OBITUARY
Garnet E. Thompson, age 78, of Valley Dale Dr. Mount Vernon, died unexpectedly at his home, March 30, 2002. He was born april 23, 1923, in South Clinchfield, Virginia, the son of the late Vernie and Bessie (Lockhart) Thompson and had been a Mount Vernon resident for most of his life.
He was an employee of the Continental Can Corp. for over 30 years and retired there as pressroom supervisor. Mr. Thompson was a WWII veteran. He served with the United States Army's Third Army and saw nearly constant combat for three and a half years with infantry reconnaissance and special operations units. He served in North Africa prior to the Normandy Invasion and was involved in combat action at the Kassarine Pass. Later, he served under General Patton and was part of the amphibious invasions of Sicily at Anzio and the Italian campaign. His unit was then sent to Europe and he saw combat there including the battle of the Bulge. Mr. Thompson was awarded the Purple Heart. He is a life member of the AMVETS and a member of the Moose Lodge both in Mount Vernon. And has been honored in the Veterans Walk on the public square in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his spouse Felicia (Blaha) de Fraza; a daughter Felicitas (Edward) Hoyle of Howard; six sons Victor Thompson, Stephen Thompson, David (Kim) Thompson, Mark (Chelsa) Thompson, Troy (Jackie) Thompson and Chris (Janie) Thompson; a step-daughter Penny Rayburn and a step-son Benjamin Rayburn all of Mount Vernon; 14 granddaughters, 15 grandsons, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 brothers George (Irene) Thompson of Howard and Harold (Sandy) Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia (Bocker) Thompson, a son Terry Todd Thompson, 2 infant grandsons and 2 brothers Earl and Carl.
Friends may call tuesday from 5 pm until 8 pm at the Flowers-Snyder funeral home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 am at the funeral home and burial with military honors observed by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in the Mount Mernon Memorial Gardens.
