13026	FATHER'S OBITUARY Provided by Morrison Funeral Home, 700 Oak Street, Graham, TX 76450 Zohn Solomon Milam September 2, 1924 - January 14, 2011 Zohn Milam, 86, passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 at his home in Graham. Funeral services are scheduled Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Eastside Church of Christ with Dorman Holub, minister, Larry Pratt of Eliasville, and Dick Stovall of Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home. Mr. Milam was born September 2, 1924 in Eliasville, Texas to the late E.B. "Kid" and Ethel (Whitmire) Milam. Zohn grew up in Eliasville and attended SMU in Dallas where he played football and ran track for the Mustangs. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was involved in the liberation of Dachau, Germany in 1945. Zohn was stationed at Fort Ord, California during the Korean War where he was appointed to organize a football team which later was known as the Fort Ord Warriors. He married Jerrye Campbell March 5, 1958 in Eliasville. He returned to Graham and began a teaching and coaching career in the Graham and Eliasville schools. He was principal of Graham Jr. High School and Graham High School before retiring in 1986. Zohn served on the GISD school board from 1989 to 1995 and was named Citizen of Year in 2005 by the Graham Chamber of Commerce. After retirement from GISD he was a probation officer for Young County and continued to farm and ranch in the Eliasville area. Survivors include; wife, Jerrye Milam of Graham; daughter, Pam Stroud and husband Jay of Irving; son, Kyle Milam and wife Rhnea of Graham; sister, Charlotte Hutcheson and husband George of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Kayla and Jerid Morgan, Kurt Milam, Kara and Clint Felts, and Chris and Michelle Duke; two great grandchildren, Cade and Landry Duke; also surviving former son-in-law Owen Duke. This past month we lost one of our Shrine ladies. While it seems there are those put on this earth to worry their fellow men, cause upheaval and chaos, there are those few that add warmth and understanding. A small lady with a bit heart, add a great personality, a vibrant smile, charm, humor and a wonderful hostess and you have a lady ten foot tall. What a pity there are not more of these rare persons placed on this good earth to add to our comfort and enjoyment. For those who were friends, we should consider ourselves most fortunate to have known and shared time with her. Our sorrow goes to Andy Wilkins on the loss of his mate, Florence for some 61 years. He resided in James City and Warwick counties. He was an officer of the British army of occupation. He and his wife, Elizabeth Austin Filmer, daughter, son, cook and nephew Samuel, came to Virginia on ship "John & Ambrose" that embarked on 13 Mar 1652, off of Gravesend (northwest of Maidstone at the mouth of the Thames River and east of London). Upon arriving in Virginia, he moved to Mulberry Island where he had a plantation called "Laus Deo". Henry referred to himself as "of Mulberry Island in Virginia, Gentleman" in an August 27, 1664 letter in the Kent Archives Office. "Laus Deo" was located in or near Felker Field, about where the site of the first heliopad ever built in the U. S. is now located at Fort Eustis. The plantation adjoined the land of his friend Emmanuel Wills, which gave Henry access to Wills' Mulberry Island Pier. After living on Mulberry Island for eighteen years, Henry died in 1671, (his will is dated 21 Feb 1671), and was buried on Mulberry Island, Warwick County, Virginia, either on his plantation or in one of the two churches on the Island. It was the property of a gentry family, the Scotts. The first known resident was Sir John Scott (born 1436), who married Caroline Carter. From the beginning of the fourteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, the Scotts, who were the descendants of the Baliols, were influential in Kent. Scott's Hall was the center of the dynasty and there was a time when one could ride from Scot's Hall to London without leaving Scott Property, a journey of over fifty miles. During the reign of Elizabeth I, it was described as one of the most splendid houses in Kent. Samuel Pepys was a regular visitor in the seventeenth century. The house is at OS Grid Ref TR079392.
