23123 Note by Peter David Whitaker

By 1861 she was living as "Head" with her children at Giggal Hill, Ossett. This is on the south side of The Green, where Joseph was brought up. She remained there in 1871 and in 1881 when the road was renamed as Manor Road. By 1881 she had a grandson called Joseph who was the illegitimate child of Emma probably named after his grandfather.

No obvious trace of her has been found in the 1891 census so she may have died by that time.

23148 Notes by Peter David Whitaker

The last of Fred's children, Walter was born on 18 April 1889 at 37 Elizabeth Terrace, Dewsbury. This was just up Leeds cutting on the east side. He is recorded at this address in the 1891 census but at 47 South Street in 1901.

He was apprenticed, as a cabinet maker, to Herbert Senior on Daisy Hill. In 1910, on his 21st birthday, Walter was presented by his employer with a copy of "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam." This was a then newly published translation of ?These pearls of thought in Persian?? and coupled with his violin playing adds a sensitivity to his character.

In World War I, he served in the 2/4th Battalion of the King?s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. This was a Territorial Force battalion first formed at Wakefield on 30th September 1914 initially as a reserve to train recruits for the First Battalion. It eventually saw action when it went to France and Flanders on 15 January 1917.

His army number was 200912 but his service records were destroyed in a major fire at the War Office in World War II. Reaching the dizzy heights of acting Corporal, he received the Victory and British Medals for serving (and surviving) in France. At the time of his discharge (26 November 1919) he was a temporary sergeant.

By trade or profession he was a furniture and cabinet maker. He later worked for Bicker's, a large Department store in Dewsbury.
Whitaker, Walter (I12344)

23149 Notes for JAHIEL DOUGLAS TATE:

Texas County, Missouri was formerly Ashley County. Texas County was organized February 14, 1845 from Shannon and Wright Counties. The new County was named for the Lone Star State. Houston, the county seat, was named for General Sam Houston, the "hero" of San Jacinto. Townships in the county are Boone, Burdine, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Current, Date, Jackson, Lynch, Morris, Ozark, Pierce, Piney, Roubidoux, Sargent, Sherrill, and Upton. The Texas County courthouse was destroyed during the Civil War, it burned on February 12, 1881 and again on December 14, 1930.

Information from "History of Cooper County", by W. F. Johnson, 1919 and "Tate Families of Southern States", by Metzel and Updike, 1972.

Douglas and Sarah (Price) Tate, the former of whom was born in Warren County Tenn., and the latter in Jackson County ALA., who came with their family to Sherrill Township., Texas County, Missouri in 1852 and settled on a farm in Texas County where they spent the remainder of their lives. Douglas Tate and wife were the parents of 11 children of whom Louisa Tally was the fourth in order of birth.

The names and ages of children born in Warren County, TN were confirmed by the Warren County, TN 1850 Census. On that Census it indicates that he was a farmer whose land was worth approximately $300.

He married his second wife, Rachael C., a widow with three daughters. E., b. 1855; Harriett McLaughlin, b. 1860 AR and Adaline McLaughlin, b. 1862, AR. These children were listed in the Sherill, Texas County Census of 1870, pg 479-34 and 1880, pg 368-272.

Douglas and Rachael had two additional children, Thomas J. Tate, b. 1871 and Emma Tate, b. 1874 in Sherrill Township.

23150 Notes for JOHN STUBBLEFIELD TATE:

Excerpt from the Tate Families of Southern States, Volume II, Laura Metzel and Ethel Speer Updike, 1984

He was mentioned in his father's will of June 22, 1880 in Kaufman County, TX. However, I don't think John S. ever lived outside of TN. He was living with his brother Andrew Jackson Tate and James Tate in 1850 in the Samuel Dykes home. His father has been married to Sarah Tate for eleven years so it is thought they were living with their grandparents' family. In 880, the family was living in Altamont, Grundy County, TN.
