23201	OBITUARY Bristol Herald Courier; 6 Jan 2013 ABINGDON, Va. Paula Sharon Whiteaker, age 59, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born April 27, 1953, in Bristol, Va., a daughter of Fred L. Roberts and Pauline Roberts. She lived most of her life in Washington County, Va., and was a graduate of Central High School and Virginia Highlands Community College. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter and sister. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Roberts; and two grandsons, Justyn Whiteaker and Nathan Whiteaker. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Frank Whiteaker; her children, David and Brandi Whiteaker, Fred Whiteaker, Pam and Shelton Pittman, James Whiteaker, and Kimberly and Bryan Adams; her father, Fred L. Roberts; her grandchildren, Billy, Michael, and Jetti Whiteaker, Zachary Whiteaker, and Jared and Tori Adams; her siblings, Fred Roberts, Linda and George Johnson, Pam and Neil White, and Chris and Christina Mercer; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at 5 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 13 Heritage Dr., near Exit 7, Bristol, Va., with Bishop Jeff Bauserman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Whiteaker Family Cemetery, off Old Jonesboro Road, near the family residence in Abingdon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. 23202	OBITUARY Bristol Herald Courier; 6 June 2013 BRISTOL, Tenn. Leroy Dean Akers, 81, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, unexpectedly at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Abingdon, Va., on Oct. 6, 1931, a son of the late Ed and Pearl Akers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Pruitt Akers; and brother, C. E. Akers. Leroy is survived by his children, Jerry Akers and wife Ruth of Bristol, Va., Kathy Thomas of Johnson City, Tenn., Venida Kelly of Hayters Gap, Va., and Dion Akers and wife Crystal of Bristol, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth Akers of Abingdon and Eugene Akers of Bristol, Va.; and sister, Nellie Hay of Abingdon. 23203	OBITUARY Byron Kenneth Duke, 62, Nevada, MO died Monday, January 2, 2012, at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, KS as the result of a sudden illness. He was born August 1, 1949 in Sikeston, MO to James Owen Duke and Claire Dunn Duke. He was married September 26, 1971 in Pasadena, CA to Sharyon Taylor and she survives of the home. Byron was born in Sikeston, MO, and grew up in Southern California where he graduated from Imperial Schools. Byron graduated from Ambassador College in 1971 in Big Sandy, Texas with a degree in accounting. He took graduate courses at Cal State in Los Angeles. Byron and his wife Sharyon and children Brandon and Sharby moved to Missouri in 1979, residing in Blue Springs, Booneville, and Columbia, before moving to Nevada in 1986. He has served since then as Chief Accountant for the Nevada Habilitation Center, where he was the 2011 Employee of the Year. He was a member of the NRA and a hunting enthusiast and loved being in the woods. Byron was treasurer for Community Fellowship Church in Carterville, MO for more than 20 years. He worked with the youth ministry and activities for several years, sang in the choir and was worship leader. He also sang in the Nevada Community Choir. Byron was a loving husband, father, brother, and son. He will be greatly missed. 23204	OBITUARY Cameron Daily News, Cameron, MO; 21 June 1918 KILLED BY LIGHTNING John C. Stade Meets Instant Death Last Evening John Charles Stade, 20 year old son of John Stade, two miles east of the city, was instantly killed about 7 o'clock last evening, at the farm of Chas. Logue, seven miles north of the city. Mrs. Stade and wife and Mr. Logue were in the yard near the residence at the time of the accident. Stade had returned to the house after some article and was returning, when about twenty yards from his wife and Mr. Logue, there was a sharp crash of thunder and a flash of lightning, and Stade was seen to fall forward upon his face. Mrs. Stade was also severly shocked, but was prevented from falling by Mr. Logue. As soon as possible he ran to the prostrate body of Stade and discovered that death had been instantaneous. The body was quite badly burned about the head, chest and extremities. Young Stade was a first class young man in every respect, and was married about a year ago to Miss Vera Bell Rice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Rice, and for the past six months has been employed by Chas. Logue on his farm seven miles north of the city. