Born Feb. 19, 1889 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Ira Franklin Sterrett adn Isabel Dunlap MacKey Sterrett. Mr. Sterrett was a member of the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and served as elder and elder emeritus in the church for 63 years. He was one of the organizers and past president of the Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative. Mr. Sterrett was a former dairy farmer. Mr. Sterrett developed the Meadowview subdivision. He was chairman of the Rockbridge County Planning Commission from Jan.1 1959 to Jan. 1 1962. A former Rotarian, he was past president of the Rockbridge Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Surviving are two sons, John D. Sterrett, Jr. of Wytheville and James Robert Sterrett of Hampton; a sister Mrs. Mattie Reid Parkins of Newark, Del; five grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. The Rev. John Stanley and the Rev. William Ramkey will conduct a funeral service tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Timber Ridge "Old Stone" Presbyterian Church. Mr. Sterrett was born in Lexington, Virginia on November 10, 1925, the son of the late Madison McClung Sterrett, Sr. and Edna Watkins Morton Sterrett. He moved with his family to Brownsburg when he was two years old, and graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1943. Mr. Sterrett was a life-long farmer. He and his father owned and operated M. M. Sterrett & Son Dairy, and he was an active member of the Virginia State Dairymen's Association. When Sterrett's Dairy closed in 1986, Mr. Sterrett continued as a beef cattle farmer until his retirement. In 2007, he was presented with the Conservationist of the Year Award by the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District for his many years of conservation practices such as strip cropping, crop rotations, winter cover crops, crop residue management, tree planting on steeper acreages, and fencing to protect water sources and woodlands. Mr. Sterrett was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine where he had served as an Elder, Clerk of Session, and Trustee. He sang in the New Providence choir for more than 65 years. He was also very active in the community. Mr. Sterrett served on the Board of Directors at the Rockbridge Farmers Co-op for 30 years, including nine years as Chairman of the Board. For many years, he was on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Rockbridge, and served as Chairman of the Board for a period of ten years through the bank's merger with One Valley Bank and later BB&T. He was a long-time member of the Brownsburg Ruritan Club, and received his 65-year pin in 2009. Mr. Sterrett served several terms as a Director of the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District. Mr. Sterrett was preceded in death by his first wife, Annamarye Lackey Sterrett. He is survived by his second wife, Louise Martin Doyle Sterrett; two daughters, Isabelle Chewning (and her husband Barry) of Raphine, and Agnes Sterrett of Fairfax, VA; one sister, Mary Lipscomb of Harrisonburg, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Saturday, March 2 at New Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Keith Cornfield officiating. More than likely he was from the Rhineland-Palatinate area of Germany. There were major groups of poor Palatines,then refugees in England, passage paid for by Queen Anne to reduce the number of impoverished families who had taken refuge in London. In 1710 the English used ten ships to transport nearly 3,000 Germans to the colony of New York. Many died en route, as they had been weakened by disease. New Bern, North Carolina is one of the earliest North Carolina colonies settled in 1710 by about 400 Palatines (650 left Germany, but about half died in passage) and 100 Swiss. This venture was orchestrated by the Swiss-born Christoph von Graffenried after purchasing more than 19,000 acres from the British Proprietors of the Carolinas. Like indentured servants they were required to work off their passage. Christopher, his father Hans and family were probably among the later waves of Patalinate immigrants. Christopher was a planter, rope maker and ferry keeper. Settled first on the North Side of the Trent River, Craven County, North Carolina, deeds 1741and 1744. Abandoned Craven County lands and moved to Cumberland County with a Cumberland grant in 1755. Gave his daughter 100 acres of that land. The last document on him was a sale of land on 28 Jul1772. This area became Johnston, then Dobbs and in 1779, Wayne County. He purchased in 1769 150 acres on Bear Creek and in 1770 he received another 100 acres on Bear Creek. In 1771 Simon was granted land on Thunder Swamp in lower Wayne Co, (then Dobbs) and he moved there. He kept his land in the northern parts of Dobbs County. He eventually owned over 500 acres of land on Thunder Swamp and 350 acres in the upper part of the county. He deeded much of it to his sons, to give them a start in life. With almost a 1,000 acres in his estate, Simon Flowers was one of the largest early planters in what became