Burnett, age 101, of Squire, W.Va., died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at her home. She was born Feb. 28, 1911 at Glen Alum, W.Va. and was the oldest daughter of the late Elmer and Hester Ann Griffith. Mrs. Burnett was a very independent lady who enjoyed cooking and making friends; she never met a stranger. She was known for her famous homemade rolls and meatloaf. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her family was her life, she loved them all, and they loved her in return. She will be missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde H. Burnett Sr., whom she married on June 23, 1928; two sons, Clyde Burnett Jr. and Douglas Burnett; four brothers, Walter, Homer, Emory, and Edgar Griffith; two sisters, Mary Crabtree, and Pauline Odum. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Miley and husband, Harold of Virginia Beach, Va., Kathleen Beattie of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Sandra Whitt and husband, Clarence of Centreville, Va.; one son, Jack Burnett and wife, Lucy of Tazewell, Va.; two sisters, Anna Whited of Hanover, W.Va., and Virginia Novak and husband, Jerry of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Barbara Taylor. Funeral services for Mrs. Ollie B. Burnett will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Clemmie Jones and the Rev. Born January 17, 1920, in Cedar Bluff, Virginia, he was married for 57 years to his beloved wife Rosa Spencer Whittaker who predeceased him in 2003. He was the son of the late William R. Whittaker and Susie Lee Whittaker both of Tazewell County, Virginia. Mr. Whittaker, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church in Danville for 51 years. While his involvement in Grace Design was reduced because of illness over the past few years, he formerly was an active member of the church choir, Sunday school and numerous church committees. He and his wife loved the church and their church family. Mr. Whittaker graduated from Bluefield West Virginia Business College with the equivalent of an associate degree in business. After working as a bookkeeper for two years he entered the United States Navy. A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the South Pacific theater of operations. A retiree for the past 29 years, he was employed, during most of his working life, in sales as a regional salesman for Andrew Jergens, Inc., a health and beauty aids company headquartered in Cincinnati, OH. As a regional salesman, he covered south-central Virginia and north-central North Carolina. While employed with Andrew Jergens, Mr. Whittaker was frequently recognized by the company for his exceptional sales results, his work ethic and his customer service initiatives. After retiring from Jergens, he managed several stations for the A. T. Williams Oil Company of Winston Salem. He is survived by two daughters, Joyce W. Sparks of Danville and Janet W. Swann of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a son, William Donald Whittaker of Rockville, Maryland; five grandchildren, Kerry L. Sparks of Eagle River, Alaska, Scott A. Swann of Boulder, Colorado, Joshua P. Whittaker of Danville, Jeremy R. Swann of Virginia Beach, and Ann W. Harris of Durham, North Carolina; six great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, and one brother, Charlie Whittaker of Windsor, Connecticut. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was predeceased by two sisters and one brother. Funeral services for Mr. Whittaker will be held at Grace Design United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Dr. James Siddons, officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. A lifelong resident of the Big Moccasin Valley area of Russell County, VA, he was born on September 10, 1929 to the late Con and Arah Glenn McNew. He was a member and also a trustee of Bethany United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Stuart Masonic Lodge #224. Paul began work at AFG Industries in Kingsport, TN in 1956 and retired in 1991. He enjoyed working on his farm, raising a garden, and woodworking after retiring. Paul McNew was a reserved, quiet man devoted to his family and his church. Pauls quiet dignity inspired admiration for a man who would always do the right thing. May all who knew and loved Paul continue to be inspired by a life well lived. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Neal McNew and Wood McNew. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Linda Hilton McNew, Lebanon, VA, daughter, Nikki Phillips and husband David, Lebanon, VA, and grandson, Lance Phillips and wife Jessica, and precious great-granddaughter Olivia, Abingdon, VA. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Louise McNew and Audrey McNew, Kingsport, TN, Patsy Craft, Gate City, VA, and several nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Dwight McNew, Keith McNew, Ken McNew, Ryland Craft, Rick Sumner, Andrew Hartsock, Brian Hartsock, and Aaron Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers include men of Bethany United Methodist Church and Glen Litton, Floyd Johnson, Jeff McAmis, and Bobby Johnson. He was born December 4, 1922, to William Broadus Johnson and Mary Emma Browning Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ida Cornelia Melton Johnson; and his sister, Mary Eloise Johnson Ryalls. He is also survived by four children, Carole Wood and her husband, Bernie, Glenn Johnson and his wife, Mary Ann, Lois Woodson and her husband, Buddy, and Calvin Johnson and his wife, Debbie; 10 grandchildren, Amy Johnson, Troy Johnson and his wife, Jes, David Rhoades and his wife, Stephanie, Amanda Collins, April Woodson, Dale Woodson, Amber Johnson, Crystal Williams and her husband, Dave, Lauren Black and Taylor Black.; and seven great -grandchildren. He served as a surgical technician with the United States Army 819th Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. He was active in the V.F.W. Post #8169 in Scottsville, the Fluvanna Ruritan Club and was a Deacon and life-long member of Fluvanna Baptist Church. Family night will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville. Ralph was a retired employee of Pennzoil Oil Company. He was a member of American Legion Post 81 in Pine Grove, V.F.W. Post 6327 in Sistersville, D.A.V. and the Alvy Community Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Dale Church of Christ in Dale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Ralph is survived by his wife, Betty Ball Hayes; two sons, Rodney L. Hayes and wife, Susan, of Wick and Doug Hayes of New Martinsville; one daughter, Peggy Glover of Middlebourne; two brothers, Junior Hayes of Reader and Thomas Hayes of Freemont, Ohio; two sisters, Margie Bedgood of Oklahoma and Helen Brenneman of Jacksonburg; five grandsons, three granddaughters and 10 great-grandchildren.