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 tomorrow morning at the L.D.S. Church on North Main Street, and interment will be in Graceland cemetery. ----------- Cameron Daily Observer, Cameron, MO; 21 June 1918 KILLED BY LIGHTNING Charles Stade was instantly killed when struck by lightning Thursday evening shortly before 7 o'clock. The most unfortunate occurrence happened on the Chas. Logue farm about one mile northwest of Mabel. Mr. Logue is a widower and Mr. & Mrs. Stade were keeping house for him and assisting with the work on the farm. A fishing excursion had been planned for the evening in which a brother, Fred Stade, and wife; Mr. & Mrs. Vincent McCord and Paul Fiddick of Cameron were to participate. Mr. Logue and Mr. & Mrs. Stade had finished their supper and while waiting for their guests had started to the pasture to doctor a sick colt. Young Stade had returned to the barn for a nose twitch and was approaching his wife and Logue, whistling as he came. A crack of lightning and Mrs. Stade pitched forward against Mr. Logue, stunned into semiconsciousness. The same bolt struck her husband: tearing his cap to shreds, burning its way down the body and tearing his left shoe to pieces. Mr. Logue turned to see the stricken body crumble to the ground and knew it was beyond all earthly aid. Within a few monents the little party from Cameron drove up in high spirits, unconscious of the terrible tragedy just enacted. The body of the young husband, for he had just passed his 20th birthday, was carried to the house, and later brought to the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Stade, one mile east of Cameron. Funeral services will be held at the Latterday Saints church at 10:30 Saturday morning, conducted by Elder J.W. Roberts. Interment in the Packard cemetery. The death of this young man is a most sorrowful shock to a host of relatives and friends. A splendid worker combined with a happy disposition he and his wife were ideally situated with Mr. Logue and supremely happy. Mrs. Stade is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Rice of our city. The couple had been married about one and a half years, being so young at the time it was necessary for their parents to accompany them to Plattsburg to procure the marriage license. Burial was in Graceland cemetery. The Rev. John Gooding, Chillicothe, afficiated. Mrs. Logue died Friday in San Mateo, Calif., at the home of a daughter, Mrs. LaVerla Elliott. She had been in California about three months. Mrs. Logue was a glass sculptor and ran a ceramics business in her home here. She was united in marriage to Charles Edwin Logue Mar. 10, 1919 who preceded her death. She was a member of the RLDS church of Cameron. ANNA EDWARDS DIED YESTERDAY Funeral Services Today at the Baptist Church Mrs. Anna Rice Edwards, 82 years old, since 1879 a resident of Canton, passed away at the home of her grandson, Warren Edwards, in Wichita, yesterday morning following a long illness. The funeral will be held this afternoon, 2 o'clock at the Canton Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Harry Burden. Interment will be made in the Canton cemetery. Canton chapter of Eastern Star of which she was a charter member will have charge of the service at the cemetery. Mrs. Edwards was a native of Indiana. She was born at Westville. On October 19, 1873 she was married to John W. Edwards at Fairbury, Nebr. She was the mother of three sons: Floyd, and Arvin Willis, both deceased; and Charles M. Edwards of Wichita, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Fay Champlin. She was a member of the Christian church, Order of Eastern Star and Past Matrons club. She was a charter member of the Canton chapter of Eastern Star and a past worthy matron. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards came to Canton to enter the hotel business. They moved the old hotel from north of the Rock Island tracks and joined it onto another building which made the present Canton Hotel. After her husband's death, Mrs. Edwards operated the hotel for a number of years. "Grandmother" Edwards, as she was affectionately known to many in the community, had a wide circle of neighbors and friends who sorrow at her death.	RICE, Hanna Ann (I29042)
