Scott's father, Sir William Scott, had been Comptroller of the Household to King Henry VII, and Scott's grandfather, Sir John Scott, had been Comptroller of the Household to King Edward IV. Both Scott's father and grandfather had held the offices of Constable of Dover Castle and Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Scott's father had been Marshal of Calais. Scott had a brother, Edward, and three sisters, Anne, who married Sir Edward Boughton; Katherine; and Elizabeth. As a young man Scott was knighted by the future Emperor Charles V in 1511 while serving as a senior captain, under his relative Sir Edward Poynings, with the English forces sent by King Henry VIII to aid Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Low Countries, against Charles II, Duke of Guelders. In 1512 he was elected Member of Parliament for New Romney. Scott may have participated in the French campaigns of 1512 and 1513; he was among the forces being marshaled at Calais in 1514 when negotiations for peace between England and France brought the war to a temporary halt. In 1514 and 1515 he was a commissioner for the subsidy in Sussex. In June 1520 he attended Henry VIII at the Field of Cloth of Gold. In 1522 he was in the service of George Nevill, 5th Baron Bergavenny, Constable of Dover Castle, and was placed in charge of transport when the Emperor Charles V landed at Dover on 28 May 1522. In 1523 Scott was with the English forces which invaded northern France under the Duke of Suffolk. In 1523 and 1524 he was a commissioner for the subsidy in Kent. He was Sheriff of Kent in 1527 and 1528, and a Justice of the Peace in that county from 1531 until his death. In May 1533 Scott was summoned to be a servitor at the coronation of Anne Boleyn. He died on 7 October 1533. Scott married, before 22 November 1506, Anne Pympe, daughter and heiress of Reynold Pympe, esquire, of Nettlestead, Kent, by Elizabeth Pashley, the daughter of John Pashley, esquire. Sir John Scott and Anne Pympe had five sons and seven daughters: William Scott, who died in 1536 without issue. The first Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia arrived in the 1720's primarily from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Eastern Virginia. Some were German-born or the Pennsylvania-born children of German-speaking Protestant immigrants from the Palatinate and other areas bordering the Rhine River. These were Lutheran, Reformed, or Brethren. The greatest numbers of early Augusta settlers were from the province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, or were the Pennsylvania and Maryland-born children of these Ulster Scots or Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Many early settlers took up land on the 112,000-acre tract that the colonial government granted to William Beverley, later referred to as "Beverley Manor". He was the son of Patrick Campbell, Sr. who was granted 212 acres, 21 February, 1738 in Beverley Manor,, from William Beverley; Patrick's land was from Wm. Morton, published in 1920 source for the following information: Archibald, son of William Alexander, Sr., came from near Londonderry, in 1737, and lived about ten years near Philadelphia. He was well-to-do for those days, and was a man of character, education, and influence. Archibald removed in 1747 from the bank of the Schulykill and settled on South River nearly opposite the mouth of Irish Creek. Archibald Alexander, the Captain of the Sandy Creek expedition and the first sheriff of Rockbridge County. He married his cousin, Margaret Parks. Chalkley's: Page 463 18th February, 1747. £29. Benj. BIOGRAPHY From Find A Grave Like nearly all the early settlers of Rockbridge Co, Archibald Alexander was a farmer, but living on the dangerous American frontier. He was commissioned into the military service and fought in the French and Indian Wars between 1750-1760. He captained a company of Rangers at the Sandy Creek expedition and for this service he received several thousand acres of land in Kentucky. Archibald who was an elder in Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church was married twice. In 1734 to his cousin Margaret Parks. She died in 1753, and four years later he married Jane McClure who was also Irish born. He had seven children by the first marriage and eight by the second. Archibald Alexander was born on 4 Feb 1708 in Ulster. His will was probated on 1 Feb 1780 in Rockbridge, Co., VA, so he died prior to this date. He married twice. First to his cousin Margaret Parks (1708-1753, the daughter of Joseph Parks) on 31 Dec 1734 in Ireland and second, to Jane McClure in 1757 in Augusta Co., Virginia. With Margaret (1708 - 1753), he had 5 known children: Elizabeth, William, Phoebe, Jane and jean.
