This new church was the second largest in medieval London. The medieval church was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Reconstruction was assigned to Wren, who oversaw a decades long-programme that rebuilt St. Paul's Cathedral and approximately 50 parish churches in the fire zone. Galleries stood over the north and south aisles, built at special request of the officers of Christ's Hospital as seating for the school's students. [Note: Humphrey Hill attended school at Christ Church, indicating a family association with this church.] The Christ's Hospital boys continued to attend services, sitting in the galleries. According to the pre-war guide book to the church, they included the young Samuel Coleridge and Charles Lamb. Sixth Form boys tasked with maintaining order sat in special seats placed over those of the younger students. A few boys carved initials in the woodwork. It participated in many battles of the army from Chickamauga to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations, and fought in North Carolina. On April 9, 1865, it merged into the 54th Battalion Virginia Infantry. He was mentioned in his father, Joseph Tate's estate papers, on May 22, 1843, William Tate with John W. Owens and Elisha Tate, a third part. William Tate is indebted to Elisha Tate admin. of the Joseph Tate estate. On March 22, 1844 he sold to John W. Owens the tract of land his father Joseph lived on in his lifetime, 177 acres to John W. Owens, witnessed by John Fugate, John Tate and all three signed the deed. His wife, Jane (Turner) Tate died on May 8, 1865. Their family consisted of five children, 2 died in infancy, George was killed at Decaturville on November 30, 1877, John L and James H." After his wife, Jane died, when she was only 45 years old, (and was buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Warren County) Elan moved to Decatur County in 1870. It is assumed that Elan and his family went and lived in Decatur County because Elizabeth (James second wife) went there to live with the Bost family in her later years. He died leaving two sons and four grand children, the oldest was an orphaned girl less than four years old. In 1884, he went to Perryville, TN and engaged in business there until May 6, 1885, when he lost a large part of his property by fire. He then returned to Decaturville. James was born in Dekalb County, September 30, 1855 and married Emma Jones, daughter of Dr. T. W. Jones of Decaturville, on December 21, 1875. Tate was born on December 7, 1849, in Warren County, TN and enlisted in Forrest's Confederate Cavalry in 1864. He returned to Warren County and farmed until 1869, when he moved to Oak Grove, Decatur County. The following year he came to Decaturville where he followed merchandising. On September 20, 1871, he married Martha J. Welch, daughter of Henry Welch. They were the parents of 7 children: Mary, Maggie,William H. Carrie, B., Anna Jane, John Elmer, and Grover Cleveland." John, George and Martha's graves are unmarked. George was murdered in Decaturville on December 1, 1876 (Goodspeed's History says November 30, 1877 and used here). The indications are that Martha had preceded him in death. Possibly at the birth of Mattie on February 3, 1876. The records of Grov Liles trial and conviction for George's murder were lost in the Decatur County courthouse fire of 1926 so more positive information is lost. Jane, Grover, and Bobby died before Elan H., and the three surviving sons moved to Decatur County, TN in 1870. I find no records or tombstones for Grover and Bobby. Jane is buried in Warren County, TN, near its border with Grundy County. Elan H. Tate was living with his son, John Lee. At Elan's death, Elan's papers passed through son John Lee's family ownership into the hands of Martha Angie Raspbury of Hohenwald, TN. John Tate was born about 1783 in Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain near Lebanon which later became Russell County, VA. He was mentioned in the will of his father Robert Tate, on July 29, 1796 and signed with his heirs in 1816. He was given the parcel of land southwest of Mill Dam to Ovelton's Road. On February 20, 1801, John Tate purchased from John Wood of Russell County, VA for 25 pounds, 100 acres on Big Moccasin Creek granted to John Wood by Patent on January 1, 1800 adj. John Johnson and a cliff of Moccasin Creek. On July 7, 1807, John Tate and his