23211	OBITUARY Canton Pilot; 16 Jan 1919 Freeman Rice Freeman Rice was born in Ohio, November 25, 1830, died January 12, 1919, at the age of 88 years, 1 month, 17 days. He moved to Indiana in childhood and lived there till he was married. He moved to Missouri in 1869. His family consisted of five boys and three girls of which one of the daughters, Mrs. Anna Edwards and three sons, E.C. Rice of Evergreen, Colorado, H.E. Rice of Cameron, Missouri and M.E. Rice of Dixon, Illinois, still remain. Mr. Rice has been living here with his daughter, Mrs. Edwards at the hotel where he died Sunday. Twenty-nine grandchildren also survive him. The remains were taken to Cameron, Missouri, Tuesday, accompanied by Mrs. Edwards and H.E. Rice for burial. The family has the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. 23212	OBITUARY Carley Huddleston Smith, age 82, Joplin, Mo., passed away at 4:07 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2015, at Freeman Health System. Carley was born May 8, 1933, in Oregon to the late Vivan A. Teeters and Clara Mae Huddleston Teeters and had lived in Milan, Ill., for 50 years before moving to Joplin in 2013. She was a 3rd and 4th grade school teacher for 35 years at Hampton Elementary. Following her retirement, she volunteered as a hospice chaplain and was active with the Joplin Association of the Blind. Carley is survived by a son, Lee W. Smith, and his wife, Theresa, Joplin; a daughter, Judy C. Pauley, and her husband, James, Coal Valley, Ill.; one brother, Phillip Teeter, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Carley was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. A visitation is planned for Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.Funeral services will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, on Monday, August 31. 23213	OBITUARY Caspar Star Tribune, 20 February 2009 Ronald Harry Sizemore, Ron to those who knew him well, was born on February 28, 1942 in Charleston, West Virginia, to Harry Hiram Sizemore and Eula Beavers Sizemore. Ron was raised in the coal mining country of southwestern Virginia and West Virginia as his father worked as miner and later a butcher for the company store. Ron attended Big Creek High School in West Virginia until his senior year. He was a member of the "Rocket Boys." The Rocket Boys (also known by the film adaptation "October Sky") is Homer Hickam, Jr's memoir portraying life growing up in a West Virginia company mining town, and a boy's pursuit of amateur rocketry inspired by the launch of Sputnik. Today, the book is one of the most often picked community/library reads in the United States. During his last year of high school his family moved to Northern Virginia where he graduated from Arlington's Wakefield High School in 1960. Around Washington DC, Ron worked as an auto mechanic; a trade he learned at the knee of his grandfather. He worked for the National Chamber of Commerce and later became a computer programmer for the Washington Post. In 1964, Ron married his first wife, Nancy Krushensky, and they had two children, Bonnie Lynn and Robert Zane, and later divorced. In 1974, while visiting Vivi and Gary Crandall in the Sweetwater area, Ron met one of the loves of his life; Wyoming. After that visit, Ron quit his job at the Washington Post moved to Wyoming and went to work for Bernard Sun on the Sun Ranch near Rawlins. In February 1976, Ron met the other love of his life, Jane Chiswell Bayless. He went to work for the True companies of Casper as a computer programmer in August and they were married in February of 1977. While working for True for over 30 years, Ron became their IT Manager and retired in April 2007. He was a member of the Casper Petroleum Club. Ron served on the board of directors and spent a year as president. An avid reader, Ron was a wordsmith and a firm believer in self education. His interests included: photography, woodworking, reading, history, Wyoming, and anything that would increase his knowledge of the workings of life. Ron enjoyed his dog, visiting with his family, and traveling. Ron Sizemore died on February 19, 2009 in his Casper home after a five year bout with renal cell cancer under the care of his wife Jane and Hospice. He is survived by his wife Jane Chiswell Sizemore of 32 years, his daughter Bonnie Lynn Sizemore Collier, of Louisa Virginia; his sons Steven Herbert Bayless, of Arlington, Virginia and Robert Zane Sizemore of Cleveland, Texas; stepmother Amelia Sizemore of Tazwell, Virginia; siblings Judith Sizemore Fuller of Reading, Pennsylvania, and Kathy Sizemore Matney of Marion, Virginia; sister-in-law Jeannie Hulse, and her family, and his dog Angus. Memorial services will be Tuesday, February 24th at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Kenneth was united in marriage to Anne Price on October 16, 1949 in Augsburg, Germany. She preceded him in death. He later married Mary Joan "Jo" Goyette on May 19, 1962 in Miami, Oklahoma. She also preceded him in death. He was the owner of Swaney's Auto Service. He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Roberts and husband Mike, Kathy Muller and husband Pat, and Carole Swaney; four grandchildren, Alice Frizzell and husband Justin, Mary Roberts, Matthew Muller, and Tyler Muller; one great-granddaughter, Grayson Frizzell; two sisters, Thelma Asher, and Melva Hudson and husband Tom; one brother, Bill Swaney and wife Cora; and sister-in-law Marlene Swaney. Rice Jr., 93 Dr. Clair Malcolm Rice Jr., 93, a Skokie physician who served as an army surgeon in World War II, died in his home Sunday, Nov. 4, after a long illness. The son of a doctor in Roselawn, Ind., Dr. Rice decided at an early age to follow his father into medicine. