He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in forestry. He then founded Dover Forestry Co. and worked as a consultant for 15 years. He had been an organic farmer in Bedford and Rockbridge counties for 30 years. He founded Countryside Natural Products in 1997 and was active in the Virginia Biological Farmers Association and the Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association. He was also active in the Virginia Conservative Party and was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1964. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton and was a Gideon. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Laine Putney; three sons, Reid Taylor Putney of Dayton Ohio, Stephen Barrett Putney of Lynchburg and Douglas Laine Putney of Dayton, Va.; three sisters; one brother; and six grandchildren. A memorial service was conducted Friday, April 4, at Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton by the Rev. Randy Spencer and the Rev. Stephen B. Putney. Burial was in Augusta Memorial Park in Fishersville. Memorial contributions may be made to East Augusta Gideon Camp, P.O. Box 715, Waynesboro, VA 22980 or Augusta Medical Center Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939. He was born in Scott County, Va., and was a decorated Army veteran of World War II. A former resident of Las Vegas, he was a journalist and a former night editor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He is survived by his sons, Robert Jr., Joseph and David; daughter, Elizabeth; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be in Oregon. Mr. Pannell was born in 1921 to Robert Emmett and Gaynell Whitaker Pannell in Scott County, Va. He attended school in Strasburg and at the Tennessee Military Institute. He served in the Army during World War II and married Ann Allen Birdwell. He pitched in the minor leagues for the Cincinnati Reds and spent 37 years as a journalist. He was managing editor of the La Grande Evening Observer from 1958 to 1967 and retired in 1983 after 16 years as sports editor of the Daily Astorian. Survivors include his children, Robert G. Pannell Jr. of Bowie, Md., Joseph Pannell of Millersville, Pa., David Pannell of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Pannell of Portland, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Whitt, Sr., 78, of Akron, passed away April 27, 2004. Roy was employed by Consolidated Freightway for 33 years and was a member of the Teamsters Local 24. Roy will always be remembered for taking great pride in his work and for his independence. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and was very involved in the lives of his family members. His easygoing personality will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and daughter, Robin Flaker. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; sons, Sandy (Elizabeth), David (Hester), and Roy Jr.; daughter, Malinda Waller; brother, Tom; sister, Edith Hypes; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Susie. Friends and family may call tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at NEWCOMER-FARLEY FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
