He had come to the Mountain Grove area in 1854. Somehow he became involved with Union persons in skirmishes and was captured and taken to Springfield, MO to the Federal Stockade where he was held. Later, when released, he came home to find that his wife, Sarah had died. [Note: the information about his wife dying, was not Sarah since she lived until the 1880's. He enlisted at Licking, MO on January 1862, Confederate 1st and 4th Consolidated Regiment. He was on the Company Muster Roll, November and December 1862. He was last paid on October 30, 1862 and for each two months until it shows him killed. Notes from Aline Brown Tate Very little is known about James Tate and Sarah A. Flowers Tate----especially James Tate. They were living in (Texas) near Licking, Missouri when the boys were born. According to the son, James C. Tate, his father was serving in the Army during the Civil War in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. His mother received word he was sick. She took the two small boys and a slave to drive the oxcart; two barrels of salt to use as money and went to Louisiana to see her husband. When they got there she was told he had died of small pox and already buried. That was when small pox was raging there. She came back to Missouri, and later married again. Herndon (online at Library of Virginia), there was a gravestone for: "John Tate Oct. 1747 (married Mary Doak)" It lists: "Sources of Information: Informant: Sr. Alexander Murphy, descendant of Bumgardners, Bethel Green, R.F.D., Staunton, Virginia." There are documented mistakes in this survey on dates and wife Betsy Humphreys/Blackwood McCutchan. It described the cemetery in 1936 as: "overgrown with weeds, bushes, briars, etc. as to be nearly inaccessible. It is on the top of a ridge completely surrounded by woods. ....many of the graves are deeply sunken, stones fallen and inscriptions obliterated." It adds "information given in the parenthesis." KIRK and Mary Jane KIRK married MARY "MOLLIE" ELLEN CARVER, daughter of Green CARVER and Martha L. STAPP in Pickens County, Alabama. Robert Early Kirk was a school teacher and Mollie was one of his pupils in the little country school in the Liberty community. They were married Jan. 2, 1890. She never referred to him by any other name than the one she called him by "Mister Early". They lived briefly at Vienna on the Tombigbee River, in Northport, Alabama, where Nancy Mary was born, and finally in Gordo where the other two children were born. Mister Early operated (owned?) commissaries in these towns. In 1898 in Gordo his commissary burned and in fighting the fire on a cold night he contracted pneumonia and died. Mollie later married John Daniel and had one son, Hurdis Leon Daniel. Infant son born 17 Jul 1895 died at birth, child of Robert Early Kirk and Mollie Carver. OBITUARY 1899, 10 December; "The West Alabamian", 1899; Mr. R. Early Kirk died Dec 10 and was interred at the family burial ground, about eight miles south. 21080	Information of Find A Grave: Joseph Alexander died in 1726 at New Munster, in the colony of Maryland. In 1673 Joseph immigrated to Armaugh County, Ireland to gain religious freedom. In Ireland, the King, in an effort to subugate the Irish, divided the counties into parishes. He appointed Clergy of the Church of England and entrusted in them both civil and ecclestiastical authority to govern the people. The Presbyterian ministers were persecuted by the State Clergy and they retaliated by persuading their congregations to immigrate to America with them, where religious freedom was assured. In 1676 Joseph Alexander and seven of his brothers sailed from Ireland on the "Good Ship Welcome" for America. They anchored in the Delaware River, off shore from the town of New Castle. They then migrated to the established Presbyterian settlement at "New Castle", now known as Christianna Hundred, in the American colony in 1714. Lord Cecil had received from the King of England, a land grand of several thousands acres in Maryland colony. Land speculators had purchased approximately 6,000 acres of Lord Cecil's tract, one part of which was located on the Big Elk River, which the early settlers named "New Munster". Joseph Alexander and his brothers purchased land in New Munster and established the first homes of the Alexanders in America. The actual location of Joseph Alexander's first home is not known, however, a few of the houses have been restored and they are built of field stone and logs mortared with clay. The original land grant to Lord Cecil and Joseph Alexander's deeds can be seen at the Maryland Historical Library at Annapolis, Maryland. Approxiamately [sic], two hundred years later William DuPont purchased several hundred acres of the original Lord Cecil grant, including a portion of "New Munster" and built his estate "Fair Hill". He restored the old Presbyterian Church (now known as Christianna Hundred) and a few of the old houses. In the graveyard of the Church are buried many of the Alexander immigrants and their descendants.