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1935 and moved to Detroit, where he briefly worked as a team physician for the Detroit Tigers. In the early days of World War II, Dr. Rice volunteered for the service and received training as a traumatic orthopedic surgeon. He was sent to New Guinea where he operated on wounded soldiers and also treated prisoners of war. In 1945 he returned to Evanston and started a family practice he would continue for 47 years. His wife, Elizabeth, whom he had known since college, died in 1959. Throughout his career, Dr. Rice served as a delegate to the Illinois State Medical Society, and he was a 50-year member of the North Shore Branch of the Chicago Medical Society. In the early 1970s, Dr. Rice married Arlene Arndorfer. They traveled to such places as Africa, South America and Australia. Dr. Rice is survived by a son, C. Mrs. Yow retired from Inglewood Nursing Home where she served as bookkeeper for many years. After retirement, she worked at the Lakeland Surgical Clinic in Jackson as bookkeeper. Mrs. Yow was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Yow enjoyed cooking, sewing and spending time with her family. 23228	OBITUARY Curtis Lee Altizer, the son of Ralph M. and Belva L. (Winebarger) Altizer, was born October 18, 1946, in Bishop, Virginia, and passed away December 3, 2003, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa. he was 57 years old. As a young boy, Curt lived in Bishop until he was 9 years old. He moved with his family to Tazewell, Virginia, where he graduated from high school in 1964. He attended four years at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served his country for four years including a tour of duty in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. On June 23, 1973, Curt was united in marriage to Susan Swigart at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. To this union, Tricia and Todd were born. Curt and his brothers had formerly operated the Altizer Construction Company in Virginia. Later he operated the Altizer Construction Company in the Shenandoah area. For a few years, Curt was associated with Job Service for the State of Iowa. He was also employed by Eaton Manufacturing Company in Shenandoah for many years. Being an avid outdoorsman as well as a carpenter, Curt enjoyed hunting and working on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, where he put in countless hours helping to develop the trail, especially in decking the bridges. He enjoyed riding his bicycle on the Trace and participated in several RAGBRI rides across Iowa. Curt often spent hours cutting wood for the fireplace at home. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan. He also enjoyed spending time in their yard and garden. Curt was a history buff with a great interest in the Civil War and researched their family history. He was a member of American Legion Post #88, a board member of Wabash Trace Nature Trail, a participant in the Southwest Iowa Theatre Group and appeared in Dear Iowa and To Kill a Mockingbird. Preceding Curt in death were his father, Ralph Altizer; brother, Wayne Altizer; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Vernon and Ruth Swigart; and brother-in-law, Bill Combs. The song service was rendered by Mrs. Reese Pickrel and Mrs. Dick McDonald, with Mrs. Claude McCoy as accompanist at the piano. He was cared for at home the rest of the time and mostly by his wife, Mrs. George W. Rice, and had a nurse only the last 11 days. He was married to Gertrude S. Fields, Sept. 8, 190, at Gilson in the Methodist parsonage by the Rev. Mr. Rist. He leaves his widow and adopted son, Homer Edward; two sisters, Mrs. Anna E. Anderson of Lisco, Neb., and Mrs. Lavina Lutcavish of Laramie, Wyo., and one brother, Edward Rice of Canton, Mo. 23236	OBITUARY Democratic Messenger; 30 Mar 1939 Mrs. Martha Butts Laid to Rest Martha Geesaman was born in Cedar county, Iowa, March 16, 1865, and departed this life