12406	Crossed the plains at age nine with his parents Adam and Catherine to reach Oregon. After his father's death, William remained with his mother on a farm and assisted on the farm. In 1859 he moved to Walla Walla to start in the business world where he was successfully engaged in farming and in the raising of livestock. In 1884 he moved to Whitman County and his success as a cattle man and a farmer continued and he acquired fifteen hundred acres of valuable land. He lived his retirement years in Waitsburg. 1870 Washington Territory Census, Waitsburg Township lists William, age 33, farmer, Elizabeth, age 22. Living on their farm is Francis Dice, farmhand. Found in a scrapbook, with the date of Jan 31, 1917...WILLIAM FUDGE IS DEAD. Oregon Pioneer of Early Forties dies at Walla Walla..Walla Walla, Wash., Jan 30 - (Special) - William Fudge, prominent valley pioneer of 1859 and an Oregon pioneer of the early '40's died here today in his 80th year. His father and the family started across the plains by ox team with an immigrant train of 300 teams. The trip proved a horrible one, as some of the party became separated from the main train and were set upon by Indians and massacred. The family settled near Dallas, in Polk County. During the gold excitement in California, his father went there and died. Adam Fudge had brought his family from Illinois with the Whitikers and McGhees, pioneers, and settled near the Tucannon River. He is survived by his wife. There are no children. The Allen Horticultural Center Dedicated in memory of Beatrice Doe Allen in 1977. She was the daughter of Stephen G. Allen (1905-1986) and his wife, Elizabeth B. Allen (1907-1990) of Needham, MA. The Allens were longtime contributors to Crotched Mountain. The greenhouse provides a variety of vocational opportunities for Crotched Mountain students and was designed to be a model of accessibility. The height of the work tables can be adjusted to easily accommodate wheelchairs, and the cement pathways are sufficiently wide to permit easy maneuvering and a barrier free learning and work area. Daniel Conrad Harman as a son of Henry Harman, Sr., (the same who with his sons, George and Matthias had the fight with the Indians in 1789) and his wife Anna Wilborn. Daniel was born on Abbott's Creek, in Rowan Co., NC, on June or January 26th, 1760. In a land lawsuit in the High Court of Chancery, Augusta Co., VA, Wynn vs Inglish heirs, Henry Harman, Sr., makes a statement in his deposition, "that one of his sons, Daniel, was killed by the Indians." In the same lawsuit Christopher Marrs, says: "Henry Harman, Sr., had one of his sons killed, scalped and massacreed by the Indians in the attempt of settling the land now in dispute, who left a wife and 4 young children." Pendleton in his History of Tazewell County, page 465, states: 'Daniel Harman left his house, on the head of Clinch, on a fine morning in the fall of 1791, for the purpose of killing a deer. Where he went for that purpose is not known, but having done so, he started for home with the deer fastened to the cantle of his saddle. Harman was a great hunter, and owned a choice rifle, and the superior structure of its triggers which were, as usual, of the double kind. So strong was the spring of these that when sprung, the noise might be heard for a considerable distance. He was riding a large horse, fleet, and spirited, and had gotten within a mile of home, and was passing through a bottom, near the present residence, and on the lands of Mr. William O. George, when suddenly a party of Indians sprang from behind a log, and fired on him. He was unhurt and putting spurs to his horse away he went through the heavy timber, forgetting all other danger, in his precarious situation. 12429	Danny Lee Altizer, 44, of 690 Virginia Avenue in Richlands, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Richlands, and was a son of Ivan Scott Altizer of Richlands and the late Janet Louise Mitchell Altizer. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a former employee of Bob's East End Shell and Logan Corporation. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ivan Blain Altizer. His survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Mrs. Cora Marie Martin Altizer, two daughters, Mrs. Rachel L. Altizer of Rock Hill, SC and Ms. Sarah M. Altizer of the home, one sister, Mrs. Nancy Altizer Coleman and her husband Jeffrey, of Green River, WY, one brother, William Douglas Altizer of Cedar Bluff, VA, mother-in-law, Mrs. Rachel Martin of Richlands, one special nephew, T. J. Sparks of Richlands, several nieces, nephews, step-nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 AM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Jerry Casey officiating. Pallbearers will be Ernest Gross, Jimmy Shelton, Joey Webb, Mike Plaster, Robin Roberts, and Ronnie 'Pete' Cook. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA. Robert Tate Sr. received a land grant of 174 acres in Fincastle, County, VA on December 13, 1774 on Big Moccasin Creek, North Fork of Holston River. On April 20, 1784 he received a land patent of 250 acres in Washington County, VA on both sides of Big Moccasin Creek on a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River some three miles from Col. John Tate. In 1781 he and his brother, John swore allegiance to the United States in Washington County, VA. In 1781. In Nov. 1781, John Tate, Robert Tate, William Huston and John Wood were appointed to appraise the estate of Francis Fugate deceased, who was killed by a fall from his horse. The following legal petition was filed in 1785 and signed by several Tates. This is a petition asking the House of Delegates of VA to place a line "fixed along Clinch Mountain and Montgomery line to the Carolina line" to separate them from Washington Co. These inhabitants include those of Clinch River, Moccasin Creek, Powels Valley, north branch of Holstein River, and "others." Dated Dec. 9, 1785. Washington Co., VA, is in the far southern section of VA, just before the border into TN and not far from NC. Tate letter; April 1783 to View Road; May 1786 Robert Appointed Ensign or 2nd Lieutenant of Militia; April 1787 Appointed Full Lieutenant. Robert Tate was a contemporary with and associated in many court affairs with Col. John Tate. Robert Tate's will did not mention that most of his children were minors, but they were. On October 10, 1816, John Tate and wife Dicey, James Tate and wife Ruth, Robert Tate and wife Susannah, Alexander Tate and wife Delilah, Aaron Tate and wife Betsey and Marady Price and wife Polly, all of Warren County, TN, of the first part to Joseph Tate of Russell County, VA, the home place. The same land this Robert Tate acquired in 1774 and 1784, adjacent to Richard Davis and Hullams, witnessed by John Rodgers and Reuben Berryman. It begins near Hansonville and is a long valley extending to near Big Moccasin Gap in Scott County, VA. The Valley is paralleled by Clinch Mountain on the South and Moccasin Ridge on the North. Moccasin Valley adjoins Washington County, VA at the top of Clinch Mountain and Scott County, VA to the South. Big Moccasin Creek extends the entire length of the valley flowing into the north fork of the Holston River near Big Moccasin Gap. The story is told that early settlers coming through the valley found Indian moccasin footprints in the soft mud on the banks of the creek. This, the name Moccasin Creek and later Moccasin Valley. Robert Tate, who, resided in Washington County, VA, assisted in establishing independence while acting in the capacity of a Surveyor of the Road and as a member of a Jury, qualifying him for service as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. He was a Surveyor of the Road from May 14, 1781 until April 16, 1783. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has a concise application on Robert Tate and list all of his sources regarding his service. My own belief is that a number of the heirs were in Tennessee looking for place to which they would migrate. At some date, after February 3, 1807, Robert's widow, Mary and all their children, except Joseph, moved to Warren County, Tennessee. They were all listed on the tax rolls of Warren County TN for the year 1812. On October 14, 1816, all of the children sold their inherited interest in 177 acres of land to their brother Joseph, who stayed on the family home place in Virginia. Their mother relinquished her dower rights on the same date. This action is the last record we have a Polly Tate and her husband, Meredith Price and of Mary Tate, their mother. The remaining children, Alexander, Aaron, John, James and Robert (H.)