wife, Leodicie (Dicey) sold 100 acres to Ephraim Johnson of Sullivan County, TN. Also on that same day, John and Dicey completed another transaction with Mary Hogg, believed to be Dicey's mother. Land was assigned to Dicey Hogg by Henry Creek or Cook, before her marriage to John Tate. Signature Leodicie Tate. It is thought they married about that time. On August 6, 1806, John Tate, James, Joseph and Robert Tate signed a petition to have a new County formed. John settled with his brother Alexander on Dry Creek, Warren County, TN and apparently lived there the remainder of his life. On February 13, 1812, Vincent Hobbs of Lincoln County, TN sold to John Tate of Warren County, TN, land on Collins River, witnessed by James Clendenon, and on October 3, 1818, John Tate of Warren County, TN sold to John Tate, land on Collins River witnessed by Alexander Tate. On July 4, 1841, a notation for Edward Hoge, dec'd estate, by James Davidson and Hood Tate. (They were probably Dicey's people.) The only John Tate listed in Warren County, TN in 1820 is over 45 with a large family, 5 sons and 6 daughters; wife 26-45. In 1830 there were 4 sons and as many daughters. In 1845, he had died intestate, a farmer who left few records. He had eleven children. The only children identified are those shown on the 1850 Census of Warren County, TN. ---------------------- James Striegel Tate Papers, Tennessee State Library and Archives 1742 - 1980 John Tate of Russell County, Virginia was not on the tax rolls of Russell Connie after 1795. John and Dicey sold their Virginia lands between July 1807 and October 1809. Two of Robert Tate's sons, John and Robert Jr., were witnesses to his will and had to return to Virginia to prove the will for probate. The other heirs also appear to have returned to Virginia to settle the estate. The earliest settlement in Warren County was at the junction of Hills Creek and Collins River near present-day Irvine college. Alexander and John lived there on Dry Creek which is a tributary to Hills Creek. They remained residents of Warren County. John died intestate in 1845 in Warren County. Very little is known of him or his progeny. His widow, Dicey (Leodicia Hogg Tate) survived him. She was made administrator in October, 1845. John Tate to R. M. Stepp, Trustee, to secure payment of $120.00 to James Walker and Sterling Savage mentions Dicy Tate as being the widow of John Tate when the land was sold by said Trustee on January 18, 1847. John Tate died between March 1844 and January 1847. This is the place now known as the David Coppinger or Levi Scott place and was entered by Vincent Hubbs. R. M. Stepp sold this to Jacob Woodlee Sr., January 18, 1847 containing 80 acres. Warren County, TN Will Book 2 Page120-121. 1st Monday in October, 1845. It appears to the Court that John Tate, late a citizen of Warren County is dead, having made no will. His residence at time of death was said county. Updike, 1984 On August 1844, John Tate and his wife, Jane, with his brothers Robert C. and his wife Nancy; Elish and wife, Eliza; and William Tate met and sold 170 acres of land on which their father, Joseph Tate (deceased) lived. After 1844, John Tate with his family moved from Russell County, VA to Powell's Valley, VA in what was then a part of Lee County, now a part of Wise County, VA where he settled. He was pastor of the "Three Forks Baptist Church", which was founded in the year of 1798. He was pastor from February 1853 to January 1855 and from March 1857 to October 1873. He, as an elder of the church, together with Deacons Thomas Wells, Jeremiah Wells and Isaac Willis, at the request of the Toms Creek Baptist Church, was appointed to help organize a church at the Big Glades, now the town of Wise, on the first Monday in May, 1847. He was active in church affairs, and public affairs of the county and was elected and served as constable in the Richmond Township for two terms, from 1860 to 1864. He married again on December 25, 1858 in Dekalb County, AL Julia Ann Asbury Shankles, born December 30, 1838 in AL. She was probably a widow. She died on February 7, 1894 in Comanche County, TX. Both are buried in board Church Methodist Cemetery. They appeared in 1879 Dekalb County, AL Census, but in 1871 they had moved to near Newburg, Comanche County, TX Robert Hood Tate moved to Texas after 1870 by wagon train with 3 wagons and $500.00 in gold tied up in a rag.
