1865 in Westville, Ind. and came to Illinois when a young man. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away in January of 1947. Mr. Rice observed his 89th birthday Thursday, Oct. 28 when members of his family gathered at the Lincoln Hotel for a dinner party. Milton is survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Keith Benson Sr., of Sterling; Mrs. Carl Degenhart, St. Charles, and Mrs. Grover McDonald, Dixon; Roy Rice, DeKalb, and Lee Rice, Tucason, Ariz. Ten grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Trouth Funeral Home, with Rev. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 3, at 1:30 p.m., at the Forrest United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe, conducted by the Rev. Shirley Rogers. He was a well known Wytheville dentist for over 43 years before his retirement. He was born in Honaker, his family soon moved to Ivanhoe, where he spent his entire childhood. He was a 1929 graduate of Ivanhoe High School and later graduated from Fork Union Military Academy. He also attended Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. For his medical studies he transferred to the University of Toronto, Canada, and obtained his degree in dentistry in 1937, then returned to Wytheville to open his practice. He was a decorated major with the U.S. Army Medical Corps of the 263rd Infantry during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Maude Mullins Speer of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Tibbett L. 23473	OBITUARY SW VA Enterprise, Wythville, VA; 15 July 2006 Maude Mullins Speer, 91, a long time resident of Wytheville, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Wythe County Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at Wytheville Presbyterian Church. She was the third of five children born in the little town of Glamorgan, in Wise County to William Henderson Mullins and Louise Vermillion Mullins. The family moved to Harlan, Ky., where her father ran a general merchandise store. She lived in Harlan for more tha 20 years, attending local schools and later teaching in them. She was graduated in 1950 from Emory & Henry College. A few years later, she made her first visit to Wytheville because her dentist in Harlan referred her for specialty work to local dentist, Dr. Clyde V. Speer. Upon completion of her dental work, she returned to Harlan. A year later, she was startled to receive a phone call from Dr. Speer who asked if she remembered him and if so, could he come visit. A happy courtship and marriage of nearly 40 years followed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clyde Speer, in 1992. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tibbett Speer and Alex Neill of Washington, D.C.; and several nieces including Jayne Poynter of Corbin, Ky., and Mary Margaret Serpento of Farming Hills, Mich. 23476	OBITUARY Terrell Gordon Davis passed away at the age of 73 on Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC. He was born January 22, 1941 in Asheville, NC. He was predeceased by his father, George Gordon Davis, and his mother, Maretta Reedy Davis. He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert E. Scroggs. He is survived by his sister, Lynda "Lynne" Scroggs, and his brother, Jim Davis, both of Asheville, as well as several nieces and nephews. Terrell was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed by In-Town Motor Lodge as head of maintenance for the last twenty years, retiring last year to Ridgecrest, NC. Over the years, Terrell also did remodels, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry for homeowners and businesses. He could fix most anything and was ready to help those who could not afford to pay a lot for his services. His motto was, "You Break It-I'll Fix It". He sometimes told that he was the one who "broke it". He had a great sense of humor and loved to share jokes and make people laugh. The family wishes to thank the VA Medical Center staff for the wonderful care he received in the Emergency Department and while a patient there over the last couple months. Our thanks to all those who have been praying for him. He will be missed by his family and friends. The family will have a private service for Terrell at a later date. Rice, longtime book selection chief for Reader's Digest, died Wednesday of lung cancer at her Tucson home. She was 53. After a brief stint at McCall's magazine, Rice moved on to Reader's Digest, where she worked for 25 years before retiring two years ago, said her husband of 18 years, Gary D. Yanker. While at Reader's Digest, Rice was head of its New York Book Rights and Scouting Department, Yanker said. She negotiated with publishers for magazine excerpts and condensed works, including the autobiography of Margaret Thatcher and Elmore Leonard novels, Yanker said. Rice also oversaw acquisition for the digest's 40 worldwide editions, he said. Rice was born Sept. 1, 1944, in St. Louis and grew up there before attending Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, Yanker said. She graduated in 1966. Rice retired in 1996, and the family moved to Tucson, he said. In Tucson, Rice was a volunteer at Manzanita Elementary School, he said. She was active Women in Publishing, the American Publishers Association and Literacy Volunteers of New York, Yanker said. "She believed that written language is the bedrock of all education; that to write well and to communicate well, one has to be well-read," said Yanker. Rice was diagnosed with cancer two months ago, Yanker said. She is survived by her husband; a son, Andrew Gary Yanker; her father, John H. She was a faithful lifetime member of Spring Garden Friends Meeting and the Society of Friends. She worked as a homemaker and bookkeeper in the family businesses. Vardelle remained active, living in her own home until her brief recent illness and made it to within two weeks of her 92nd birthday. In her earlier years, she was fond of hand crafts, knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting and sang in a gospel trio with her sister and father. She was a quiet woman with a prodigious green thumb and was famous for taking tiny florist garden plants given to her for special occasions and growing them into four foot high Palm trees touching the ceiling. Vardelle particularly enjoyed the retirement time spent at their beach home on Oak Island and her family. She was a survivor of Greensboro's first recorded tornado which famously struck downtown Greensboro in April of 1935, doing damage estimated at over $1,200,000 over 2.5 miles and she remained ever after an intense observer of changing weather patterns and cloud formations. Vardelle was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Thomas B. Yow Sr.; her brother; a granddaughter; and grandson. She is survived by a sister, Agnes D. Ozment; two nieces; and a nephew. Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Thomas B. Yow Jr. and Barry D. Yow and wife, Mary Ann, of Asheboro; two daughters, Brenda Y. Parker and husband, Dr. H.R. Parker and Dianne Y. She graduated from the University of MO., where she met her future husband, Murrell Dee Thomas, both of them were members of "Phi Beta Kappa." She moved OKC in 1947 where she became a founder of "Geologists Wives' Assoc." and a beloved member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for 51 years. She served as an elder in the church and was very active in Mobile Meals, the youth club and mission activity. She was a consistently joyful person who loved life and walked 4 miles a day. She took particular joy in her family: son, Jim, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, daughter-in-law, Donna, and grandchildren, Beth (12) and Daniel (8). She was born July 20, 1925, in Hattiesburg, Miss., the daughter of Virgil and Leveda (Rogers) Fillingane. She is survived by a daughter and her partner, Janice Brady and Ken Lewis of North Stonington; a brother and sister-in-law, Hulon and Shelby Fillingane of Montross, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mary Brady of Glasgow, Va.; nieces, Susan Brady of El Cerrito, Calif., Carole Glidden of Sarasota, Fla., Jane McEntire of Charlotte, N.C., Stephanie Standley of Chantilly, Va.; nephew, Perry Fillingane of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Bonnie married Tate Thompson Brady on July 14, 1945. He died Jan. 15, 1993. They lived in many towns in Virginia before moving to Richmond in 1963 where Tom worked for Virginia Electric and Power Co. (now Dominion Resources), and Bonnie worked at The Colony Shop in River Road Shopping Center. Bonnie was a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church where she had served as a deacon. Bonnie enjoyed playing bridge, dining out with family and friends, shopping, and decorating. She was a kind, beautiful, and elegant Southern lady who appreciated beauty and elegance in her surroundings. Her motto was, "Smile and be nice." She lived up to that adage all her life. They were attended from town by quite a large concourse, and they were met at Stirling by a very large congregation. The remains were carried into the church, which the good man had served so long and faithfully and touching remarks were made by Revs. J.B. Marsh and W.M. Hunter.
