    Notes
    • Devil Anse Hatfield was involved in one of the famous feuds in American history with the McCoys. It almost caused a civil war between West Virginia and Kentucky. There is a huge amount of information, but a fairly accurate and condensed version is available on Wikipedia.

Altina Waller, a WV historian, presented an excellent analysis of the feud for the film "West Virgina." This is a long read, but worthwhile because you learn how the personalities of the two men and the culture, economics, and politics combined to make the events unfold. She also describes how the media changed the perception of Appalachia from independent farmers with family being the primary focus to violent drunkards who fought over nothing.

From the same film, here is information from Margaret Hatfield.
