Magna Charta Sureties 1215, Frederick Lewis Weis, additions by Walter Lee Sheppard Jr, 5th Edition, 1999Page: 136-2
The site of Dudley Castle lay abandoned after it was destroyed by Henry II when Gervase de Paynel supported the uprising of Prince Henry. In the mid-thirteenth century Roger Somery began to rebuild. He died in 1272 before the works were anything like complete, and they were carried on by his son, John, said to have been one of the most hated feudal lords in the west Midlands.