Wayne County. He married Sarah, his first wife. Certificates 89,501 to 91,938 89781. Flowers, William William Flowers, Jesse Flowers, and their elder brother, John Flowers, served in the militia during the Revolution. In April, 1781 Lord Cornwallis and his huge army came out of their winter quarters in Wilmington and marched north toward Virginia. they traveled along old roadways through New Hanover and Duplin counties. On May 3, 1781, they crossed the Goshen Swamp at Holley's Mill (later Flowery Dale Plantation) and entered Wayne County. The local militia, including John and William Flowers, fought a rear-guard action. Lord Cornwallis, commanded 1,600 troops, four cannon, two boats on carriages and the British Legion under Colonel Banastre Tarleton. As the army approached the Bridge over Thunder Swamp, Clarissa Harrel Flowers was left with her two children. She was at the home of her parents, Samuel and Ann Harrell at Thunder Swamp Bridge. 12033	CENSUS RECORDS OBITUARY Anchorage Daily News; 22 July 1993 Former Anchorage resident Clarence C. "Scotty" Tate, 70, died of heart failure July 18 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. A funeral was held at Demaray's Gooding Chapel in Gooding, Idaho. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Tate was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Kimberly, Idaho, the son of Ernest and Lou Vernia Savage Tate. He attended school in Kimberly and Gooding. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. After the war, he became a chef and worked at various restaurants on the West Coast and in Las Vegas as an executive chef. In 1965, he moved to Alaska, where he worked as an executive chef in Fairbanks, Juneau and Anchorage, for hospitals and government agencies. He later managed food service camps for the trans-Alaskan pipeline. He married Phyllis Staats Hill in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 21, 1969. From 1977 to 1985, he served as president and business manager of the Culinary Union in Anchorage. In 1985, he returned to Gooding to retire and enjoy hunting and fishing. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and Gooding Elks Lodge #1745, and held memberships in various culinary societies. During winter months, he enjoyed feeding bread to the ducks and geese in the Hagerman Valley and lived his life to the fullest, according to his family. Mr. Tate is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Gooding; a son, Michael of Anchorage; two stepsons, Dennis Hill of Everett, Wash., and Hugh Hill of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; a sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Lum Edwards of Gooding; two brothers, Raymond of Sun City, Ariz., and Dennis and his wife, Blanche, of Missoula, Mont.; and five grandchildren, Melissa of Anchorage, and Jason, Justin, Eric and Kristi Hill of Fort Huachuca. 12035	CENSUS RECORDS OBITUARY Mrs. Nellie Jane Street McGlothlin, age 95, of Rowe, Virginia, passed away Thursday (April 12, 2012) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born February 2, 1917 in Skeggs, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Tiny Fletcher Street. A lifelong resident of the Rowe area, she was a member of Rowe Pentecostal Church and Rowe Senior Citizens. She enjoyed spending her time quilting, crocheting, and cooking. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edd Lewis McGlothlin, three sons, Clayton McGlothlin, Dors McGlothlin, and Fain McGlothlin, one daughter, Loretta Byrd, one granddaughter, Ivy Nicole Byrd, eight sisters, and one brother. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include two sons, Leon McGlothlin and wife, Sheri of Manassas, Virginia and Ronnie McGlothlin and wife, Rita of Rowe; two daughters, Shirley Altizer and husband, Eugene of Abingdon and Fayrene Coxton of Dumfries, Virginia; twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Leonard Meadows officiating. The stock was of small issue, twenty-five dollars per share. Washington, Sullivan, Greene and Jefferson counties took fifty thousand each; I do not know the amount subscribed by Knox County. In 1868 some of our own people--W. R. Callaway, Charles McGhee, Capt. Joseph Jaques, E. J. Sanford and others--made some arrangement with the state to take over the indebtedness caused by the issuing of its bonds. For the benefit of the roads, the price paid the state was never revealed. Then came the consolidation of the two roads in 1869 with Captain Jaques and Maj. R. C. Jackson as active managers, and Newton Bogar, train master. FLYOD, Commanding Virginia State Line: GENERAL: I send with this an extract from a letter written by Colonel Hugh McClung, of Knoxville, to Captain [Joseph] Jaques, at Saltville, giving information of an intended movement of the enemy's cavalry, 10,000 strong, on the railroad, and especially for the destruction of the salt-works. I have also a report from Colonel [John] McCausland, at Princeton, in Mercer Country, that it is thought the enemy will very son make these cavalry raids on a large scale from the Kanawha-one by Lewisburg, one by