12321	Col. Adam Alexander was a large landowner, a churchman, a patriot and a soldier. He was justice of the peace and a member of the county court, being known as "Justice Alexander". He was captain of a company of militia and took several conferences concerning Indian raids. He was a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of independence and a colonel of the Minute Men during the Revolutionary War. He and his wife, Mary Shelby, were parents of six children. (An Alexander Family, Our Alexander Heritage (1978) by Clarence D. Alexander. Col. Adam Alexander settled in what is known as Clear Creek neighborhood, North Carolina where his family worshiped at Rock Springs Church. He was a patriot and soldier. His family worshiped at Rock Springs Church. Both Col. At the conclusion he wrote: ?The foregoing was copied Aug. 10, 1855, by John Harris (then resident in Philadelphia) from two separate half sheets of cap paper, in the handwriting of his father, James Harris, in the possession of Mrs. Thomazin Potter, a granddaughter of James Harris. John Harris, the copyist of the foregoing, born Dec. 31st, 1792, was the son of James Harris, who was the son of John Harris who was the son of James Harris by his second wife, Janet McClure), who was the son of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas. The antecedent probability that this document is perfectly trustworthy has been confirmed by all subsequent investigations (excepting in regard to William Harris2 and his wife-see Appendix XVIII), and the writer considers it fortunate that he has had such a record to guide his researches. Edward [Sr.] and Charles Harris, being dissenters, were driven from Ayrshire, in Scotland, at the time of the persecution of the Protestants In the reign of Charles II, or of his successor, James. They settled in County Donegal, near Rapho, Ireland. They were possessed of a valuable estate in Scotland, which was lost on account of their abandoning it. Edward [Sr.] was married to Miss Flora Douglas, of the famous family of that name, who resided near the borders of England. He had sons: Edward [Jr.], Robert and James. 12329	Colonel Humphrey Hill, son of Thomas and Edith (Bell) Hill, of London, England, was born in 1706, and was a "blue coat" boy of Christ Church Hospital school, where the record of his matriculation is still preserved. This school was been in existence for 350 years with a royal charter from King Charles II and has continued to enjoy royal patronage. The school is best known for the Tudor uniform: long blue coat, knee-breeches, yellow socks, and bands at the neck for boys. The nickname "Blue-coat School" comes from the blue coats worn by the students, however, the nickname used within the school community itself is "Housey" and the long coat is called a "housey coat". Christ's Hospital (not a hospital in the contemporary sense) was established in 1553 for the benefit of orphaned children or those made homeless by impecunious parents. If they were legitimate children of free men of the City of London, over four years of age and free from obvious infirmity, they were to be educated and prepared either for entrance to a university or apprenticeship to a trade. It's likely Humphrey was abandoned by his father at this orphanage after his mother, Edith's death. His uncle Humphrey Bell later rescued him and sent him to Virginia to handle Bell-family business interests. He served a 7 year apprenticeship in London with his uncle. And his brother Thomas Hill, lived in Spotsylvania County. Humphrey settled first at Hobbe's Hold (now Tappahannock) as a tobacco factor. Family home was named Hillsboro. It is still standing as of 1950 and is owned by one of his descendants, William Todd Henley. Humphrey Hill was one of the guardians of Carter Braxton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Indenpendence. He owned ships that brought good from all parts of the Atlantic. Records show that he brought direct from Africa one vessel loaded with 400 slaves, which he indicated few died in transit and all were in remarkably good condition. Spradley Here for the First Time in Nearly 40 Years: Former Resident Relates Experience of "Carpetbagger" Days, Has Not Seen Railroad Train Since He Left Stephen A. Spradley, of Pike County, who is making his first visit to this city in thirty-eight years, gave a vivid picture of conditions as they existed at that time. "The last time I was in the city", said Mr. Spradley, "was October, 1875. At that time Montgomery had not recovered from the effects of the war, and everything was chaos and confusion.The carpetbaggers were in control and everything was in bad shape. I drove forty-five miles to Montgomery to sell a load of produce, and it took me five days to make the trip with a yoke and oxen." "I remember that sweet potatoes brought $3.25 a bushel in greenback money, Greenbacks at that time was worth about one-half of their face value. Anyone who had any gold or silver money kept it secreted, and this, added to the hardships of the times as it was difficult to trade your paper money for produce or provisions. I remember distinctly having to give $25 in greenbacks for $10.00 worth of food. This money was later redeemed at face value. "When George S. Houston was elected governor of the state he had a law passed to tax all money that was stored away, and in this way more gold and silver was put into circulation." "The only railroad was the L & N and at that time they burned wood only. I have never seen a railroad since." Mr. Spradley was greatly surprised to learn that there were buildings over six stories high now in Montgomery. "At that time the only building of six stories was the old Madison Hotel", he said. When speaking of the outrages committed by the carpetbaggers, Mr. Spradley's eyes flashed and his face grew red. "While they were not in power long, it was awful while it lasted," he declared. "...the thieves and crooks from the north came down here and we reelected to office. ... and you can see what the result was. Montgomery is a fine place now and I am sorry to have to leave it so soon." Mr. Spradley is visiting his daughter at 15 Brassel Street while here. OBITUARY Stephen A. Spradley died at five o;'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. F. Porath on Williams St. He was born in 1849 in Crenshaw County and moved to Pike County in 1897. He was perhaps the oldest member of the Antioch Church of Christ in Pike County, having been a member about 50 years. He was preceded to the grave by his wife, and an infant many years ago. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs J. J. Rushing, Mrs. G. F. Porath, Mrs. J. D. Youngblood and Mrs. Jack Coll, of Baton Rouge, LA., son J. K. Spradley, three brothers, C. T.Spradley, John Spradley and W. P. Spradley, and a number of other relatives who mourn his death. The funeral services will be conducted at Antioch Church at Shellhorn, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. W. T. Grider assisted by Rev. W. E.
