OBITUARY
The Daily Jeffersonian; Cambridge OH; 20 May 2007
MT. VERNON Fred Thompson, 97, of Galion, passed away peacefully Thursday (May 17, 2007) at The Beckett House in New Concord. He was born July 13, 1909, in Russell County, Va., son of the late Abraham and Minnie (Ray) Thompson who passed away when Fred was 6 months old. He was raised by his loving grandparents, Edward and Martha (Dye) Thompson, whom he cherished.
He had a wonderful life growing up in the mountains of southwest Virginia. He chose not to be a coal miner as many of his family were, but took a correspondence course in electricity and applied that knowledge during his lifetime. He also became an excellent welder and served his country during World War II on the homefront by building LSD Landing Craft, truck bodies and other military equipment. Mr. Thompson was a 30 year employee of Galion Peabody (Hercules), retiring in 1972. He was the oldest member of the Peabody Retirees Association.
Fred almost always had a pet dog whom he trained for hunting and other tricks. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who relished good cooked wild game. He enjoyed garening, sharing his produce with neighbors and family. He was a beekeeper and winemaker. His travels to visit relatives and friends were many and his safe driving of 70-plus years brought only one traffic stop and no tickets. He was a wise investor and a miserly spender. When asked about his longevity, he always replied, "I don't smoke, drink, over-eat or chase wild women."
He had a deep unspoken faith and maintained his "guardian angel" watched over him. He attended the Galion Gospel Baptist Church and preferred country/gospel music. Often he played the harmonica to some of his favorite songs, "Life is Like a Mountain Railway," "Lonesome Valley" and "On Top of Old Smokey." He married his childhood sweetheart N, Mae Lockhart on Dec. 24, 1929. They proudly raised three children, Dr. C.W. (Bill) Thompson (Marie) of Galion, Betty J. Richards (Stan) of New Concord, L.T. (Tom) Thompson (Judy) of Centerburg and lost an infant son James E. Thompson in 1933.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Clyde, Ellis, Cecil, Claude and Cleve, and three sisters Bonnie, Leora and Dana. One remaining sister Goldie Ray lives in Raven, Va.
Fred was blessed with nine grandchildren, Terry Sexton (Denny), Patrick Thompson, Kimberly Esteran (Eric), Eric Richards, Mark Richards (Julie), Matthew Thompson (Cyndi), Krista Keeling (Don), Andy Thompson, Bethany Lee (Rich), 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great granchildren.
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. today (Sunday) followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. at Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Bruce Hartley will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Crawford Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 727, Bucyrus, OH 44820 or the Knox County Humane Society, 390 Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