Pack's Ferry, and one by Coal River, through Boone to Tazewell County, the latter directed chiefly, I suppose, against the salt-works. Colonel McClung's informant must be mistaken as to the number of cavalry the enemy proposes to send. I send it to you, however, for what it is worth. It would be well to have a few defensive works. Block-houses for artillery and infantry would be best, on commanding points near the salt-works. The employes of the works could, if organized and armed, use them with good effect in defending the works. But I have no force at present to construct the works. If you will furnish the labor, I will send an engineer to locate and superintend the construction of the works. The transfer of Marshall's command and the counties of Washington, Russell, Buchanan, Wise, Scott, and Lee to the Department of East Tennessee, embarrasses me somewhat as regards the salt-works. The most practicable approaches to the works are, I think, through Wise and Buchanan, and they are not in my department, and the salt-works themselves are directly on the boundary line between the two departments. An act approved 1861 Nov. 11, "An Act to encourage the Manufacture of Salt in Ala.," authorized the Governor to lease state salt lands and to contract for the production of salt. Included are an 1861 Dec. contract leasing the State Salt Springs in Clarke County to John P. Figh for a period of ten years; an 1862 July contract with L.W. McClung and Capt. Joseph Jaques of Knoxville, Tenn., to produce salt for the Ala. Salt Manufacturing Company, a Macon Co., Ala. consortium composed of David Clopton, Absalom A. Barton, Cullen A. Battle, A.J. Battle, Wylie W. Mason, George W. Campbell, and N.S. Graham, to manufacture salt in Saltville, Va.; and a contract with Daniel McLeod and Samuel W. "Old bridge players never die; they just lose their finesse." Amma June Glenn was born on June 3, 1929, the year of the Great Depression, to Denver C. and Magdalene Catherine Glenn of Ten Davis, ID. They were the children of Idaho pioneers, immigrants who moved to America when times were hard in their countries. Amma June graduated from Parma High School in 1947 and attended the College of Idaho from 1948 through 1950. She quit to marry Glenn E. Ward, a returning W.W. II veteran who was a star football and baseball player at the C of I. They moved to Adrian where he taught history and coached football and later baseball. In 1951, Amma June, now just June, gave birth to a daughter, Carolyn Sue. In 1956, a son, Stuart Alan, was born. June was a physical education teacher for a year, then a library aide at the high school in Adrian. In 1977, June and Glenn moved to Ontario where June was a library aide at May Roberts Elementary. She later worked at the Malheur Mental Health Center until retirement. In 1985, she founded the Ontario bridge club because she had so many friends asking how to play duplicate bridge. The club started modestly with about three tables and stayed small until 1990 when the club grew, sponsored tournaments, and spawned a Monday Bridge Club which June also ran with great success." Her hard work, intelligence, and dedication paid off with her achievement of Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League. She never craved the gold of jewelers, just the gold points of the ACBL. When she wasn´t looking for it, she also found gold in bridge and life partner, Bob Eisenbarth, and on Feb. 9, 1993, he led diamonds, and she returned hearts. They were married in Aransas County, TX, although they made their primary home in Ontario. With Bob, June got the bonus of a second family, and in recent years, she had the joy of becoming a grandmother to her son's children and Bob's grandchildren and great-grandchild, as well. June's vivid blue eyes always twinkled with humor. She loved to laugh, she loved to read, she inspired her daughter to love poetry as much as she did, she encouraged her children to excel in academics and athletics, she followed all of her son´s sports activities, she made time for family and friends, and was the first to respond in times of crisis with a ready smile and her famous peanut brittle. Last week, post surgery, June slipped into unconsciousness, never to recover. Medical tests determined that she had suffered a massive heart attack and stroke. She was disheartened at the physical infirmity which had occurred after a fall, and weakened by the pain, so perhaps her heart broke. We know that ours have with her loss. June is survived by husband, Bob Eisenbarth of Ontario, OR; daughter, Carolyn Wolfe of Boise, ID; son, Stuart Ward and his wife Denise and two grandchildren of Auburn, WA; June's brother, Denver Lynn Glenn, Jr. of Boise, ID; and sister, Nova Jane Glenn of Eugene, OR; first husband Glenn Ward of Caldwell, ID; and by friends, other relatives, and bridge partners too numerous to mention, but you know who you are. A memorial service for June is Sept. 12, 2006 at Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel, Ontario, OR. Private family internment will be at a later date at Lower Boise Cemetery, Parma, ID.