in her home near Severy, Kansas, March 17, 1939, aged 74 years and one day. She moved with her parents to Adams county, Iowa, when a child and lived there until the age of fifteen years, and then came with her parents to a farm west of Severy, Kansas, in 1880. She was united in marriage to J. V. Butts February 8, 1882. They located on a farm two and one-half miles west of Severy, where she has lived until the time of her death, her husband having preceded her in death July 31, 1911. She was a member of the Congregational church of Severy, always faithful in church attendance and work in the Mite Society until her health failed. Of a family of twelve children, only two brothers and one sister remain: Charles of the home, Wesley of Muskogee, Okla., and Sally of Arkansas City. She also leaves to mourn her death several nieces and nephews. She was a good neighbor to all around her, always ready to do any service within her power to help relieve in times of need and suffering. Truly we may say "They loved her best who knew her best." He lived most of his life in Webster County and spent 16 years in Omaha, Nebraska. Ted was a member of Union Valley Union Mission Church where he was the Youth Leader. He was also the former Youth Leader for the Union Mission Conference. He had a way with young people who he loved and who loved him. They all called him "Teddy Bear". Ted was a true Man of God who never met a stranger and always had a smile. He loved his family and his grand kids. 23248	OBITUARY Fairbury Gazette, Fairbury, NB; 3 August 1878 KILLED BY LIGHTNING. During the storm last evening Mrs. Freeman Rice was struck and instantly killed by lightning. She was sitting near the middle of the room when the bolt descended through a stove pipe which projected through the roof, striking her in the head. Dr. Wilcox was at once called but he could detect no signs of life, death being doubtless instantaneous. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. P.C. Rice, who was sitting near her was also severely shocked but not seriously injured. Mrs. Rice has resided in Fairbury for some time and was generally known and universally respected. 23249	OBITUARY FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. Georgia Nell Absher Buckles, 74, of Fauquier County, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Buckles had retired from the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., as a bookkeeper. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mt. Vernon, Va. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katie Buckles of Stafford, Va. and her parents, Charles Allen Absher and Rena Bell Chambers Absher of Raven, Va. Five brothers, Dewey, Lloyd, Roy, James and William. Two sisters, Artie Absher Keen and Mattie Mae Absher Stilwell. She is survived by her husband, Joe H. Buckles; one daughter, Wanda Neal and son-in-law, Larry R. Neal of Midland, Va.; three grandchildren, Larry E. Neal, Kelly Ann Lester and Joe W. Swerchek; two sisters; Maxie Absher Williamson and Rosa Absher Messick; six great grandchildren, Alan Ray Lester, Laura Nell Lester, Larry E. Neal II, Joe William Swerchek Jr., Zachary Neal and Noah Swerchek; a special caregiver and family friend, Ann Follin of Hague, Va. The family will receive friends today, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, Fredericksburg, Va. where a funeral will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Bill Kittle and the Rev. Paul Curry will officiate. Interment will be in Rock Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Ruby, Va. 23250	OBITUARY Fayola M. Galloway, 72, of Danville, passed away Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at her residence. She was born Sept. 9, 1938, in Casey County to the late William Lewis and Opal Cook Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack L. Galloway. She was a faithful member of Fort Logan Church of Christ and a former sales clerk for Wal-Mart. She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, cooking and spoiling her grandchildren. Mrs. Galloway is survived by her two sons, Darren (Tammy) Galloway and Billy (Melissa) Galloway, both of Danville; two daughters, Tammy Clark and Judy (Tim) Wallace, also of Danville; two brothers, Ronald (Martha) Cox of Texas, and Billy Wayne (Kathy) Cox of Florida; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special aunt, Christine Cox, of Danville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mack Dwayne Galloway. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home with evangelist Wayne Galloway officiating. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
